The understanding of folks who shared feelings during the loss of a loved one meant an awful lot to me and my family. Special thanks to Pastor Jill, the ladies that prepared lunch, the pall bearers and those who assisted with the funeral service, all those who sent cards and to all those who just expressed their sympathy in many ways, again thank you! Fred Pelkemeyer & Family Dear Zion Lutheran Church Congregation: Thank you so much for the donation of the children s collection offering to the Brenham Project Graduation event. It helped provide the seniors a safe, fun event to celebrate their graduation. Your generosity is certainly appreciated and thank you again. Many Blessings, 2017 Seniors of Bernham High School Pastor Katrina Walther was raised in the Washington and Austin County area. She earned her undergraduate degrees in English and Biology from Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. It was at TLU that she met Carl Walther they were married just two months before Katrina graduated from university. Katrina worked as a teacher at a small private school for a time after graduation, and it was there that she began to discern a call to ministry. Carl and Katrina relocated to the Austin area, where Katrina attended the Lutheran Seminary Program of the Southwest. She received her Masters of Divinity and was ordained in Her first call as an ordained minister was to Our Saviour s Lutheran Church of Sunnyside, Washington. After seven years in Washington state, Katrina and Carl and their daughters, Laura and Heather, are looking forward to returning to Texas, and particularly to the Brenham area.
3 Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing. But we appeal to you, brothers and sisters, to respect those who labor among you, and have charge of you in the Lord and admonish you; esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. And we urge you, beloved to admonish the idlers, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with all of them. See that none of you repays evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to all. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:11-18 As I reflect on my time spent with you here at Zion, I can t help but to see the wonderful ways in which you have supported and encouraged me along the way. Your encouraging words and support have been what this weary soul has needed and I am so thankful for you. Support and encouragement are gifts of the Spirit and are important tools in building the body of Christ up. Paul was writing this letter to the young church in Thessalonica, a church that was facing many challenges in a culture that worshipped many Gods. It wasn t an easy time for Christianity and so Paul was giving them all that he had while pointing to God s amazing love. When you think of it, today has its challenges for the church as well. People are being pulled in every direction, while the church is often placed on the back burner for many. As I listen to the chaotic schedules of people, I can t help but feel their tiredness of trying to make things fit in their jammed packed schedules. Parents are stretched to the limits in trying to get their kids to school, practices, games and whatever else that comes up. It is a trying time! For this reason, I am so thankful for the thriving ministry that happens here at Zion. You make church and God a priority. You are a congregation that shows up and volunteers. You have youth who are willing to take time out of their summer schedules to serve and learn, and then to return and lead Sunday worship and share their experiences. You have people who are actively involved in planning and leading worship. There are people who are doing things behind the scenes that enhance our ministry. I am still amazed by the fact that you don t have to pay for lawn service. It is incredible to see the many hands that are working together here at Zion. As Paul says, it is God s will for us to respond with thanksgiving and rejoicing, for many marvelous and wonderful things are being done here. So I would like to encourage you to do exactly that! When you see someone sharing their gifts for the ministry of Christ, say thank you! Continue to encourage and support one another in Christ because God is indeed here and working through you, the good people of Zion. In God s peace and love, Pastor Jill

7 To the Members of Zion Lutheran Church, This completion report is for the project Tahtay Tinka, that Zion Lutheran Church in Brenham, Texas sponsored through Water to Thrive. Tahtay Tinka is included in the group of 40 W2T projects implemented by Relief Society of Tigray (REST) in 2016 in the district northern district of Tigray in Ethiopia. The program for these 40 projects was launched in early 2016 and was completed in the 2nd quarter of Recent drought conditions in northern Ethiopia caused substantial implementation challenges for our partner, REST, with numerous projects requiring to be relocated to more sustainable aquifer supplies. These challenges delayed completion of some of the projects. As the projects have been completed and reporting is complete we are now pleased to be able to share with you some photos and details from the site. Also attached is a lower resolution file showing the signage for the project site. Site Name Lat. Long. Beneficiaries* Tahtay Tinka Total Beneficiaries 300 *This is the number of beneficiaries within 1 kilometer of the project. Because of the scarcity of water, often 2-3X that number may benefit from the project. Each day, these new projects provide clean, safe water to hundreds of people. The communities participated fully in the construction and implementation of these wells and the villages have now taken full ownership of the projects. Water committees, selected by the communities themselves, maintain the water points and ensure that they are being properly used. The committees, along with the communities they serve, work hard to make sure that the wells are sustainable and will be able to provide clean water for many years. Thanks to your generosity, these communities no longer have to face the fear of illness and death from dirty water. Women will be able to spend hundreds of additional hours a year looking after their families instead of collecting water. Children will not have to miss class to help gather water. Thanks to you and your efforts, these wells will be lasting sources of health, productivity and prosperity. The people of Tigray and the team here at Water to Thrive thank you for making this blessing of water possible. We are grateful to have you as a partner in our mission to bring more clean water to those in need. If you have any questions concerning the completion, be sure to reach out to me. Regards, Dick Moeller Water to Thrive

9 This week we would like to recognize our weekly money counters: it s harder and harder these days to get the number of volunteers we need for so many projects. But our loyal bean counters have made time in their busy schedules to step up each week to insure our church finances are properly counted and deposited to the bank. Our world is a better place because there is always someone out there willing to help others. Questions: 1. Who lied to God when he was asked where his brother was? 2. Which Old Testament character showed his faith by being willing to offer his son on an altar to God? 3. What significant event is recorded in Genesis chapters 1 and 2? 4. What was inscribed above Jesus cross? 5. Whose mother placed him in an ark of bulrushes? 1. Cain (Gen 4:9) 2. Abraham (Jam 2:21-22) 3. Creation (Gen 1-2) 4. King of the Jews/This is Jesus King of the Jews (Mark 15:26; Matt27:27) 5. Moses (Exo 2:3)
