4 Articles for the April 2019 newsletter must be received by March 20 th, Thank you. Pastor s Message: Lent: Centering Ourselves in Christ Jesus This month, we enter the 40 day season of Lent. The observance of Lent dates to the early days of the church. For the earliest Christians, it became customary that before the celebration of the Resurrection of Our Lord, there should be a time of spiritual preparation for individuals and the community. Lent has long been a time when new believers traditionally prepared for baptism on Easter morning or at an Easter Vigil. Existing believers often choose to renew their faith through fasting, prayer, self-denial, and deep reflection on the Word of God and on our constant need for God and God s forgiveness through Christ Jesus. This year, I invite you to join us for our Lenten series, God at the Center. Using a labyrinth, an ancient tool for prayer and meditation, we will reflect on how God is the author and center of every aspect of our existence. Despite the fact that the words labyrinth and maze are often used interchangeably, there is a key difference between them. A maze is designed to confuse you and make you lose your way; it is a puzzle to be solved. A labyrinth, on the other hand, does not contain deliberate wrong turns; it is designed so that, if you simply stay on the path, you will be led to the center and then sent back out again. For me, that is the appeal during the holy season of Lent: it symbolically leads or draws us deeper into our relationship with God, then sends us back out into the world, full of His grace. There are as many ways to use a labyrinth as there are to pray. Together, we will explore one simple method of scriptural reflection and self-examination. Brothers and sisters in Christ, like the path of a labyrinth, Lent is a journey. It is a time when we acknowledge that God is the beginning and the end, God is the God, and we are not. It is a time to reflect and repent on the ways in which we put ourselves before God, the ways we seek our own will, not His, the ways we stray from the Kingdom, from the path Jesus Christ himself taught us. We begin our Lenten journey by being marked with a cross of ashes, a sign of humility and repentance. The ashes carry a twofold message: without Christ, we are empty dust; with Christ, we are forgiven and saved by the grace of God! We repent and turn to Him because He is gracious and merciful and his enduring love knows no bounds! The Ash Wednesday prayer: Almighty God, you created us out of the dust of the earth. May these ashes be a sign of our mortality and penitence, reminding us that only by the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ are we given eternal life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
5 Amen. Your sister in Christ, Pastor Katrina
