Lorna Hood. AK Club leaders, Mrs Beldy Blackhall and Mrs Cath Roskell were presented with Long Service Certificates by the Moderator of the Church of Scotland, the Right Rev. Lorna Hood, at a special service held in Banff Parish Church on Sunday 10 th November, in recognition of over thirty years service to the Sunday School. The service brought together many Elders and members of other congregations within the Presbytery of Buchan in a Songs of Praise evening held as part of the Moderator s visit to Buchan. The service and presentations were followed by some refreshments in the adjoining hall when those attending got the opportunity to enjoy a cup of tea and have an informal chat with the Moderator. Mrs Blackhall and Mrs Roskell have both been loyal and dedicated leaders in our Sunday School over many, many years and it was fitting that they received their presentations from the Moderator on what was a very enjoyable and special evening.

3 Retirement beckons At the beginning of February I informed the Kirk Session and congregation of my decision to retire as your parish minister this summer following my 65 th Birthday. As many of you know I have various health problems and without good health the practice of parish ministry becomes very difficult for both minister and congregation. Mari and I believe that the time is now right for us to step down and let someone else take up the reins. My birthday falls on 28 th May and the plan is that my final Sunday services in the Old Parish will be the Communion services on 1 st June and the Youth Church prize-giving service on 8 th June. We came here in November 2007 and the years seem to have flown by. We have many happy memories and it has been, and still is, a pleasure and privilege to be your minister. All ministries, whether long or short, are by their nature only temporary. Ministers and congregations come together for a while on their Christian journeys. A hymn verse captures this sharing of the time we spend together: We are pilgrims on a journey, and companions on the road. We are here to help each other, walk the mile and share the load Over the years Mari and I have experienced tremendous help, support and friendship from the Old Parish and we hope that we have also been able to help and encourage others as we have journeyed together. We will be retiring to Oban and hope to move there in July. Presbytery has been informed of my decision and will hopefully speak soon with the Kirk Session about vacancy procedures. The Kirk Session will keep you informed as to what happens next as you embark on your search for a new minister. Over the next 4 months we will have the chance to say our personal goodbyes to some of you, but for now Mari and I want to acknowledge and thank the many of you who have given us such warm support and friendship during our time in the Broch. Yours in Christ Peter Park Parish Minister If you or anyone you know would like the Minister to visit them in Hospital please let the Minister know. office: Manse : There is an audio loop system for the hard of hearing. 7 Replacement plaque at the Rev D R Clyne Memorial Window About 3 month ago. Agnes and I were discussing possible projects that had been brought to our attention by church members. It just happened that on that particular morning Sandy Ewing and Evelyn Masson were serving in the coffee lounge and we had mentioned a few ideas to them. Low and behold, later on that day, Sandy came to my home with the most beautiful piece of marble I have ever seen. I took it to Church to show the minister and Ronnie, we all agreed that it was just right for what we wanted. The Plaque that is in church, in dedication of Rev. Douglas Clyne, sadly is looking worse for the wear. Sandy took the marble to an engraver in Peterhead and had it engraved with exact wording that was on the original brass plate. After the engraving was done Sandy picked it up from Peterhead and I contacted Sheila Watt and Evelyn. Sheila had very kindly offered to pay for the engraving of the plaque from the Anchor Boys, through her sales of books in the coffee lounge. Thank you very much to Sheila, staff and Anchor Boys. As most of us know Evelyn makes the most wonderful shortbread. All the money collected goes to good causes. Evelyn has paid for the joiner, Peter Bruce, to erect the plaque in church. Evelyn you do a fantastic job for lots and lots of causes in a very quiet manner. A huge thank you. You are a star. I cannot thank Sandy enough for getting the ball rolling by coming up that day and donating the lovely marble. Sandy you are a very kindly, gentle man. Thanks a million. It never ceases to amaze me the generosity and goodness of the Auld Kirk Folk. We are truly blessed in our congregation. So thank you all once again a job very well done. The plaque is looking very nice in church. God Bless You All. Beldy Blackhall xx

8 AULD KIRK NURSERY NEWS Its been a busy time at nursery past few months. We had an unannounced inspection from SCSWIS which we are happy to say we have recently received a glowing report. Here is a link if you`d like to view report. berengcareservices/html/reports/getpdfblob.php?id= We had a lovely Christmas party and a trip to boomerangs before Christmas. Since returning for the new year we have been very busy, celebrating Burns, Chinese new year. A visit from PC Philip Duncan learning about safety and stranger danger. We have been learning about healthy living through eating healthy snack, dance, exercise. Learning to navigate and control remote cars. Learning about caring for animals and fish with a visit from Emmas Guinea pigs, caring for our goldfish. Using our senses - blindfold/feely bag, trying on glasses, feeling different textures, learning how people feel who cant see/hear and learning basic sign language. Catchlites photopraphy will be in nursery on Wednesday, 26 th February. If you know of anyone that would like photos taken there is no charge for sitting. You pay for photos you like. Packages start from 20. We will be wearing bandanas on Friday 7 th March in support of the Brain Tumour Charity. A trip to boomerangs is planned for easter break and a buttery/pancake morning planned for Saturday, 10 th May. We would like to thank the ladies of the Guild who bought lucky squares in aid of Islas dream (Jan won Mickey and Minnie) and also thank them for paying for carpet on the stage which we have paid for. Every year we give a donation to the church for their kindness and support they give to the nursery. Thanks from Andrea, Eileen and Emma and committee. Photo of the children sitting on the new carpeted stage and no splinters in their bottoms NEW STAGE IN PENNY SCHOOLIE One day I was through in the Penny Schoolie measuring the stage to get a step made for getting on and off the stage. Later Eileen-Jane and Andrea told me to order a new stage and the Nursery would pay for it. I asked Peter Angus, who is Alison from the coffee lounge s husband, for a quote. Within two weeks Peter had installed the stage plus a new lectern that the Nursery also gave us. A huge thank you to the nursery for this very big donation. It will make a huge difference to all the different groups who use the hall. The nursery goes quietly on every day during school term time just getting on with their work. It has been an important part of our centre for many years. Often bringing in new customers for the coffee lounge that would never have been in if not for dropping off their children. Ladies well done for all the hard work you do in the background, always supporting any events going on in the centre in aid of the church. We never really say it, but thank you all from everyone in church for all your hard work. Thank you to Peter for building the stage and lectern, Jimmy Muirhead for varnishing them both and Guild for the carpet. Just a lovely finishing touch. Another job very well done. 9 Bon-Accord Silver Band The photo was taken on 22nd September 2013 at the night concert in the Church Centre. Saturday 26 th October 2013 Every Christmas the Bon-Accord Silver Band holds a concert in the Duthie Park indoor gardens. Each year Jim and Lorraine Biccochi, my hubby Billy and I attend this event. There is always a raffle and I always say to Billy I could make more money for the band if I did that!! Last year when speaking to Dr David Cooper and his wife Karen I told them of my thoughts and he mentioned they were hoping to find other premises in Aberdeen for band practice. This year they were lucky enough to find somewhere and Dr David and Karen contacted me and asked if the offer to help still stood. I first spoke with our minister and Peter thought it was a good idea as the band had been coming to the Auld Kirk for 38 years. Peter told the congregation about our idea and after I asked a few people others started to offer their help. Some from other churches who had connections with the band over the years also offered help. I thought this was just magic, isn t that what it is all about to help each other. We put adverts on Waves Radio and local newspapers, Christine made up poster, thank you Christine, these were distributed to various places. Have to say huge thank you to my granddaughter Levi who set out the dishes and cutlery for me. Levi is only five so well done Levi. On the day the helpers all started to arrive. A list was made up of where everyone was going and what they were doing and we waited. It was slow to start but soon picked up, we were chuffed to see lots of people coming through the doors. I have to say everyone was very generous as usual. All the stalls were happy with their mornings work. I will not mention everyone by name but a huge thank you to each and every one of the helpers for a fantastic job, very well done. As usual you all gave 100% for the Band. A very kind lady paid for the rolls so thank you very much to her. This meant no outlay everything was donated. All the money taken in was profit. Thank You. Louise Ritchie, Margaret Noble, Jan Noble and I counted the money. The fantastic sum of was raised. The money was sent via Eileen Scott to the band on the Monday after the sale. Eileen said they were fair chuffed with the amount. Once again a huge thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who always give of their time and talents to help. Without you guy s help I would never get thing off the ground. You are all stars. God Bless Beldy Blackhall xx

10 CHURCH CHRISTMAS BAZAAR 2013 All too soon it was time to start thinking about our annual main fundraiser for our church funds. Christine and I got together put the wheels in motion. We know that everyone is happy to help when approached. We are always on the lookout for some new ideas and help. Please if you would like to help in any way just let us know, we would be most grateful. Once again a big thank you to Company Section of our Boys Brigade for setting up the hall for us on Friday night. It takes you boys a minute when it would take us hours. Oh to be young again!! Saturday morning Guild ladies started arriving with their pots of soups and delicious puddings. The soup and sweet always goes down a treat but it only works with all the hard working ladies pulling together. Give yourselves a pat on the back as you all work really hard to make money for our church. Thank you one and all. While soup and sweets are being served the big hall is usually packed out with stalls and a special visitor Santa. Thank you to Ronnie Birnie leaders and covenanters for arranging the dull store cupboard into a magical kingdom for Santa. This year we decided to change the route to Santa as previous years many were standing outside queuing in the cold and sometimes rain. This year everyone was cosy and dry inside also the main door was clear for others getting out and in. Poor Santa was puffed out as he was really busy but every child received a parcel down his magic chimney. It s lovely to see their faces when leaving the grotto with their parcels. The stalls in the hall did really well with lovely things to buy. A big thank you to each and every one of the helpers who contributed towards success of the day. As usual one man goes about very quietly making sure everyone has enough change and makes sure all the money is collected and counted that is our own Mr Gordon Young. Gordon does lots of work quietly in the background and is always overlooked so this year Gordon thanks you very much for all you do. Usually his daughter Helen helps with the counting and wife Freda gets roped in after she finishes her shift slaving over a hot stove at the soup and sweet. Thank you all. The bazaar starts at 12noon with soup and sweet from 12-2 after that is tea/coffee, pancake and fine piece in the coffee lounge the stall are usually sold out by about 2.30 then the packing up starts for another year. I am always scared I miss someone out so this year thank year to everyone who did whether coming along, donating or helping. This year we raised over 3,000 a fantastic amount. Our minister was fair chuffed with the amount. It just goes to show what can be done when everyone pulls together. God bless you all. Saltire Volunteering Awards Rhona Davidson, a development officer with the Volunteer Centre based at the college in Fraserburgh, visited the Covenanters at the end of October to give a presentation on the Saltire Award Scheme. Rhona explained that the Saltire Awards was a new Scottish awards scheme designed to formally recognise the commitment and contribution of youth volunteering to voluntary organisations and to encourage and reward youth volunteering. Rhona also explained that group members volunteering for church duties or to help in church activities can count towards the attainment of a Saltire Award certificate and Young Scot reward points. The evening was most enjoyable and interesting and resulted in a number of members signing up for the scheme. Thank you Rhona. 14 Pine Tree Crosses Last April on a Sunday, we took one of our "nowhere" drives in Florida. My husband was quietly driving a back road and I was occupied in the front passenger seat watching the scenery. I noticed out of the corner of my eye that my husband was straining to look out my window. This startled me, since his eyes should be on the road in front of him. I asked him what he was looking at out the windows, and he quietly replied, "Nothing." His eyes went back to the road in front of him. After a few minutes, I looked over at my husband and noticed a tear running down his cheek. I asked him what was wrong. This time he told me, "I was just thinking about my dad and a story he had once told me." Of course, because it had to do with his father, I wanted to know the story, so I asked him to share it with me. He said, "When I was about eight years old, dad and I were out fishing and that's when he told me that the Pine trees know when it is Easter." I had no idea what he meant by that, so I pressed him for more information. He continued on... "The Pine trees start their new growth in the weeks before Easter... If you look at the tops of the Pine trees two weeks before, you will see the yellow shoots. As the days get closer to Easter Sunday, the tallest shoot will branch off and form a cross. By the time Easter Sunday comes around, you will see that most of the Pine trees will have small yellow crosses on all of the tallest shoots." I turned to look out the window and I couldn't believe my eyes. It was a week before Easter, and you could see all of the trees with the tall yellow shoots stretching to Heaven. The tallest ones shone in the sunlight like rows of tiny golden crosses. Wishing you God's blessings today and always! Sent with love and best wishes for a blessed Easter from a friend of Dorothy Mair in Florida

15 Guild Christmas Party 2013 Once again it was time for our annual Christmas Party. It seems to come round quicker each year. This year we went to Heathhill. After Lorna did all the arrangements it was all systems go and forty eight ladies made their way out to Memsie on the 11 th December. After Grace a truly excellent meal was served. The girls serving were really nice and the meal was piping hot and plenty of it. To all the staff a huge thanks you. Next we played a game and the laughter could be heard down the corridor. Then we had a special visitor, SANTA. It was lovely to see him. All the ladies receive a parcel from Santa, but this year as the tables were in long rows Santa had to deliver the parcels. It did give his knees a rest from everyone sitting on them and giving him a bosie.. Next we sang some Christmas songs which really got us in the Christmas spirit. All too soon it was time for the vote of thanks. Firstly to Lorna for organising our party venue, Alison and Lynne for making up Santa s parcels and organising the game, and Phyllis for the music for the singing. The Heathhill staff for the beautiful meal, and all the ladies for coming. Without all these people there would be no party. Roll on next year. A few of our ladies were ill and could not attend, I hope you all are feeling better, we missed you all. God Bless you all. Beldy Blackhall

20 Burns Supper Wednesday 22 nd January 2014 When we had our get-together in the coffee lounge last year, Sheila and Joe Watt s granddaughter sang and played the guitar. When we were deciding on whom to ask to entertain at the Burns Supper I suggested that we could ask Isla McCall, Lisa West and Nicola Brown. All very talented young people from our own church. First thank you to George McCann and John Mitchell for setting out the tables, chairs and stage. A very important job lads, thanks a bunch to you both. Have to say a huge thank you to Louise Ritchie and Margaret Noble for preparing the mince, haggis and making the trifles. Very well done ladies. The guild committee for laying the tables in the afternoon and for cooking the neeps and tatties. Thank you ladies. Thanks to Mrs Robertson once again donating the neeps and tatties. Brilliant. Freda Young and Margaret Paton for cutting the currant loaves and Helen Birnie for making up the posters. Thank you. All in all a great bunch of very hard working ladies, thank you one and all we would not manage to have any functions without the hard work of all you ladies. We had a very good turnout on the night. Denise Buchan piped in the haggis being carried by Louise Ritchie. Thank you both. Our minister Rev. Peter Park did a very good address to the haggis. Thank you so much Peter. I am very sorry that on the night I forgot to thank you in the vote of thanks. Our beautiful meal was then served very quickly and professionally. We decided to draw the raffle after the meal and this gave the ladies time to clear the dishes. Thanks to Francis Ewan and all committee ladies for washing the dishes and tidying up so very well. Thanks to everyone for bringing, buying and selling raffles. Sandy Noble started with the immortal memory to Burns. Sandy you were excellent. You said that it was one of your bucket list items. Well that is another one ticked off for you. You are a star. Then it was over to husband and wife John and Chris Ritchie. John recited some very good poetry. I am sure he mentioned that the boys would not manage without us lassies. I think that s how it went. Chris then did the reply on behalf of the lassies. John and Chris, we really enjoyed the banter between the two of you and glad you both took everything in good fun. I didn t want you both falling out. Thank you both so much. On now to the entertainment. First up was Isla singing and playing guitar. Next was Lisa singing, playing flute and dancing. Then Isla and Brenna played guitars and sang. After a quick change of costume Lisa sang and danced again. Isla did a very good poem about the Wattry and then played what seemed a very complicated piece on the piano. It was simply beautiful. Lisa sang a very moving hymn and there were a few tissues out and the end of her recital. So they went on and off stage each doing more songs and dance. Can I just say these girls are out of this world with talent. Isla tought herself to play the guitar, and her piano piece brought lots of us to tears as well. A very talented young lady. Isla you are a real credit to your family. Lisa your dancing is just brilliant and the changes of costumes you make and not a hair out of place. Plus singing and playing the flute. You too are a credit to your family. Brenna Morrison came along as Nicola couldn t make it. Thank you Brenna we really appreciated your guitar playing and singing. Girls a million thanks to you all, who need x-factor when we have such talent in our own church. Comment heard from people since, was best Burns Supper and entertainment for years. L-R: Isla McCall,Brenna Morrison and Lisa West. L-R: Rev Peter Park Denise Buchan, Chris Ritchie, John Ritchie and Sandy Noble All in all a very good evening was had by all. Only disappointment was the heating packing up again and everyone was really feeling the cold. I am so sorry about that. After thanking everyone for coming to celebrate the life of Robbie Burns with us, I wished everyone a safe journey home. Thank you to all the wonderful people who stayed behind and helped us clear the hall of tables and chairs. It was very good of everyone. God Bless you all. Hope to see you all next year. Beldy Blackhall xx

21 Every year lots of our Ladies and Gents from the Old Parish Church go to the South Church Christmas Concert, organised by their choir and friends. Our own choir master, Mr James Buchan, decided that for the first time ever, our choir could have a concert. It was to be called A Celebration of Christmas. The choir started working on the songs months before. After many hours of very hard work and practice all was ready for the concert on Sunday 8 th December 2013 at 6pm. The Church was pretty full with people from many different Churches in the area. It was lovely to see that The Choir Leader James Buchan we all support each other s events as it should be. The setting was great and a lot of people were saying it was lovely to actually see our choir sing, as they are always at the back of the church when singing at a service. From start to finish we were spellbound with such beautiful songs. The choir also did a selection of some very good Bible readings which were read and delivered very well. When our session clerk, Mr Ronnie Birnie, went to do the blessing he said he could not believe how quickly the time went past. It is a family affair in our choir as we have Ronnie Birnie with wife Helen plus Helen s mum Freda Young. Then husband and wife Yvonne and Robert Ferguson and choir master James Buchan and wife Lorraine. They all get on as one big happy family and it showed in the concert that they were all really enjoying their singing. So to each and every one of our wonderful choir a huge thank you to one and all. You do not realize how good you really are, but after the standing ovation from the audience at the end it is maybe sinking in now. The choir decided that people could give a donation when leaving if they wished to do so. I must say everyone was very generous as 5oo was raised. The choir decided that it would go to Kash 4 the Kirk and on behalf of Kash 4 the Kirk can I just say a huge thank you to all our wonderful choir for such a large amount, it will be put to very good use. Thank you. Andrew West taped the concert and Heather Ritchie copied the discs. The DVDs are on sale now for the cost of 5 from the office or any Kash 4 the Kirk committee member. So to sum up, can I just say from the Kash 4 the Kirk committee and helpers a huge thank you to the choir for a magical evening of song. Fingers crossed for the next time won t be too far away. James you must have been bursting with pride at your lovely choir. Well done to you all. Thanks again. God Bless you all. 22 The Honours Board "In mid-january the 1 st Fraserburgh Boys Brigade Queen s Badge Honours Boards were fixed to the walls of the Old Parish Church Centre. Lt Michael Strachan, Officer-in-Charge of the Junior Section, first thought of the idea in February 2013 and spoke it through with Rev Park who thought it was an excellent idea. This first board would commemorate the most up-to-date recipients from 2000 onwards, the most important part of the board being the blank space for future recipients. Hopefully younger boys in the company will aspire to havetheir names on the board one day! The first board, donated by the Junior Section, was presented to the Company Section at their parents night in May As a happy co-incidence Sheila Watt, Officer-in-Charge of the Anchor Boys, was Inspecting Officer that night, and on seeing this board suggested it would be a good idea to make a second board for those who were awarded their badges pre I agreed to help with the research process of the board. Appeals were put out in the Fraserburgh Herald, the Claik, and over Facebook. Zandra s copies of old Claiks were particularly useful and old editions of the Fraserburgh Herald searched. Last but not least, I travelled to Carronvale House, Larbert, to check through the records they had on Queen s Badges. After all this, it was decided no more could be done and the second board could be produced. The second board, donated by the Anchor Boys, was presented to the Company and unveiled at the Youth Dedication Service in September Then in late December 2013, after W/O Grant Duthie threatened to show off his own DIY skills, it was decided to find a professional to finally get our boards on the wall. With that in mind Mr Billy Walker, ex-company Captain and Queen s Badge recipient of 1982, was asked if he would put up the boards. He agreed, and in mid-january 2014 the boards were finally erected in their current position. We are particularly grateful to Billy Walker for volunteering his time to the Company. It is fitting that the boards were put up by an ex-company Captain and a 1st Fraserburgh Queen's Badge recipient. As well as creating an impressive feature to the Centre entrance, it is hoped the boards may give boys added incentive to work towards their Queen s Badge. Here s looking forward to seeing more and more names added in the coming years!" 23 Angels in Fort Myers Last year while on holiday I met a lovely lady from Ohio, USA called Vee Robinson we spent most afternoons together along with another friend Mary. We kept in touch and when Vee told me she was going to spend the winter in Fort Myers I gave her Dorothy Mair and Anne McIntosh's phone number as Vee did not know anybody in Fort Myers and she would be there on her own. Vee called Dorothy and they met up with each other for dinner one night. It really thrilled me that this lady I had met on holiday had met up with Dorothy and Anne. It amazes me how often God puts people into our lives just at the right time and little did the girls know at that first meeting that they would meet up again in six days time under very difficult circumstances. Dorothy Mair and Vee Robinson Vee had gone to the cinema alone, rose from her seat at the end of the film and while leaving the cinema, fell badly on a small set of stairs. Am ambulance was called and Vee was taken to hospital where they discovered she had broken her right ankle and badly sprained the left one. Here she was completely immobile many miles from home and on her own. The hospital made arrangements for Vee to be taken back to her condo where she found herself in need of help as she was in a wheelchair completely immobile and could not fly home until two days later. Vee managed to send me a message on the internet about her accident, she was very distressed and I urged her to call Dorothy who I knew would help her if she could. Dorothy and Anne, two very special Angels came to her rescue. The girls came with food prepared for a couple of days and helped Vee as much as they were able to. Dorothy and Anne coming into Vee's life was part of God's plan, when feeling very distressed and in need of much needed help Dorothy and Anne were there for Vee. As you read this Vee is back home in Ohio and already planning to return to Fort Myers as soon as she is able. Thank you Dorothy and Anne for helping my friend Vee, you are two very special Angels. 24 ISLA S DREAM 25 TH JANUARY 2014 When Isla s mum, Jane, told me that she had to raise 65,000 for an operation and physio to help Isla walk. The N.H.S. said they would not fund this treatment. What would we do if it was our little girl!! Of course we would help. Kathleen Cruickshank of the Brownies happened to come to see me when we were setting tables for a Guild meeting on the 8 th January and asked if we could do something with them for Isla. I asked the Guild ladies that night if we would organise a buttery morning and as usual, the answer was yes. Right away we put the date in the diary for Saturday 25 th. Eileen-Jane and Andrea from the nursery said they would like to help as well. So all systems go the Guild, Brownies and Nursery pulling together. Have to say a huge thank you to the Boys Brigade leaders and boys for setting up the hall with the tables and chairs after their meeting on Friday night. Very good of you all to help. Cheers boys. It seemed a slow start on the day and I was beginning to panic a little as we had all these stalls and people to help and not many coming in. Boy did it speed up. We were really busy. It was really good of everyone to come along and support Isla s dream. A huge thank you to everyone who donated, bought and helped in any way. Without everyone helping we would not have been able to raise the fantastic amount of I L to R Jane McNab Isla mam, Beldy Blackhall, one of the organisers, Sarah Jane Derby who helps Isla mam with everything and Isla McNab do not think we have ever raised that amount with a buttery morning and certainly not with just under 3 weeks to organise it all. Once again thank you to all who came along and made it such a success. Isla s mum and dad, Jane and Robert, were just so chuffed. It just goes a wee bit to help Isla achieve her dream. Keeping our fingers crossed for you Isla as you are a wonderful cheery little girl. I have to thank our beadle Alex Urquhart for coming back to help put away the tables and chairs with us it is not very easy wheeling those chairs into the cupboard. Alex you are a treasure. Lorna is herself a Marie Curie nurse and a member of the local fundraising committee. A collection was taken and monies raised were donated to Marie Curie. On 29 January we had our Burns lunch and again we had another lovely meal prepared by Margaret and the girls. 26 TZ Mwanasha Natanael CU AK Club 7 Alpine Place, Fraserburgh AB43 9WQ Christian Greetings from the AK Club, Old Parish Church, Fraserburgh! Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away. Song of Solomon 8:7 Hello Mwanasha, The children and teachers of the AK Club (the Old Parish Church Sunday School) send you Christian greetings, in the name of Jesus Christ our Saviour and Lord. We pray that this letter finds you and your family happy and full of enthusiasm for an exciting year 2014, which lies ahead. My name is Stan. I am a retired teacher and I am very happy to be the person asked to write on behalf of all the children and teachers here, who want to learn about you, encourage you and share in your progress at school. I wish that I could write to you in Kiswahili, because we know that you are an excellent student of your own local dialect. We have just celebrated Christmas and the AK Club has had a very busy few weeks with Christmas parties and taking part in the many church services. In November there was a special service, when the children each brought a gift to church. There were so many beautifully wrapped parcels piled up near the big Christmas tree at the front of the church. These were later given to boys and girls in the local community who get very few, if any, presents at Christmas, because their families are poor. On the Sunday morning before Christmas, the AK Club were the stars in a wonderful Family Service. They sang and acted in a musical play called Countdown to Bethlehem. It told the story about the busy Christmas preparations, but made it clear that what really counts is the Christmas Story of Bethlehem, the Christ child in the manger, the worshiping shepherds and the Three Wise Men. The 3-5 year-olds sang carols and the older ones presented an amazing puppet show to pop music. At the end of the service hundreds of balloons were released from nets up at the ceiling of the church and the children had fun running about trying to catch them. We want to say thank you for writing to us last summer and will continue to pray for you to be both happy and successful in 2014.When you have the time you can let us know how you are getting on. Perhaps you will let us know how you celebrate Christmas in Tanzania. Meanwhile, you are always in our prayers and thoughts. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress. 1 Timothy 4:15 Finally, the Fraserburgh Old Parish Church has a New Year gift for you. For the past six months we have been saving up pennies (small pieces of money which are left as change when people in Britain go to the shops). We have collected a sum of money and are sending it, through Compassion, so that it can be spent on yourself, your family and your school. God bless you, your family and the teachers at your school. Praise God from whom all blessings flow ( A short hymn of Christian praise.) From the pupils and the teachers at the AK Club, Fraserburgh Old Parish Church. HI everyone! We have another letter from Mwanasha: Praise the Lord Jesus. My family and I are fine. How are you doing? I hope that you are doing well in your duties. Here is dry season. How about weather to you? Here is windy. Thank you for your prayers you do for me daily and I can see God. I ask for you to pray for my studies at the centre. At the centre we were taught about dental health and I enjoyed so much. I ask you to pray for my second term exam that I may pass well. I keep praying for your daily duties. I ask you to read from Psalm 23. Good bye. If anyone would like to reply to Mwanasha give your letter to Beldy who will pass it on to either myself or Stan Williams.

27 Our puppet making experience By Kim Donn A year ago I came across another church's version of Bethlehemiam Rhapsody on You Tube. I knew that this would be so much fun for our young ones but I also recognised that it would take a lot of time to organise so it was kept for Christmas As the October Holidays came upon us I realised that I was going to have to put this plan into action but had no idea where to begin! You Tube came to my aid once again when I googled "how to make a muppet style puppet". It's amazing what you can find on the internet, including polystyrene heads! So armed with my two video clips, one of the puppet show and one of how to make the puppets, I took the idea to the kids. They loved it! Their enthusiasm for the project was amazing. As you can see from the pictures we had to cut the heads in half and sandpaper in eye sockets. We also had to carve holes in the back of the heads where our fingers would go. Gluing the felt to the heads wasn't easy - what a mess we all got in! And don't ask me about the day we lost our special fabric glue but still had to find a way of sticking on polystyrene balls for the eyes! Yes we certainly discovered that puppet making was no easy art form. But we persevered and week by week our puppets started to take shape. This is where the children's imagination really came into its own. Designing the puppets, giving them hair styles, choosing eye colours, creating head dresses were all part of the process. Along side all this artistry we had to plot where our puppets would be during the song and practice moving them in time to the music and the words. This was EXTREMELY difficult and took more practise than I think any of us anticipated. Not only did it take time to know when to open the puppets mouths but we also had to try and make the puppets seem life like. We practised lots of ways to do this and discovered that it looked best if we kept the puppets looking all around all of the time. But this created another problem because the puppets were heavier than you might imagine so very often we had to rehearse without them when our hands got sore. Our amazing set was designed and created by Jim Henry who was great to work with. We are so lucky to have someone like Jim who is prepared to put so much effort in for our young ones. Thank you Jim. And thank you to all the leaders who got sprayed in glue, covered in polystyrene and who committed to extra time for our extra sessions. It was great fun and the congregation certainly showed their appreciation of our efforts when the big day arrived. 28 The President and Vice President of the Buchan Battalion "The President and Vice President of the Buchan Battalion (Michael Strachan and Jimmy Muirhead respectively) are currently undertaking Battalion visitations. The aim is to visit every BB section of every BB company within the Buchan Battalion to see what companies are doing on a weekly basis, find out if they have concerns, and find out if there is anything the Battalion can do to help. Having carried out a significant number of visits already, it is clear there is a great diversity of Companies within our Battalion. Some wear formal uniforms, some wear only t shirts. Some are traditional, some are modern. Some have good numbers, some are down to single figures. Regardless of those differences, Christian Faith is the common thread that runs though each company. That, and the familiar L-R ; Michael Strachan and Jimmy Muirhead dedication of the volunteer officers and helpers who do sterling work on a weekly (or more) basis in continuing the advancement of the Brigade in our North East corner of Scotland." 29 Remembrance Services Sunday 10th November 2013 The Old Parish again hosted the British Legion Service of Remembrance in the Church thereafter at the town War Memorial. Both services were conducted by Rev Peter Park and it was well attended with about 500 in the Church and during the service colours were paraded by the Legion, Royal Air Force Association, Scouts, Cubs, Lifeboat, Air Cadets and Boys Brigade from different churches The Parade then marched behind the Legion Pipe Band to the Memorial where a large crowd had already gathered. At both services the 2 minute silence was well respected and thanks are due again to the Salvation Army buglers and Pipe Major Denise Buchan for their musical input on the day. The Parade enters Church The parade approaches Beldie Blackhall & Cath Roskell received flowers from the Church for their Long Service with the Sunday School. Well done ladies Psalm 118: The Lord is my strength and my song: and has become my salvation. The sounds of joy and deliverance are in the tents of the righteous. The right hand of the Lord does mighty things; the right hand of the Lord raises up. I shall not die, but live: and proclaim the works of the Lord. The Lord has disciplined me hard: but he has not given me over to death. Open the gates of righteousness: and I will enter and give thanks to the Lord. Last Friday, I had a few spare hours before going to do reviews at an establishment in the South West of England. I took the opportunity to have a walk around a small town, visiting the parish church and walking through a park. It was a beautiful day, very unlike today. It was sunny, warm and still. The sky was blue, the daffodils were in bloom, the Flowering Cherry was beginning to blossom and the birds were singing. I enjoyed the time of quiet reflection in the old church, meditating on some scriptures and hymns from a book lying on the pew, but my spirit was indeed lifted when outside, I was confronted with the wonder of creation and the hope that spring brings us. Soon we will celebrate the Easter story and be moved by Christ s passion and death for us. However, we will also rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus, celebrating this great fact with joy, for it gives us the assurance that because he lives, we shall live also. Even this latest cold spell in our weather won t be able to hold back the inevitable Spring. Likewise, our dark times are always lightened by the living Christ who is, The Light of the world, and instructs us to be lights also Have a blessed Easter
