Food pantry Summer is a difficult time for families with children who get breakfast and lunch at school. Each and every week you are kindly a s k e d t o r e m e m b e r t h o s e l e s s fortunate than we by bringing a can or box of food to church. There are cards in the entrance to the church with lists of items the Food Pantry needs. 4 THE THIRTEEN FOLDS OF OLD GLORY! On this Fourth of July weekend, I was asked to share what I read at each funeral for a veteran that has military honors present. In a few moments we will have the military honors for our loved one who served their country so faithful and honorably. During these military services, you will notice that the honor guard will meticulously fold the American Flag 13 times. While many people think this is to represent the first 13 colonies, I ask you to consider the following: The 1 st fold of the flag is a symbol of life. The 2 nd fold is a symbol of the belief in eternal life. The 3 rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of all veterans who have given their lives for the defense of our country. The 4 th fold represents our human nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance. The 5 th fold is a tribute to our great country. The 6 th fold is for where people's hearts lie. It is with their heart that they pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all. The 7 th fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through them that our country and our flag is protected against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic. The 8 th fold is a tribute to our loved one who has entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day. The 9 th fold is a tribute to Mothers; for their sacrifice of giving their sons and daughters for the protection of our country. The 10 th fold is a tribute to Fathers, for they, too have made the same sacrifice. The 11 th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon which glorifies the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob for our Jewish brothers and sisters. The 12 th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit, for those of us who are Christian. The 13 th fold, or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding them of our nation s motto, In God We Trust. After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a triangular shaped hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for them the rights, privileges and freedoms that we enjoy today. There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have deep meaning. In the future, you will see flags folded and now you will know why. As we conclude these military services, let our prayer be that we may all be truly: ONE NATION, UNDER GOD, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. Thank you Deborah Henegan Today, I announce the resignation of our Director of Faith Formation for Grades 1-8, Ms. Deborah Henegan. After five years of dedicated service to Saint Joseph Parish Community, Deb has decided to move on from her current position from our Faith Formation Program. Deb excelled with working with children, their catechists and many families. In the past, she was instrumental in creating the Children s Mass, a coat and book drive as well as a Good Deeds Bead Program made by many students during Lent. A replacement has not been decided yet, but be assured that we will let you know as soon as this takes place. Also, please know that our Faith Formation Program here at Saint Joseph Church will continue with great enthusiasm, commitment and dedication as we are committed to forming our youth in the way of our Catholic faith, a faith that finds its source and summit in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist each and every Sunday. Please join me as I extend to Deb and her family my sincere and personal thanks for her years of dedicated service, as we promise to pray that her new job will bring her peace and joy in whatever field of work she decides to continue in the future. May the Lord continue to bless her with His grace and peace as we give thanks for her many years of service to our parish family. May she know of our gratitude and thanks.

5 High Tea > >> What is High Tea? At one time, because of its expense, drinking tea was only for the upper class. This took place between lunch and dinner and was called Afternoon Tea. However, this time schedule did not work well for the working classes because they arrived home late in the evening. Thus in the industrial areas and working classes of Northern England and Southern Scotland, evening meal evolved into what is called High Tea. This meal usually included a mug of tea, bread, vegetables and occasionally meat. Variations sometimes included pies, potatoes and crackers. Come join your parish family as we try to memorialize this time honored tradition here in Newton where all are invited to High Tea on Saturday, July 15 th at 1:00pm in the Community Center. We will serve small fancy sandwiches, coffee and tea and light deserts. There will be a $5.00 donation per person. Seniors(65 and older) are free of charge. If you plan to attend, please fill out the form to the right and return to the Parish Center (or put in the weekly collection basket), or call the office at You must sign up ahead of time to attend. Bible Study Saint Joseph Church will be hosting a weekly Bible Studies Series each Monday, beginning August 7 th at 7:00pm in the School Library. There is a $20 fee for the workbook, bookmark and time chart (the parish will pay the other half to cover these costs).
