The people that we put into office will let us down and do things that we do not agree with. They are flawed, just as we are. But our hope is not in politics, it is in the name of the Lord, Jesus Christ. Prayerfully consider your vote as you make it. Once you have left the voting booth go back into the world remembering that first and foremost you are a child of God, a follower of Christ, a citizen of the Kingdom. The Holston Youth Retreat 2016 theme: "In these waters" November 11th-13th. This weekend is for 6th-12th graders. Through this theme we will explore our baptism through our sessions. Come if you were baptized as an infant, as a youth, or even if you haven't been baptized yet. Youth will learn about baptism and of God's claim made upon our lives as we walk "in these waters" everyday as God's beloved children. 3 Good Eats, NOW! 3/4 cup crushed tortilla chips Instructions Easy Chicken Tortilla Soup Ingredients 1 carton (32 oz.) Progresso chicken broth (4 cups) 1 cup Old El Paso Thick n Chunky salsa 2 cups shredded deli rotisserie chicken 1 medium avocado, pitted, peeled and chopped 1 1/2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese (6 oz.) 2 Tablespoons fresh cilantro Lime wedges, if desired 1. In a 3-quart saucepan, heat broth, salsa and chicken to boiling over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. 2. Meanwhile, divide crushed chips among 6 serving bowls. Spoon hot soup over chips, then top with avocado, cheese and cilantro. Serve with lime wedges. Autumn is a great time of year to help your family eat and move well. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics suggests: Go for a run or enjoy a nature hike. Start a family game of football. Eat a healthy meal about three hours before a workout, and have a healthy snack about an hour before. Choose meals balanced with protein and carbohydrates, such as cereal with milk. For a donation of $25, you can sponsor a Thanksgiving feast for a family in need. Marginally Interesting Fact: There are 53 Sundays in 2017, so keep that in mind when you figure your pledge. A Night of Trunk-or-Treating fun at WRPC! The 3rd Annual WRPC Trunk-or-Treat event on Wednesday, October 26th was a big success. We guestimate at least 1,000 attended this year s event. Over 750 hot dogs were served and lots of candy and prizes were given out to our neighbors! Guess who was the hit of the evening? Of course, Rosie Porter!!! Thank you, Rachel Lawson, and all of our volunteers who made this event so much fun!

5 The Circle of the Word is collecting shoeboxes again for Operation Christmas Child. We recommend purchasing your own plastic box to fill. They are sturdier and can be re-used. Each year OCC brings shoeboxes full of gifts to children around the world, along with a pamphlet in their native language that tells the story of the birth of Christ, and how he is the Savior of the world. If you would like to fill a shoebox for a child, here are a few things to remember: Pray for the child who will receive the box. Choose boy or girl, and the age you want to focus on: 2-4, 5-9, or Get a label from the website ( promotional-resources-print-art/) or the church workroom and tape it to the top of the box with your categories marked. If desired, wrap your box (bottom and top separately). You will secure it with a rubber band. (Volunteers at Operation Christmas Child will check it for banned items and the shipping and handling donation, but never remove anything else from your child s box!) Put in small toys and things that will delight a child cars, school supplies, art supplies, hygiene items, jump ropes, balls, small musical things like kazoos or harmonicas, etc. Double-bag any hard candies, hard mints, suckers, etc. Add a baseball cap, t-shirt, sunglasses, flip flops, socks, gloves, scarves, etc., if you like. (These boxes go to hot, cold and in-between climates!) Please add AT LEAST $7.00 to the box to help pay for shipping (think how much jet fuel costs now!) If you do more than one box, just write a check for the total amount. Put it in an envelope on top of the toys and rubber band the lid closed. Or pay online, and OCC will send you an later telling you where your shoebox ended up! Have fun and think of the delight your gift will bring to some child! REMEMBER - DO NOT INCLUDE: Used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives or military figures; chocolate or food; out-of-date candy; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes, porcelain dolls, or glass containers; aerosol cans. The shoeboxes are stored in warehouses and transported in cargo planes, and these places can get hot! How sad to have melted candy, leaky bottles, or broken toys when the box was opened! The Carsons Story: Part II THE NEXT STEP: Seniors Moving from Home Ownership (Editor s note: This is the second in a series of articles sharing a personal story of how one couple in our church Lewis and Doris Carson made the move from home ownership to a life with fewer demands. Last time, Doris answered questions about considerations made in deciding to sell their home. This part continues that discussion.) What were some considerations that went into your decision-making about moving? Doris: Location was also a key decision. I had retired from teaching in 1975, Lewis from Eastman in 1983, and we felt happy with our retirement life of gardening, workshops, traveling, volunteering, as long as our health was good. Our children were scattered so widely (Hawaii, New York, North Carolina) that we never considered moving to be close to one of them. Our focus was always on remaining in the Kingsport area with our church and community ties. We were just not able to make the break to leave our backyard filled with fruit and flowers and Lewis basement workshop for cold weather fun. Another consideration was health. That continued to be our Someday in a few years period. When our children visited, each time they were using more words about too many steps and the danger of falling. We graduated to the words maybe next year for several more years. Lewis and son Kyle put in more handrails and posts as safety features in the house and on the porch. Lewis could no longer bend over to the ground to tend his precious tomato crop. He was beginning to have balance issues and had to give up ladders; that meant finding others to help do the maintenance he had always done on our 1950s house. We found a good many different people to mow our yard and do the pruning and leaf raking. We put our name on the prospect list at Baysmont, where we had plenty of observation time when we visited or gave travel programs (83 of them) over the years. We considered it to be the best continuing-care facility in the area of our interest, so we looked no farther; we knew we wanted to stay in East Tennessee.
