I hope that you have all thawed out and have been dug out of your homes. Here at the church we are trying to get things back to normal. Housekeeping first: The congregational meeting to vote on terms of call has been rescheduled for this Sunday, the 16th. The Longest Night service is also rescheduled for the 16th. We will have missed the second Sunday of Advent, but I hope that you all have been using your devotionals and were able to worship at home. As we continue through Advent and the Christmas season, we are reminded that things do not always go the way they are supposed to. We must go with the flow and work with what God is doing, not what we expect. As we move forward, I pray that we continue to keep our eyes open and move with God. Blessed Advent, Rev. From the Desk of the Parish Nurse, Joyce Caldwell Tips to help you weather the weather and stay safe balladhealthnews.org Before the Snow: Be prepared: Have an emergency kit in your car that includes a bag of cat litter, sand or other abrasive materials to get traction on ice; a shovel; flashlight and extra batteries; gloves or mittens; boots; ice scraper and snow brush; jumper cables; blanket; warning flares or triangles; food and water; first-aid items; extra windshield-washer fluid and antifreeze; and a piece of bright cloth. Take your cell: Charge your mobile phone and bring a charger with you. Fill it up: Fill your gas tank and check wiper blades, windshield-washer fluid, oil and antifreeze. During the Snow: Drive slowly: Accelerate and stop slowly to avoid skids. Hang back: Increase the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. The extra space will provide the longer distance you will need if you have to stop. Easy on the brake: Brake early by applying firm, steady pressure on the pedal. Don t stop if you can avoid it. If you can roll slowly until a traffic light changes, do it. It is much easier to get moving while rolling than from a full stop. Taking hills: Don t power up hills your wheels may just begin to spin. Instead get momentum before you reach the hill, and slow down when you reach the top. Careful on the bridge: Be especially cautious on bridges, which freeze first, and on highway exit ramps, which might have gotten less anti-icing material. If you get stranded: Stay in your vehicle, avoid over-exertion, let fresh air in, run the engine every 10 minutes, but make sure your exhaust pipe is free of snow. Turn on the dome light at night when the engine is running. Change your position often, move your hands and legs, rub your hands together or put them under your armpits or between your legs and remove your shoes occasionally and rub your feet. After the Snow: Clear your car: If clearing the snow and ice is too difficult for you, ask for help. Shovel with care: Pace yourself, shovel for 15 to 20 minutes at a time and be aware of the warning signs of heart attacks.

4 Meet Our Stephen Ministers / Leaders Diana Eldredge Christmas Nativity Play and Birthday Party for Jesus! It s time to walk with Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem again! Please join us for the Christmas Nativity Play and the Birthday Party for Jesus after the WOW dinner on Dec. 19th. If your child would like to be a part of the play please contact Rachel Lawson at Come Color the Story of Christmas! This month we are recognizing Diana Eldredge, who became a Stephen Minister and Leader in She took her week-long Stephen Leader training in Orlando in the winter of She serves as Recruitment Coordinator. This Service involves recruiting Stephen Ministers and Stephen Leaders. She also talks with anyone who requests a care giver and matches the care giver with the appropriate Stephen Minister. Diana has been a member of Waverly Road her entire life. Diana is married to Eddie and they have one son, Michael, one daughter, Sarah and a son-in-law, Kyle. She is very involved at Waverly Road. Her ministries include being a Food Pantry Volunteer, Meals on Wheels Deliverer, and will serve as Fellowship Elder beginning in Diana is a retired high school English teacher. Her hobbies include reading, swimming, and walking. She works part-time at Unique Boutique, helping women who have had mastectomies. Jesus came into this world a baby, beautiful, vibrant, and full of life. As we bring our posters to life, contemplate the wonder of His love for us and reflect on preparing ourselves for his arrival! You can color these posters anytime during the week in the Banner Room. They will also be set out during WOW dinner and distributed to Sunday School classes. This is a project for ALL ages! Advent Devotional Booklet...Get yours today! Pick up an Advent Devotional Booklet in the Narthex. The title is Hope-Full Living. Enjoy this guide filled with daily devotions and scriptures to help you live life to the fullest and enhance your preparation for Christmas. When asked about her feeling on Stephen Ministry, Diana responded, I have not had a care receiver yet but have been through the training. Being involved with this ministry is a blessing, but sometimes it is difficult to let others know what an impact this ministry can have in their lives. My involvement in this ministry has made me so grateful for my Stephen Ministry family and church family as well as more aware of how important listening and caring for others is in our community and world. We are there for our care receivers and listen with love not judgment. This ministry has taught me to actively listen without readily giving advice. It has also brought me into fellowship with a special group of people with giving hearts. Potential caregivers need to know that we are there for them and their problems deserve a listening ear. The biggest misconception about this ministry might be that Stephen Ministers need to have all the answers when in reality we are caregivers not cure givers. We appreciate the time and dedication that Diana has given as a Stephen Ministry/Leader at Waverly Road Presbyterian. Just a reminder. We will have a Congregational Meeting after Worship this coming Sunday 12/16 to vote on the Pastor s Terms of Call.

5 Cantemus Christmas Concert Ceremony of Carols Cantemus Women s Choir will present their Wassail Punch Ingredients 1 tablespoon whole cloves 6 cinnamon sticks 3 tablespoons chopped crystallized ginger 3 3/4 cups white sugar 2 quarts water 2 quarts orange juice 2 cups lemon juice 1 gallon apple cider Allrecipes.com Christmas Concert Ceremony of Carols this coming Sunday, December 16, 4:00 5:30 pm at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 800 Broad Street Kingsport, TN The concert features Benjamin Britten's Ceremony of Directions Wrap the cloves, cinnamon stick, and ginger in cheese cloth, and tie with string. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, water and spice bag. Simmer and stir until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, and refrigerate overnight. Before serving, stir in the orange juice, lemon juice, and cider. Reheat over medium low flame, and serve warm. Be careful not to boil. Carols, and other seasonal music. Chai Tea Latte Ingredients WRPC Blessing Box 2 individual tea bags 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice Tasteofhome.com 1 cup water 1 cup milk 1/4 cup packed brown sugar 2 tablespoons refrigerated French vanilla nondairy creamer Whipped topping and ground nutmeg, optional Directions Our Blessing Box is empty again! If you would like to contribute items, please feel free to place them inside the box unless it is full. If the Blessing Box is full, just bring your items to the WRPC Workroom and we will replenish when the box is empty again. Thanks to everyone for your continued support! Place the tea bags, cinnamon, ginger and allspice in the coffee filter of a drip coffeemaker. Add water; brew according to manufacturer's directions. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, combine the milk, brown sugar and creamer. Cook and stir over medium heat until heated through and sugar is dissolved. Pour milk mixture into mugs; stir in tea. Dollop with whipped topping and sprinkle with nutmeg if desired.
