2 Page 2 MUSINGS from the Pastor CENTRAL THOUGHTS June/July 2017 Leading Ahead Acts 1:[1-5] 6-9 [10-11] 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel? 7 He said to them, It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. Luke 24: Then he said to them, These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high. 50 And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God. These are two of the texts appointed for Ascension Day, observed this year on May 25 th. I think we often romanticize this part of the Gospel story, if we don t forget it totally. If the latter is what happens, we skip from resurrection right over to Pentecost. I suspect there are some who never get beyond the Resurrection. The event in both of these readings [by the same author by the way] gives us a complete picture of Jesus mission and purpose according to God the Father s plan. The apposition of these readings allow for a comparison/ contrast of the readings, yet, depending on in what order you read these, the details of one gives an explanation/expansion of the other. Luke s clothed with power from on high is interpreted for us in Acts 1:8a, with the words, you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you The continuing mission is given fullness by combining the information from both texts: that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things (Luke 24:7-8) and and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth (Acts 1:8b-9). These are not just ancient literature and this is not purely ancient romantic myth and story. This is the mission of God [missio dei]. The power from above when the Holy Spirit comes upon you is not some esoteric way of describing the enthusiasm displayed at Pentecost. This is a real event. This is a real phenomenon. This is the real action of Jesus promise from the Gospels.

3 Page 3 MUSINGS from the Pastor It does not fall upon the first century disciples alone. It is our receiving as well. We are empowered by the Holy Spirit out into and beyond our community to the ends of the earth. That is the first century disciples mission, that is the 21 s tury disciples mission. That is our mission. This preface to Acts, 1:1-11, sets the tone for the next 29 chapters. As we will discover as we journey through the page Acts, the Holy Spirit is the driving force behind the proclamation and deeds of the apostles. More importantly, it create tations about how the story will communicate about the nature of the truth it puts forth. We are chapter 29. How will th ter read? Ascension Day Prayer Almighty God, your only Son was taken into the heavens and in your presence, intercedes for us. Receive us and our p for all the world, and in the end, bring everything into your glory, through Jesus Christ, our Sovereign and Lord, who l reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. And we re on a mission to save lives and celebrate life. Every single day. Education Committee Education Committee 4/26/17 Sunday School A tentative calendar for the year has been set. Looking for two teachers (younger grades) and a treasurer. Confirmation Finished for this year. Pastor Kent reports it was a great group of students. Pastor Kent will work on a set of requirements in addition to the 30 sermon notes (acolyte, reader, usher, playing an instrument, serving, etc.) to start next year. Vacation Bible School Set for July (counselors arrive on July 23rd). Registration/Health forms were sent home with Sunday School students. Counselors lodging will be at Vodegel s. Need lunch host for Sunday and dinner hosts for Monday and Tuesday. PARISH COUNCIL MEETING May 10th, 2017 Hosted by Grue Council Meeting opened by Parish President Justin Anderson Devotions by Pastor Kent from Psalm 23:3-4 Reports given: M/S/C to accept Secretary s report M/S/C to accept Treasurer s report Old Business: None New Business Parish Picnic Grue hosting in August and will confirm date. New Martin Luther film - this is a feature-length film about Martin Luther and the Reformation filmed in historic locations across Europe. We agreed this would be a good fall family event and tabled for further discussion at August meeting. Next Parish meeting will be held Wednesday August 9th, 7:00 pm at Peace. 5 Page 5 PEACE Council News PEACE COUNCIL MEETING May 10th, 2017 Attending: Justin Anderson, Wayne Risbrudt, Justin Eberhardt, Craig Koefod, Tim Cunningham, Pastor Kent and Janet Novak Absent: Teresa Magnuson, Don Hanson, Mary Johnsrud, Harlan Balgaard Devotions were led by Pastor Kent as part of Parish Meeting Meeting called to order by President Justin Anderson at 8:15pm after Parish Meeting M/S/C to accept secretary s report. M/S/C to accept treasurer s report COMMITTEE REPORTS are now sent and read prior to meeting and will be included in newsletter. Highlights mentioned here only where applicable. Property & Mgmt addition M/S/C to give Jim Rylander to end of June to remove if still interested. If not removed by then, we will ask Harlan to demolish. Wayne has action to follow-up. Education VBS scheduled for July Counselors lodging will be at Vodegel s (thank you) but looking for Sunday lunch hosts and dinner hosts for Monday and Tuesday evening. Pastor s Report tentatively 21 new members (7 families) joining OLD BUSINESS E-Giving (Automatic withdrawl gifting options) Printed materials will be available in June. Appreciation shared for all the design work done by Teresa Magnuson on this project. Name Tags please wear in June. Cemetery Committee - No one had been assigned/elected at annual meeting. Wayne agreed to coordinate activities with Presbyterian contact. NEW BUSINESS Consensus to utilize PhoneVite to remind and invite members to attend services on 5/14 where we will celebrate Mothers, our Seniors and the Godwins. We d also like to give a huge shout out to the Women s Group for making us such beautiful quilts! They will not only keep us warm wherever our paths take us this fall, but they will also be a reminder of all the love and support we have from our church family. Alyssa & Michael GRUE WELCA NEWS We held our monthly meeting May 16 th at 6:30 pm with Twila and Brenda hosting. We enjoyed good fellowship as we discussed Jesus the shepherd from the Gather Magazine. We are interested to know if some would like other Bible study materials. We are planning for the October fundraiser. A meat package has been ordered and we welcome suggestions for other items to use for the raffle. We continue to quilt and have received lots of supplies. 10 Page 10 PEACE WELCA NEWS Spring Greetings to the Women of Peace Lutheran, Thank you to Group leader, Lynette Rohloff, for coordinating many of the activities in May. Our Mother s Day Sunday was wonderful and busy. It was a great service honoring many important people in our lives. Appreciation also for all who served for Bing s funeral lunch. A special thank you to Judy Godwin who served faithfully in WELCA for many years. Her example of serving and supporting all activities definitely went above and beyond the call of duty but we appreciate the leadership and role modeling she provided for the rest of us. Throughout the years, she has touched and been involved in all aspects of WELCA. Judy s contributions and fingerprints are everywhere! Thank you again and please know you will be missed! This newsletter covers June and July so I pray you will have an enjoyable couple of months. This is a time of more relaxation, reunions, picnics, Ashby Appreciation Days, etc. I pray you will allow yourself to slow down, walk away from the cell phone and be present. Truly enjoy the moment, the person you are visiting and try to turn off the urge to plan what s next. God will take care of you!
