1 The Chimes MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH JULY 2017 Special Congregational Meeting WHEN: Sunday, July 2, 2017 TIME: Immediately following the 10:30am service in the Sanctuary PURPOSE: Vote on whether or not to extend a call to Pastor Ronald Windecker Vote on the compensation package From Pastor Linda As we enter the second month of summer, we also enter fully into the season of Pentecost. The long green season of Pentecost provides a focus on the church of God, our actions, our ministry. Readings for the Sundays focus our attention on our growth, our ministry, as people of God. Our lives as disciples show our faith in choices we make, actions we take, or the priorities we demonstrate. Being a Christian is a twenty-four hour, seven day a week existence. The way we live shows others what we really believe because we act out of our real priorities. We respond with what is most important -- if it isn't Good, that shows clearly. No matter what we profess on Sunday, we are judged by the way we live, Monday through Saturday. God knows our hearts. Other people see our actions. Continued on p.2 Continued from p.1

2 Use this summer as a time to grow in faith. Add daily Bible Reading or devotions to your day. If there is interest, we can schedule additional Bible studies at different times or days. How about five weeks to study Galatians or First Peter? After hearing the creation story Sunday, would you like to study Genesis? Studying the Bible together helps us learn and grow. We are strengthened by one another. We learn from one another. We can grow our faith, stronger and deeper, together. Vacations and travel doesn't have to mean missing worship or study. Take it with you. Find a church to visit. Bring back a bulletin and share. You may provide an idea to enrich worship here at Zion. Certainly, you will enrich your own faith and relationship with God. As you travel, go with God. We pray, God be with all travelers, that they return safely, cradled in your loving arms. Amen. ~Pastor Linda Council Highlights Approved moving forward with joint Lutheran plan for the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, October 29, Approved Confirmation expectation service project. Approved purchase of street sign for Barbeque. Acted on air conditioner repairs for units not working. Approved purchase of programmable thermostats to replace existing ones. Acted on recommendations from Property Committee. p.2

3 Upcoming Event p.3 Zion WELCA Picnic is set for Thursday, July 6. All women of Zion and their spouse or guest are invited to attend the Women of the ELCA picnic on Thursday, July 6 at noon in Fellowship Hall. Pastor Linda will lead a Bible Study after the meal. Ice cream sundaes will be provided by the WELCA Board members. If you plan to come, please bring a salad, vegetable, fruit, meat or lettuce. The more variety the better! Hope to see you there. It will be a fun event. Call Committee Update Finally I can reveal some information. The call committee and council voted to put a name forth for a pastor. I announced to the congregation today that the call committee and council voted to present Pastor Ronald Windecker as the candidate to vote on. There will be a pot luck dinner on June 29 at 6 pm in the fellowship hall for the congregation to meet Pastor Windecker, wife Deborah and their two sons. There is a special called congregational meeting on July 2 for the congregation to extend a call to Pastor Windecker or not. Pastor Ronald Windecker is a fourth generation pastor. He served as Pastor in Columbus and Comfort, Texas. He is currently pastor in Beitel Memorial Lutheran Church in San Antonio Texas. He has served at Beitel Memorial since He was born in (Psalm 62:1)

4 VBS/Day Camp Update We had 16 campers in attendance! Thank you to Marina, Brittany, Brittnee and Lexi, the counselors from Cross Trails Ministry. Thank you to Peggy Jander for heading up feeding the campers, and to her kitchen helpers, Janalee Hannemann, Diane Mayer, Emma O Neal, Barbara Sultemeier, Dorcella Sunday, Julia Weden and Mary Wilson. Thank you Janalee Hannemann also for helping with the arts & crafts. Thank you Jim & Bobbie Schonaerts and Paul & Janalee Hannemann for housing and feeding the counselors. Thanks to John & Carolyn Weaver and the Men s Breakfast group for providing meals. Thanks to Pastor Linda and Christi Fowler for helping keep it organized, and to Al Sunday for chauffeuring some of the campers to and from church. Thank you to all those who donated snacks and food. Pastoral Act Dorthy Hannemann passed away on June 6, 2017 at the age of 93 years. Her funeral was held in Zion on June 9, 2017 with Pastor Hartmann officiating. Internment was held at Greenwood Cemetery. Congratulations Nesbitt Bennett is turning 97 on 7/11. She is the 2nd most senior member of Zion. Glen & Peggy Treibs will celebrate 45 years of marriage on 7/8. p.4 Jim & Diane Mayer will celebrate 45 years of marriage on 7/22.

6 Thank You Notes p.6 The family of Dorthy Hannemann wishes to thank our Zion family and friends for all the support given us in the last number of years, and most recently upon her death. Mom s funeral service was wonderful and we appreciate all who helped to make that happen. We know first hand all the things that go on behind the scenes before, during, and after the service and the meal. Many hands! Your generous memorials, cards, flowers, food & phone calls are very much appreciated. I know that the visits that were made to see Mom meant the world to her, and we are thankful for all who prayed, loved and cared for her. Growing up at Zion has truly been a blessing for me and I hope to bring my family back to the congregation one day. ~Thanks again, Eric Koennecke Word Alone, Grace Alone, Christ Alone & Faith Alone One of the attractions of going to a restaurant is choosing from a variety of menu options. Car dealerships entice you with multiple makes and models, and then to enhance the experience each car comes with a plethora of optional features. We like to have a variety of possibilities from which to choose. This same mindset has a way of shaping some people s approach to religion. As Martin Luther began his career as a monk and immersed himself in the story of Scripture, he came to understand that God works quite differently: He isn t interested in giving us options. This understanding indelibly shaped Luther s life and the theology that flowed out of his pen. While he was alive, Luther was often perceived as being uncompromising, hard headed, and not open to others opinions. But Luther found that Scripture didn t give him room to compromise. The Gospel was at stake, and forgiveness of sin is not an opinion; it is Christ s unequivocal declaration. Luther s use of the Latin word sola reflects this reality. The word sola means alone. It removes options and choices. There is no wiggle room, no gray area, and no room for doubt. And no religious smorgasbord when it comes to matters of faith. Over the next four weeks, we will unpack four different words Luther attached to the word sola: Word, grace, Christ, and faith.
