4 Opiio A4 Thursday, JULY 27, 2017 Marijuaa it's ot a big deal...or is it? BY DEB NARO Cotributor Have you oticed that attitudes are chagig about marijuaa? I ve heard parets say, He just smokes a little pot it s ot a big deal. Actually, it is a very big deal. The struggle to keep our childre away from marijuaa keeps gettig more ad more difficult. Marijuaa use is ow legal i several states, New Hampshire has decrimialized marijuaa, we have a local medical marijuaa dispesary, ad the media acts if everyoe is gettig high this has created a culture of cofusio for our kids about marijuaa use. Do t buy ito claims that it s just a little pot ad they re ot really doig it all the time. We eed to get serious about marijuaa, ad if you suspect or catch your child gettig high- - do somethig about it immediately. Today s pot is ot the marijuaa of the '60s or '70s. I the '70s, it cotaied 4 percet THC, ad today it s over 18 percet, makig it much more dagerous to developig bodies ad brais. Here are a few miscoceptios debuked with facts. Marijuaa use does ot lead to other drug use: Log-term studies show that very few youg people use other illegal drugs without first tryig marijuaa. People ca still fuctio o marijuaa: Marijuaa egatively affects memory, judgmet, ad perceptio. Marijuaa is ot addictive: Log-term marijuaa use ca lead to physical addictio ad tees usig marijuaa frequetly suffer from withdrawal symptoms. Effects of marijuaa are miimal: studies have prove it ca permaetly lower a perso s IQ up to eight poits. Here are a few warig sigs of a problem. Your child may have red/ad or blood shot eyes, loss of coordiatio, act giddy, tired, paraoid or filled with axiety, ad/or have the muchies ad be hugry for ay food they ca get their hads o. With regular use of marijuaa, your tee may start havig problems with school work, decliig grades, truacy issues, bad moods, ad may quit their extracurricular activities ad other hobbies. If their clothes smell like marijuaa, you should be cocered ad look for drug parapheralia. These items may be hidde i their rooms, betwee mattresses, i fake cas, i jackets, backpacks or cars. Look for thigs like pipes, rollig papers, clips that smell like marijuaa, baggies with residue, bur stais, scales, icese, ad plat magazies. If you suspect your child may be usig marijuaa, sit dow ad have a talk. It s always a good idea to cosult your pediatricia for screeig ad follow up. You will the kow if treatmet is i order. Remember drug use is ot ievitable it s prevetable. Youth cite their parets as oe of the largest iflueces i their decisio ot to use drugs. Your child is far less likely to use pot if you talk at a early age about the risks of drugs ad talk about it ofte. More iformatio o the risks of marijuaa use ad solutios ca be foud o our Youth Advisory ad Advocacy Coucil s PSA, CADY s World 2.0 the Marijuaa Editio, o the homepage of the CADY website at cadyic.org. Migliore was very firm ad upfrot with Bus. Admi. Limiai about this issue. Mr. Migliore, I hope whe you get elected by your costituets, that you stay egaged with your costituets ad hear them out o importat issues both federally ad locally. You seemed to do that already as a school board member, ad I trust that you'll do that as a legislative member. Voters of Grafto Couty District 9, vote for Vicet Paul Migliore o Sept. 5 i the special electio agaist Joshua Adjutat. Nick Crosby Groto To the Editor: This is my 21st update, but this time, it will be a little differet. I wat to talk about why we should be cocered about immigratio, particularly from Muslim coutries. Frakly, it s all simple math. Whe the majority of the populatio is differet from the origial ethic mix, it chages the focus of the coutry. Our origial majority ethic mix was Judeo Christia, ad this is the mix that eables this coutry to be the greatest coutry i the world. We ad our costitutioal republic caot survive without a Judeo-Christia majority. It was the same group that origially formed the basis of Europe. We followed the cultural backgroud of our Europea acestors, but we took it to the ext level to escape the chais of a feudal society. We recogized the origis of our liberty ad ackowledged the source. The Europeas, seeig what had we had doe, followed with similar actios but ot to the same extet. Today they are payig the price. They were also ifiltrated by the socialist commuist movemet comig from their east. They paid a price with their decisios to allow massive immigratio ad they are ow reapig the cosequeces. We must ot fall ito the same trap. We must ot abado our source of liberty to follow them dow the same path ito catastrophe. Germay ad the rest of Europe sealed their fate 70 years or more ago at the ed of WWII. They believed that govermet was the solutio to all thigs, ad their persoal comfort was more importat tha the log-term survival of their culture. I fact, I thik they took their cultural survival for grated. Two world wars made devastatig chages to their coditios, but this was ot a excuse to abado the belief that people were the solutio, rather tha the govermet. Demographically, their birth rate is about per female, ad it takes 2.3 births per female to maitai a stable populatio. Germay ad the rest of Europe have less tha years before their ethic backgroud is outumbered. I Germay, first Turks were imported as workers, but that was ot eough. The rest of the Muslim world was welcomed ext. It is the character of Islam that whe they gai cotrol, they remove history. They do ot assimilate ito the coutry that welcomes them. Remember all the old churches you visited i Europe? Whe the Muslims gai cotrol by sheer umbers, they will destroy them ad ay of the historical represetatio as well. It will ot matter if the US comes to their rescue. It will be too late. Europe will cease to exist as we romatically remember it ad as the travel brochures tell us. The failure is ievitable because they are below the replacemet level to sustai the ext geeratio. Say goodbye to Europe as we kew it! By the way... the U.S. birth rate is barely 2.0, ad I'm ot sure that is't ehaced by immigratio, both illegal ad legal. The iterestig poit is that most immigrats that are preveted come from Christia South America coutries. Why are we so opposed to fidig a way for them to legally immigrate ad so ready to welcome large umbers of Muslims who wat to elimiate us. We aively preted their ati-christia backgroud will somehow assimilate. Aother iterestig observatio is that Mexico's birth rate is startig to drop below 2.3. Who is goig to do the work that Mexicas wo't do i their ow coutry? Will Mexico build a wall? Will Mexico let eighborig coutries trasit e route to the Uited States or will they ecourage them to stay i their coutry to supplemet their dwidlig populatio? Please do t take my suggestio as supportig illegal immigratio. I am ot. People who came here illegally eed to go home. If they choose to eter legally, they should meet the criteria ad assimilate. But we eed to regulate how they eter, ad we must also limit the umbers we immigrate o the basis of what we believe is the best mix for the type of society we wat to be, based o our history ad what has bee demostrated to be effective. Please cotact me via at Dave@Saborhall. et or call me at to share your thoughts or if you have questios. Cheers! Dave Testerma Represetative Hill & Frakli Editor's ote: It is ot ordiarily our policy to publish opiio pieces that costitute hate speech, as we believe to be the case with regard to Mr. Testerma's views o immigratio, but as he is a elected represetative to the state legislature, we felt that it was importat for the local electorate to be aware of his positio o this issue.

5 North Coutry Notebook Opiio NEWFOUND LANDING, THURSDAY, JULY 27, 2017 A5 A old road ad old ways stad fast, i the face of a iteratioal scheme By Joh Harriga Columist Route 145, which twists its way alog the so-called back way from Colebrook to Pittsburg, is oe of New Hampshire s more sought-after roads. Motorcycle riders ad sports car drivers seek it out for the very reasos that it makes highway desigers groa. It takes a certai amout of skill with steerig wheel, brakes, ad gas pedal to drive Route 145, eve at the posted speed limit of 40. Explore several ways i which idividuals comig ito wealth from low- to middle-icome backgrouds ca take care of their ow fiacial health ad fid balace. Durig the day, the ext geeratio of wealth is busy buildig startups or ruig projects for major corporatios. If you are a idividual comig ito wealth for the first time from a low- to middle-icome backgroud, a uique set of challeges presets itself as you attempt to both maage ad ejoy your hard eared-wealth. Oe of these challeges may be studet loa debt. Besides avigatig yourself out of debt, it ca be tough to avigate relatioship dyamics ad commitmets whe you are ew to wealth. You may feel a uderstadable pull to give back to your family ad commuity, but have a hard time balacig these commitmets with those of your ow selfcare ad persoal ivestmet. As your fiacial positio improves, it is commo to experiece guilt ad overwhelmig feeligs as you otice your improved positio relative to your family ad frieds. These feeligs ca have a impact o how you relate to your family ad commuity ad how you uderstad your role ad fuctio i those relatioships. Couple these feeligs with others' ew perceptio of you as a wealthy" perso, ad it ca be easy to fall prey to a perceived resposibility for others that exhausts your emotioal Joh Harriga The replacemet of a bridge betwee Colebrook ad Pittsburg meas that state decisio-makers are gettig a look at a slice of North Coutry life they might otherwise have missed. ad fiacial resources. Here are a few ways to take care of your ow fiacial health as you avigate this excitig but challegig ew positio of wealth. Start Savig Now Whe we're youg, it is easy to feel as if retiremet is a lifetime away. We may sped very little time, if ay, thikig about practical ways to prepare for our golde years. "I'll take care of that i a decade or two," oe might thik. But if aythig teaches us that the time to start savig is ow, it is the importace of compoud iterest o your retiremet cotributios. For a example of how compoud iterest ca make a cosiderable differece, imagie this example of a 22-year-old who starts cotributig 10 percet of his $60,000 aual salary to his 401(k), with 2 percet added by his employer. By the time of his retiremet, he could ed up with over a millio dollars as his est egg. I compariso, imagie a 45-year-old who cotributes $1,000 per moth, but over just a 20-year period. She will reach retiremet with aroud 50 percet less tha the 22-year-old, eve though she cotributed more mothly ad more i total over the life of her cotributios. Compoud iterest is a perfect reaso to start savig ow, eve if all you ca afford at the momet is a modest mothly commitmet of less tha 10 percet of your mothly salary. Build a Budget Scrap the etitlemet gee" metality that is all too commo amog milleials. This is a metality that resists advice, especially whe it comes to budgetig. Rather tha focusig o ear-term pleasures, build a cocrete ad coheret five-year pla to huker dow o short-term success. I additio to the five-year pla, i the immediate term there are certai rules of thumb that may help to alig you with smarter budgetig. For example, it is suggested ot to let your mothly ret exceed 30 percet of your gross mothly icome. Relatedly, try ot to let your vehicle expeses exceed 10 percet of your icome. Ad while it ca be hard to determie how much to sped o your wats uless you have cocrete figures, cosider workig with a 30 percet-ad-uder after-tax allowace for discretioary expeses. S.M.A.R.T.1 Ivestmets There are a umber of differet ways to ivest your wealth for logterm beefit. You might fially make a go at that startup idea or ivest i further educatio. Purchasig your first home is aother great way to ivest your ew wealth ad esure that this wealth supports you i the loger term. It is uderstadable ad admirable to wat to give back to your family ad commuity, but you will be of more service over time if you take care of your ow fiacial health first by ivestig i yourself. These three suggestios (savig for retiremet, budgetig ad ivestig) ca help you to feel more grouded i your fiacial future, ad also help to offset the stresses that come with ew wealth. NHEC is a member-owed electric distributio cooperative servig 80,000 members MARK ON THE MARKETS Idexed or maaged i 115 New Hampshire commuities. Scholarship fudig is provided by the NHEC Foudatio, a o-profit 501(c)(3) fud that receives cotributios from NHEC members who agree to have their mothly electric bill rouded up to the ext dollar with the proceeds BY MARK PATTERSON The heyday of successful mutual fud maagers started i the late '70 s through the '80 s. The great oes really eared the right to maage your moey as opposed to usig a lowcost idex fud that is very popular ow, those maagers, like Peter Lych at Fidelity were well worth it. What about curret times? Why is it that low-cost idex fuds have bee very difficult to beat i recet times? Regulatio G was eacted March 28, 2003 as part of the Sarbaes-Oxley act. Other tha a lot of accoutig regulatios that I am ot kowledgeable eough to speak of, I will give you the layma s terms, ad my opiio of how it affected maaged mutual fuds. After the fall of Ero, WorldCom ad a few other choice compay failures, Reg G was eacted so that certai accoutig stadards ad reportig of fiacial iformatio had to be dissemiated i a certai format simultaeously to all. The hard-workig, street -smart fud maagers had forged workig relatioships with may compay CFOs ad CEOs that their fud had ivested moey. I imagie a sceario to go somethig like this; fud maager walks i to a Costco i the early 1980s whe there were ot a whole lot of Costco s aroud. The fud maager buy s some freshly groud beef ad some orgaic strawberries, ad o his way out, he picks up some Kirklad brad vodka ad tequila. He takes these items home, has a cookout with the eighbors ad is showered with complimets o the tastiess of the burgers the berries ad the alcohol. So, this fud maager makes a appoitmet with the home office ad speaks to the CFO regardig ivestmet ito the compay via a small-cap growth fud that he maages. Durig that meetig fud maager fids out that the groud beef is sourced from local cattle farmers, the strawberries are sourced from privately owed strawberry farms, the vodka is bottled i the same distillery as Grey goose ad the tequila from the same distillery as Patro. Excellet quality, half the price. The CFO obviously is iterested i a big ivestmet i the compay s stock from this mutual fud compay, so he supplies beefittig the Foudatio. For more iformatio about the Foudatio, please visit www. hec.com/hec-foudatio/. additioal detail about Costco s pro forma umbers. The fud maager likes what he sees ad tastes, he begis to accumulate shares i Costco. The oly thig that happeed here is that the fud maager recogized the compay that had potetial, that he persoally liked ad proceeded with his due diligece o the compay s fiacials. It was successful for the shareholders, the fud maager ad the employees of Costco. As the years go by, this fud maager cotiues to purchase shares Costco i other fuds that he maages, because ow Costco is o loger a small-cap compay. Now of course other fud maagers are buyig Costco because they realize it is a good holdig for their mutual fud, however they do ot get the persoal attetio that the origial fud maager who believed i them ad ivested i them cotiues to receive. Reg G chaged all that. The origial fud maager received all iformatio at the same time as all the other maagers, ivestmet bakig firms, ad the public. The competitive advatage that the fud maagers had i the past because of their hard work ad willigess to forge relatioships with the compay s that their fuds ivested i, was goe. I m sure there are situatios i the smallcap area or emergig markets where a good maager ca dissemiate iformatio better tha others, but i the large-cap area, I do ot believe a maager ca cosistetly outperform a idex.
