1 Westminster Presbyterian Church December 2018 The Broadcaster "Making Disciples by Celebrating the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ" The Pastor s Page Advent Advent means Coming. It is a season of expectation when we await Jesus Christ, God's Messiah, coming into our world. We commemorate Jesus incarnation and his birth to Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem those many years ago. And we look ahead to Christ's promised return, our hearts expectant for Christ's judgement, restoration and peace. INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Dates to Remember 2 News 3-8 Calendar 9 Worship Plan 10 The coming of Jesus Christ is also personal. As we pray through Advent we make room in our homes and room in our hearts for Jesus to come and dwell with us. Jesus, the joy of God our Father, is also the coming joy of not only our world but for each of our souls. Jesus is the living promise to our world that God had chosen to be Emmanuel - God with us. Though many so-called faithful turn their backs on the world expecting God to rescue only them, God proves his love for sinners and for the world he created by sending us Jesus his Son. As a church, it is appropriate for us to celebrate Advent not only for what God has done for us, but also with hopeful expectation of what God is still doing. We believe that God is alive in our midst as we gather together, and that the Holy Spirit calls to us to behold and embrace the ministry of Jesus Christ still necessary in our world today. With each passing week's theme, we reflect on the promises of God for our congregation as we ask God what he desires for our church. Who, O God, is your hope for your world? Who, O God, is your peace? Who, O God is the joy of desiring hearts? Who, O God, is the expression of your love for us? While the answer is and always will be Christ Jesus, reminding ourselves each year that Jesus is the meaning of our lives and the purpose of the church orients us back in the direction of obedience to God. I am thankful to celebrate Advent with you as your Pastor. I believe it is a wonderful season for us as a church, one that wells up a fountain of gladness in us for who we are as the church of Jesus Christ. Peace, Pastor David

HANGING OF THE GREENS The church calendar is filled with wonderful traditions things we do each year to come together and celebrate our love of Christ and our love for each other. One of the most favorite Westy Pres traditions is the Hanging of the Greens, where members young and old spend an hour or two before Advent decorating the sanctuary, narthex, library, entry, and exterior. Nativity scenes are set up; trees are decorated throughout from the Chrismon Tree in the sanctuary to the Mitten Tree in the Narthex; greens are hung from the rafters ; and lights are hung on the bushes and trees outside. And this year thanks to Bob and Shirley Briggs and the Nut Fund we will have new greens to hang! The old ones were getting a little tired. THANKS Bob and Shirley!!! Due to a conflict with the Mariner s Holiday Party, this year s Hanging of the Greens is Saturday, December 1st, at 10:00 am. Pizza will be served to all the volunteers when we are done! Please join in the fun! 4

6 2 POSITIONS: HELP WANTED FOR FISH! BOARD OF DIRECTORS: FISH of Westminster is governed by a Board of Directors. Each church - Westy Pres and Westminster United Methodist - is represented on the Board by three volunteers. We are looking for a new volunteer to help represent Westy Pres on the Board. This assignment will take 8-10 hours a year, including participating in four Board meetings one a quarter, helping out at fundraisers such as serving at the Annual Flapjack Fundraiser, and helping with writing reports, grant applications, and information for web site. Shelf Stocker: FISH needs additional help to stock shelves one day a week. It takes minutes to stock the shelves before the food bank opens. The volunteer must be able to carry 25 pounds and lift items above their heads. Are you interested in either position? If so please contact Doris or Melissa. A $12 CARE PACKAGE CAN HELP THE HOMELESS You see them everywhere. Even with the extremely low unemployment rate, homelessness still exists. A teen, a veteran, a senior, a family can find themselves homeless. FISH routinely serves a few homeless every month at the food bank. Some are people who never thought they would be in this position. Others are chronic homeless and no longer see a way out. Community dinners are frequently the only hot home-cooked meal a homeless person in our neighborhood gets. As you know, FISH recently received an anonymous gift to help with our mission as part of a larger gift to our church. Through conversations, we decided to use a portion of that gift to put together care packages for our homeless clients. With bulk buying and free shipping from Amazon, we were able to purchase enough items to put together 65 care packages both one time only packages that include a pair of socks and a portable can opener and monthly packages including band-aids, toothpaste, lotions, and wipes. On Sunday, November 25 th, volunteers gathered to assemble the 65 care packages after coffee fellowship. What a wonderfully blessing this financial gift was to our congregation! Aren t we lucky we can share this gift with our neighbors? Another chance is coming for you to join us at book group! We will be meeting on January 13, at 7:00 p.m. at Rich and Barb Day s home. This time we are reading The Spy Lover by Kiana Davenport. It s available on Kindle. Come and let your voice be heard! 5

7 At the B'nai Torah community dinner, many of us welcomed our homeless friend, Byron, who had a stroke a few weeks ago and has been in respite care since then. That care ends this month and he has no place to go except back on the street even though he is not fully recovered from the stroke. He would like to have a small trailer he could live in. His funds are very limited. Ask your friends or family if they know of a camper or mobile home that he could rent. He will appreciate any help we Presbyterians can give. GREAT NEWS: HAVE A HEART is reorganizing to allow the Smiths, Jo, Wayne, and Debbie to retire from leadership roles and maybe be emeritus or consultants as needed. More information to come. REMEMBER THAT NEW TOYS ARE NEEDED TO FILL SANTA'S STOCKING FOR KIDS IN WESTMINSTER PUBLIC SCHOOLS Just place your contribution in the Have A Heart box or give to Wayne or Jo. Thank you!
