1 Westminster Presbyterian Church August 2018 The Broadcaster "Making Disciples by Celebrating the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ" The Pastor s Page News from PC(USA): This past June, the 223rd General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) met in St. Louis, Missouri. INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Dates to Remember 2 News 3-8 Of the work of the delegates who attended, here are a few important highlights that affect our church today. Calendar Worship Plan 9 10 * Ruling Elder Vilmarie Cintron-Olivieri (of Miami, FL) and Reverend Cindy Kohlmann (of Boston, MA) were elected co-moderators of the 223rd General Assembly. * Delegates voted to continue its corporate engagement with, rather than divest from Fossil Fuel companies. * Approved actions from the Israel/Palestine commission to: 1. Ask RE/MAX LLC to end its sale and rental of property on occupied, disputed land in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. 2. Voice support for all efforts to peacefully bring together Israelis and Palestinians. 3. Ask the State of Israel to fully comply with the International Declaration of Human Rights to end discriminatory practices and urge the U.S. government to rejoin the UN Human Rights Council. * The assembly also engaged in various acts of public witness to engage in issues of racism, poverty and violence, including: 1. Strongly condemned 'the unjust, racist disparagement of people and entire nations'. 2. Called for an immediate moratorium on the imposition of the death penalty. 3. Affirmed and celebrated the 'full dignity and humanity' and gifts of people of all gender identities and sexual orientations. 4. Called upon the US government to end family separations at the US-Mexico border, and to inform every parent of where their children are being held and in what condition. 5. Initiated the process of including Martin Luther King's "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" in our Presbyterian Book of Confession. (Source: pcusa.org) As you think about what it means to be a Presbyterian, consider the way this group of more than 500 national delegates, representing all of us, engaged in the meaningful social issues of our day and asked how, as Presbyterians, we can be good citizens of our nation and our world. 3 Bob s Musings Thank you for being a part of 126-year-old congregation in Westminster Colorado as we prepare for the next 126 years. Long Range Facility Planning What is the Westminster Presbyterian Church going to be when it grows up? Toward that end, the Session has authorized a Long Range Facility Plan to look at the needs of the 61-year-old facilities. Gillespie Hall heating is in the floor and it is difficult to control. Our 61-year-old boiler needs TLC. I invite you to call me at to set up a time so we can talk about how you think our facilities need to evolve. Attendance for the year is equal to a year ago - that is good news!!!! Remember to join us as we worship each week, for two reasons - we need to enjoy your participation in our church family and for you to be an active part of that church family. Bob Briggs 3

4 A magical evening of elegant dining, live music and dancing. Friday, September 21st, 4:30 pm to 8 pm Nickless Hall Tickets $15 or 2 for $25 in advance, $20 at the door. (All proceeds to benefit the window replacement fund.) PW News At the May meeting of the Baker-Hudson Circle, the women voted to change our circle s name. The Bakers have retired, and we ve lost track of the Hudsons. Our circle is now know as: The Elizabeth Nickless Circle Elizabeth was instrumental in starting PW at our church and was a member of the Baker-Hudson circle. Treasurer report: June expenses $19,551 Year to date June expenses $147,621 revenue. $18,391 revenue. $107,929 Difference. -$ 1,160 Difference -39,692 It is summer, vacations etc. but we still need to keep the doors open and that means we must make our pledges. VBS was great fun - and a good opportunity to interact with the community. 4

5 FISH FLAPJACK FUNDRAISER, SATUR- DAY, SEPTEMBER 8!!!! Please join us at the Westminster Applebee s 90 th and Wadsworth for a delicious breakfast of pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, juice, milk, and coffee to raise money for the FISH Foodbank. We have joined with our sister FISH Foodbank at the Westminster United Methodist Church to host a flapjack fundraiser at our neighborhood Applebee s. The funds will go to support the work of both foodbanks! Date: Saturday, September 8 Time: 7:30 am 9:30 am Cost: $10 per person/$6 for children ages 4 to 8/free to children 3 and under. Tickets will go on sale Sunday, August 19th. Volunteers from Westy Pres and WUMC will help out the staff of Applebee s by seating and serving customers. The staff of Applebee s will be doing all the cooking, so you know the food will be good! We look forward to seeing you there! A great big THANK YOU for VBS snacks! THANK YOU ALL so very much for your amazing generosity! Your snack donations were a big hit with all the youngsters at VBS this past week. From a wide variety of juices to animal crackers to pretzel squares to Trix cereal, M&Ms and colored marshmallows for gorp to cheese sticks to grapes, oranges and apple slices to Goldfish and Cheez-it s, we snack ladies had what we needed to help snack time enhance the VBS experience! OPEN YOUR HEART AND HOME to a high school student from Spain or Germany for the coming school year Volunteer host families (with or without children) as well as single parents are needed to provide food, a bed and a loving home to one of our high school students for the coming school year starting in late August or early September through May, EMF students have medical insurance, spending money for their personal expenses and expect to share their host family s daily life including household responsibilities. They speak English, are well-screened and eager to experience life in America. Their stay here is sponsored and supervised by EMF (Educational Merit Foundation), a non-profit, educational exchange program. It is not too late to apply. For more information on EMF students, please call Marie-Claude Dijoud now at or visit our web site at EMF is a small non-profit, foreign-exchange student organization looking for caring host families in your community. We have 6 students (girls) from Spain and Germany who would like to come for the school year and are waiting for their match with a volunteer host family. They need to be placed by August 31st to be able to come. We believe that sharing the life of an American host family and going to school contributes to a better world understanding and is an unforgettable experience for both the student and the host family. American students benefit from meeting foreign students. 5

6 Steve and Marge Innes 50th Wedding Anniversary 50 years, 3 girls, 8 grandchildren - a good life! So far so good! Choir Rehearsal Starts on Wednesday, August 22nd Please join the group in making a joyful noise. Practice begins at 7 pm in the Choir Room. We're redesigning our website and logo to be more attractive to potential new members. Here's the logo, designed and donated by Carrie Hebert: Feel free to stop by the website. 7 CONFIRMATION CLASS COMING THIS SEPTEMBER! In September, middle and senior high school students (who have not had the opportunity to participate) will begin their confirmation class. Confirmation provides these young people an opportunity to grow in their Christian faith and learn what it means to be a follower of Jesus, a member of their church, and to confirm the promises made at their baptism. Youth who have not been baptized have the opportunity to do so on Confirmation Sunday. Classes will meet the 1st and 3rd Sundays of September- December at noon in Youth Room of church, but may not meet on Labor Day Weekend. BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS, SUNDAY, AUGUST 26 It s time to celebrate the beginning of the new school year. Each school year brings joy and excitement as well as uncertainty and wonder. On Sunday, August 26, ALL students (preschool, elementary school, middle and senior high school, and college) are invited to bring their backpacks, carryalls, or briefcases to church for the annual Blessing of the Backpacks during Sunday morning worship! We pray that the year be full of promise for the students and their teachers. 8 ONE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! That ONE is Mary. Mary lives in Westminster and was made aware of the HAVE A HEART program. She wanted to help poverty-level families. She decided to buy diapers for the younger children. She tapped her family and friends and went to Walmart to buy diapers. She told the manager what she was doing and he became very helpful. She collected hundreds of diapers and then became ill for a few months. With health restored, she again set out on her diaper project. Mary is relentless and at last count she had donated 5000 diapers to HAVE A HEART families! ONE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS Sunday, October 7 On Sunday, October 7, we celebrate the gift of our pets to our families. We invite all of the Westy Pres community to bring their pets for a short liturgy and individual pet blessings. All pets are welcome dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits, gerbils, birds, goldfish. The service will begin at 2:00 pm outside in Church Park. Please bring your pet on a leash or in a carrier. 8
