1 Pilgrim s Progress July, 2011 SOME FUN FACTS ABOUT INDEPENDENCE DAY 1. There are 30 places across the nation that have the word Liberty in their name. Four states in the U.S. have Liberty counties - Florida, Texas, Georgia, and Montana. 2. In Major League Baseball history, four men of importance were born on July 4th New York Yankees owner, George Steinbrenner; Hall of Famer, Mickey Welch; Former Major League pitcher, George Mullin; and Vinny Castilla of the Colorado Rockies. 3. In 1777, one year after the Declaration of Independence was signed into existence, the first official July 4th celebration was held. It wasn t until 1941 that the day July 4th become a legal holiday. 4. One US President, Calvin Coolidge, was born on the Fourth of July. Three American Presidents passed away on this day Adams, Jefferson, and Monroe. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died within hours of each other on this same day in Oddly enough, July 4th is also celebrated as the Independence from Meat Day. This observance News in Brief was created by The Vegetarian Awareness Network in Tennessee. 6. Back in 1777, fireworks were certainly not as we know them today. One of the first displays of fireworks were on this day when American patriots placed lit candles on their windowsills to show their love of country. If a windowsill was bare, it was certain that person was loyal to the English crown. 7. It is estimated that on a single July 4th holiday, 150 million hot dogs will be consumed by Americans. 8. There is a reason why the once Monday, July 4 Independence Day Office Closed July 10-6 PM Movie & Desserts The movie tonight is The Visitor: In a world of six billion people, it only takes one to change your life. This is a time when we remember the importance of our relationships at all levels. Our families, our church community our cities and our nation each have their times of recognition and reflection. We are mindful of the celebrations of our nation s birth and hold all the world in our thoughts and prayers for peace, justice and prosperity. We are mindful of the change in pace and scheduling of the summer and hold all of our church family in our thoughts and prayers for the grace of God to touch each of us in the variety of places we worship on Sundays or any day: in other church in our travels, in nature and in the company of visiting loved ones. May your summertime be blessed with peace and love. Ann Newsletter Deadline for August is July 19 th 2 Pilgrim s Progress July 2011

3 Val and Ken Scarisbrick will be enjoying an All-Grandkids Summertime... 4th July with our 3 adopted grandkids in Lake Oswego, Oregon,... taking our Half Moon Bay grandkids to Disneyland in August,...proudly attending our grandson s Eagle Scout Award Ceremony, and attending our granddaughter s first High School game on the Cheerlea-ding Squad in North Carolina in September. Fun, Fun, Fun! Alice Anderson reports, San Diego, here I come for the Fourth of July holiday, to spend with a variety of family members. Ethel and Fritz Schmidt are planning a working vacation at Tulelake for a few days to help put on a new roof and paint the duck shack. Then on to Diamond Lake for about a week of fishing. with son Peter. Two Pilgrim families of three generations each traveled to Costa Rica with the Shasta High School Choir Concert Tour in June. Mary Forbes, her daughter Kathy Draper, and granddaughter Danna Draper were in the group as well as Donna Nelson, her daughter Karina Lapp, and grandson Daniel. There were 65 people on two buses, 14 of them adults and the rest students. It was a fine group of great teenagers who sang beautifully in several planned concerts. Costa Rican choirs joined them for parts of two of the concerts which made for very memorable occasions! Reva Taylor is heading to Washington state next week to visit family. She will see her sister and her husband, as well as nieces and nephews and their spouses. She will be back toward the end of July. Thanks to all who supported Michael Eby at his Performing Arts Society benefit farewell concert at All Saints Episcopal Church. Generous funds raised were greatly appreciated by Michael, his mom Sheri, and me. He s now attending Meadowmount School of Music in Upper New York State near Lake Champlain and will go on to Manhattan School of Music in New York City continuing violin studies at college there in August. Meanwhile, we will be growing and harvesting vegetables to share; going to mountains and lakes to cool off. Vera Neal From the UCC.org Independence Day 7/4/2011 UCC military chaplains have found an old way to invite U.S. soldiers into a safe and informal place where they can receive spiritual care and good coffee. Congregations and individuals can support the Coffee House Ministry and simultaneously participate in the UCC Coffee Project by sending Equal Exchange Coffee to the military chaplains in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait. Thanks to you, now 125 chaplains are able to participate. Coffee may be an unlikely ally of the Gospel, yet in the hands of a chaplain it can enable meaningful ministry addressing an individual s normal reactions to extreme situations, allowing them to return to us as healthy functional human beings capable of loving and caring for others and themselves. By offering a place to come and relax, the Coffee House and Café Ministries provide our military chaplains a place to establish rapport with and minister to the needs of our sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, husbands and wives our troops. In these safe spaces soldiers come to talk and develop perspective on their experiences in war. July 2011 Pilgrim s Progress 3

Says several members of Church willing to work with her on those evenings, allowing everyone to enjoy fellowship hour after services & make it more convenient to keep track of income. V. No other business before Council & meeting adjourned. Diane Langan, Clerk VEGETARIAN POTLUCK There is the story of a pastor who got up one Sunday and announced to his congregation: I have good news and bad news. The good news is, we have enough money to pay for our new building program. The bad news is, it s still out there in your pockets. While driving in Pennsylvania, a family caught up to an Amish carriage. The owner of the carriage obviously had a sense of humor, because attached to the back of the carriage was a hand printed sign... Energy efficient vehicle: Runs on oats and grass. Caution: Do not step in exhaust. The next Vegetarian Potluck will be held at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, July 16, in the Fellowship Hall. It is Summer Time and what is more abundant than the wonderful versatile zuchinni? Bring a zuchinni dish to share-- stuffed, veggie medley, bread, muffins, cake, you name it--however you especially enjoy making the most of it. Remember to bring the recipe and your own table service and beverage. REMINDER Many different groups are now using our church kitchen. In the past, it has been pretty much assumed that anything left in the freezer is available for Sunday morning fellowship. This is no longer necessarily true; therefore, it is especially important that all food left in the refrigerator, the freezer or on the counter be marked with the event and date for which it is to be used. Problems have arisen when food meant for one event was used at another. We will all have to work to retrain ourselves to use that sticky note or a black marking pen. Call me at if you have any questions. Y all come now! Alice 4 Pilgrim s Progress July 2011

5 SERVING (Congregational Care) June 19 was a full day at Pilgrim Congregational when we celebrated Fathers Day with our traditional ice cream social followed by a Service of Remembrance and reception for Julie Marchand, who passed away on May 31. We each have our own special memories of Julie, but none of us will easily forget her spontaneous dancing with her colorful scarves waving about. The service culminated with her signature song, The Great Storm Is Over, performed by Bruce Webb and Dick and Nadine Sorensen. To complete the ending, Megan and Lotte danced before the assembled group, pulling others around them into the dance. Her closest friends envision Julie now, dancing in the Great Beyond with her deceased son Gabe. If any of you missed reading her obituary in the Record Searchlight, Thursday, June 16, be sure to look it up on line. Written by her daughter Karina, it captures the essence of Julie, as do the numerous loving messages in her online guest book. Co-Cordinators, Alice Anderson, Diane Hepburn Dear Fellow Pilgrims, Thank you for your prayers and cards. I went to Seton Medical Center for a 2nd opinion and will have surgery there on July 20th. I will have two vertebrae fused, some bone removed and rods, pins and screws put in. Please pray for a successful operation and recovery. God bless, Deanie Coon Your Pastoral Relations Committee composed of Alice Anderson (chair), Bryan Brahms, Sue Crandell, John Crowe, Marlene Hurley, Paula Kahler, Nicole Lapp, Peggie Linville, Ann Muir and Milt Schultz have been meeting monthly to explore ways to strengthen our church. We have been reading and discussing books by Peter Steinke who writes about healthy congregations and good congregational leadership. We are inspired and encouraged by our time together studying these books. The Pastoral Relations Committee also worked with the Worship CoCos and the Fellowship Committee to prepare for the Installation Service and Anniversary of Ordination Celebration of our Rev. Dr. Ann Muir on June 5, We wish to thank all who helped with those events. What a great day it was in the life of Pilgrim Congregational Church! Worship Report Financial Report All totals are taken from the monthly financial reports submitted by Lu Trullinger, Treasurer and Cynthia Turbin, Financial Secretary for May 31 st, General Fund $ 6, Restricted Accounts $ 5, Building Fund $26, Reserve Account $20,323 Income, year to date $67,796 Expenses, year to date $67,014 As you can see from the above numbers, we have used the budget surplus we had at the beginning of the year. Keeping your pledges up to date during the summer is really important. Some people have solved that problem by having their bank or credit union make an automatic payment to Pilgrim Church each month. Co-Co s Judy Salter & Bill Justice Our summer schedule is underway. Services will remain at 10:00 am Sunday mornings. With the choir on leave for the summer, there are still openings in August for special music or readings that will enrich our worship experience. Contact one of us or Sheri Curtis or Nancy Milton to volunteer. As worship co-cos, we will continue to encourage new ways of experiencing and expressing our worship as we take seriously the journey NCNCUCC is undertaking. We want not only to keep Christianity alive but enrich and expand our Christian experience. If you have ideas to share to help us in this process, please contact us. So let s keep cost of electricity in mind & check one last time before exiting a room to be sure lights are turned off. Your gifts of food, cards, visits, and time spent caring for her were above and beyond anything that we could have asked for. Together, you helped each of us through a most difficult time. Our most sincere thank you, Ivan, Karina, Natasha and Ed CLANCY NEEDS SOMEONE TO LOVE Clancy is Don s Siamese cat, and for two years they were almost constant companions, both giving and receiving love and affection. Now, sadly, Don is gone, and Clancy no longer gets the attention that he so craves. He has a lot of love to give but, because I m either away, outside or busy elsewhere he has no one to share that love with. He s a sweet and beautiful guy and deserves a friend who can give him more attention than I. If you or someone you know would like a loving companion, please call me at Thanks.
