Please send articles to: admin@kofc4849.net Grand Knight Line Brothers and Families: Today, as at our founding, the family stands at the core of the ' beliefs and ideals as a Catholic, family, fraternal service organization. In celebrating families, the Knights of Columbus honors its long history of putting the welfare and importance of the family first and foremost. This month we celebrate Family Week, as a special opportunity for our Council to emphasize the importance of the family and to unite Knights and Squires with their families and the community at large. Throughout the coming year, our council must work to strengthen families by encouraging wholesome home life by providing opportunities for families to make time to enjoy each other s company, to talk, to promote volunteerism and to be active together. Volunteering brings members and families together for quality time while they make a difference and create positive memories. Helping those who are less fortunate can also add perspective to our lives. On August 3rd the Council will conduct another roadside cleanup of Orchard Road; On August 4 th we will have our Council picnic and on August 11 th members are invited to attend a baseball game at the Kane County Cougars. These programs should be fun and enjoyable for all, but also meaningful in their message. Our celebration of the family shouldn t be a private matter so, invite nonmembers prospects and friends, to show that families are the backbone of our Council, our community and our Order. Remember, every event is an opportunity for recruitment. Please plan to attend one or all of our Council s events in order to unite in fraternal interdependence, sharing and respect for each other. 3 Deacon s Beacon Dear Brother Knights, The following is a column written for our Church Bulletin in August, 2006; and of course, still relevant: Make my day! Yes, that s a statement used by Clint Eastwood in one of his films and it s one I feel compelled to use today, but not in the negative way he used it. I use it in a very positive way because someone who was at the 9:30 A.M. Mass on July 30 th shared with me that they, husband and wife, had begun reading a chapter of Proverbs each day beginning August 1st. Hearing that made my day! And for those not aware of what I m alluding to, it goes like this: At the 9:30 and 11:00 A.M. Masses on July 30 th, I suggested we read one chapter of Proverbs each day beginning August 1 st, and since there are thirty-one days in August and thirty-one chapters, we will be able to read the entire Book of Proverbs by the end of the month. When I heard someone was actually responding to what was suggested, I felt much like a parent or teacher whose promptings were being followed and it was a response I appreciated hearing. May the Holy Spirit help us to grow in wisdom and understanding as we reflect on His promptings through the Book of Proverbs. God bless you. 4 Membership News The.Father Wants You. campaign should be held at least once a year and preferably twice a year. This is how the.father Wants You. recruitment campaign works: 1.Acquire a parish membership roster from each parish. 2.Build a team of five to six members from the council for each parish. These Knights of Columbus members should be very active in the parish and know a lot of the parishioners. 3.Set up meeting with these members to examine parish roster. Give each member a hi-liter and ask him to hi-lite those parishioners that he knows and would recommend for membership in the. 4.When each member on the team has examined the master list of parishioners, create a new list of all the recommended prospects for each parish. Be sure to include on the list the parishioners name, address, phone number, and wife's name. 5.Take the complete list to the priest and ask him to examine the list and validate each prospect for their practical catholicity. Father may also want to add a few of his own. 6.Get fathers approval on the.father Wants You. invitation letter. 7.Schedule an open house attended by Father, the team, council officers, members, and the prospective member invitees and wives. 8.Send out invitation letters for the August and September campaigns and be sure to enclose current roster of all members of the attending that parish. In April and May send out follow up letters to all those invitees that didn.t attend in August and September with.father Still Wants You. letter. Also in April and May send a.father Wants You. letter to all RCIA new Catholic men and any new parishioners that may have joined the parish since last August or September. 5 Cardinal bellarmine council #4849 Knights of Co1umbus 180 S. Russell Ave Aurora, IL In Service to One. In Service to All Men s cursillo weekend The CURSILLO WEEKEND? During the three days of the Cursillo weekend from Thursday evening to Sunday evening, people from all walks of life grow close to one another. Religious and lay people form a living, working Christian community to gain a deep awareness of the treasures and responsibility of their faith. The goal of the Cursillo weekend is to give those who make it a new understanding of Jesus Christ, the basic Christian truths, and the desire to serve the church. The Cursillo weekend is a blend of seriousness, light heartedness, spiritual exercises, talks and discussions. The teachings of Christ are discussed within an atmosphere of joy and song. There are meditations and talks by priests and laymen, and everyone making the Cursillo weekend is urged to participate by taking notes, discussing, and even by making drawings that illustrate major points. The Cursillo weekend ends at the close of the three days. However, the whole point of the Cursillo movement is that ordinary people can steadily grow in the love and service of God and man for the rest of their lives. Christian growth is not easy, but the Cursillo weekend provides a framework for it, both during the three days and afterwards. In the Post-Cursillo, emphasis is on maintaining a vibrant and growing Christian community, thus springs the apostolic action required to make ours a better world to live in. For many, a Cursillo weekend is a new awakening to a deeper friendship with Christ. Weekend Information For those Cursillistas who would love to come back and serve on a Cursillo weekend the Rockford Diocese holds weekends twice a year, once in the fall and spring for both men and women. All weekends are held at: St. Mary's Parish Community Center 881 North Mongan Drive Oregon, Illinois Next Cursillo Dates: Fall October 17th - 20th We re on the Web: New Semester - Year 5 In the Fall we'll look at the sorrowful and glorious Rosary mysteries, which will give us the opportunity to consider some of the most interesting characters of the Gospel. 7 Squires Circle Under the guidance of Christian Brother Barnabas McDonald ( ), the first Columbian Squires circle was instituted in Membership in the Squires is for Catholic boys between the ages of 10 and 18. Squires' activities are many, varying from spiritual to active service for the Church and community. Each circle elects officer members from their own rank, teaching skills of leadership and responsibility.
