2 THE BUTLER SERVES "A HAPPY BAND OF CHEERFUL GIVERS" By God s design we are a happy band of cheerful givers. Some of the Bible s most familiar words go like this, For God so loved the world that He gave! Giving is what God does and the more we become like Him the more we love what He loves (the world) and the more we do what He does (give). Billy Graham said this, If a person gets his attitude toward money straight, it will help straighten out almost every other area of his life. This is true, and if you will straighten out your attitude toward money, you will find it to be true as well. Think about these LIES THAT BIND : LIE #1 Having more will make me happy. This is one of Satan s greatest lies to motivate people to build up credit card debt and to buy things they don t need. LIE #2 My self worth and net worth are the same. God is more interested in our person than in our purse. People are the same. People you care about and the people who care about you don t care how much stuff you have or don t have. LIE #3 I will impoverish myself and my family if I am generous. The Bible teaches exactly the opposite. Generosity is one of the greatest benefits of Christian financial management. LIE #4 I cannot afford to tithe. You cannot afford not to tithe! Tithing is the means by which God says he will bless the remaining 90 percent in such a way that one can become financially free. LIE #5 I must give until it hurts. Biblical giving does not produce pain or regret. Giving brings the highest joy because we know we are laying up treasure in heaven. Here is an interesting thought from C.S. Lewis on the subject of how much one should give: I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare. In other words, if our expenditure on comforts, luxuries, amusements, etc., is up to the standard common among those with the same income as our own, we are probably giving away too little. If our charities do not at all pinch or hamper us, I should say they are too small. There ought to be things we should like to do and cannot do because our giving excludes them. For many of us the great obstacle to charity (giving) lies not in our luxurious living or desire for more money, but in our fear---fear of insecurity. This must often be recognized as a temptation. (from Mere Christianity) King David said it this way: I will not offer offerings to the Lord my God which cost me nothing. II Samuel 24:24 I thank God for your faithfulness to Him, especially in the matter of giving, which is right at the heart of God and right at the center of all we are as followers of Christ. Robin The Worship Choir and Instrument Ensemble will present Sovereign Lord, a musical proclaiming the risen, conquering King, 9:30 am and 11:00 am Palm Sunday, April 5, The Lord's Supper will also be observed on this special morning in both services.
