1 JULY Runneburg Crosby TX Vacation Bible School 2017 July :45 am - 12:15 pm Kids 4 years-entering 5 th grade VBS Set-Up Days Monday July 10 thru Friday July 1 4 Directors and Workers prepare their rooms Call Regina to volunteer ( ). We need helpers in all areas! Register your children at Sunday, July 16 Buildings will be open after morning worship for final preparations. Everyone meets in the Worship Center at 6:00 pm for prayer. EVERYONE CAN HAVE A PART IN THIS IMPORTANT EVENT! HERE'S HOW: START PRAYING NOW for what God will do during this week. Register your children, grandkids, neighbors! ( or get forms in church office) Come help any time during "Set-Up Days" (July 10-14) Come work during VBS week, even if you can only spare a couple hours. Don't worry: We WILL find a place for you!! Bring snacks for the workers' breakroom. Volunteer to help with Family Night (6:00 pm on July 21). There are over 100 volunteer positions available during the week. From classroom to recreation, snacks to decorations, music to clean-up crew, nursery to crafts there truly is a place for everyone!

2 THE BUTLER SERVES TH YEAR CELEBRATION FOR CROSBY S FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH August 11 th November 19 th, 2017 On August 11 th, we will begin a 100 day, 100 year countdown, building toward our annual Thanks for Giving Banquet on November 19 th. Here are the purposes of such a celebration: HONOR THOSE WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE US. Not a single member of today s First Baptist Church Crosby was a part of the planting of this church long ago. We do well to honor the foresight, the faithfulness, and the sacrifices of the daring souls who stepped out on faith to plant a church one hundred years ago. In my days as a North American missionary, I helped plan for and encourage and support many a church plant that was birthed with great hopes, only to die within the first five years. Starting a Southern Baptist Church in Crosby in 1917 came with no assurances about the future. Those folks who weathered the first ten years or so were God-loving risk takers who were willing to fail, while attempting something great for God. CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF THIS CHURCH. Hundreds and hundreds of lives have been transformed through the hard work of praying, giving, witnessing, preaching, teaching, leading, and going of the members of this church over these one hundred years. It is a good thing to reach a milestone and stop and celebrate what has been accomplished by the Lord through this church family and all its members. First Crosby is a tremendous church that has aimed and continues to aim at the Biblical priorities of carrying the gospel across the street and around the world. We do well to celebrate this! HAVE FUN. This will be a fun and memorable time for you and all of our membership. We will have some past members and pastors, who have since moved away, come back and visit with us, and that is a fun thing. We will have fun videos interviews, fun food, fun fireworks, and much more. It is our declared intention to have fun with this thing. FOCUS ON THE FUTURE. And the future is now. The challenges and joys of reaching people for Christ and making disciples of them is the great constant of First Baptist Church. We have not and will not lose sight of why our church exists, and the discipline and sacrifices needed to fulfill the Great Commission of our Lord Jesus Christ. He has said to us, Go therefore, making disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have taught you, and lo, I am with you always, even unto the ends of the age. Last year we had 374 kids enrolled and 145 workers! That is BIG! Nehemiah Brothers: Ministry of Helpers do small upkeep jobs in the homes of our Single Parents and Senior Adults. Sometimes you need a light bulb changed or a faucet fixed. Contact John ( ) if you need help, or if you have a skill to provide help! Heirs of Adam & Eve! A group of men and women helps our seniors "cultivate and keep" their yards. (Mothers Of Pre-Schoolers), a ministry to connect moms of all ages. All moms are welcome to join us for food, fellowship, mentoring. See front page for more VBS information! in July July 12th is a splash pad play date for moms and kids from 9-11 a.m. at the Newport splash pad. Our July outing just for moms: We will be going to Sagemont Church for a Ladies' Night Out on Monday, July 24th from 6:30-8:30 pm to hear from guest speaker Laurie Cole. Cost is $10, and that includes dinner catered by Chick-Fil-A. Childcare will be provided at our church 5:30-9:30 pm. We will car pool there together. LAURIE COLE As the Founder and President of Priority Ministries, Laurie Cole is dedicated to encouraging women to give God glory and priority. Glorieta Mission Trip August 4-8 We will be providing a VBS child care ministry to children and preschoolers at National Collegiate Week in Glorieta, NM. These youngsters belong to college students and campus ministers from across the nation. Our ministry enables participants to bring their entire families to the conference the largest of its kind in North America. Gorgeous Glorieta is 25 miles northeast of Santa Fe, NM. We still need childcare workers! If you are interested in going as a childcare worker, please contact Josh Seale in the church office as soon as possible!

7 March 25, 1926, Oscar Reifel was called as pastor, and served until June There were some stormy sessions in this period. During his ministry here, the first unit of the education building was erected. On October 17, 1928, twenty people withdrew from the church, and organized Unity Baptist. This congregation built a tabernacle for a meeting house, and on April 7, 1929, called Rev. J. C. McMinn as pastor. He served about fourteen months. Rev. A. K. Peveto became pastor of Crosby First Baptist in July 1930 and served until the end of the year. On January 1, 1931, he became pastor of the Unity Church and served until May 1934, when the two churches were united. (Records are not very clear during this church s existence.) Bro. Peveto served in Crosby for seven years, serving three different churches: the original First Baptist, Unity, and the new consolidated Crosby Baptist. Rev. Reifel served a second time as pastor until May There was a lot of confusion in this period, resulting in poor attendance and few converts. Rev. W. H. Parker was called on July 13, He served only a few months. He preached a straight gospel and was a very fine man. Rev. J. B. Games was called in August He was not in fellowship with the Cooperative Program, and served a short time; he was also the last pastor before the churches united. In a joint conference of the Crosby and Unity Churches on May 10, 1934, with Rev. E. R. Couch moderating, a motion was made by Mrs. Harry Harvey, second by W. S. Harbor, that the two churches merge. The motion carried unanimously, and the new church continued under the name of Crosby Baptist Church. Rev. Peveto was again pastor of the church, serving until August 24, The new church had 90 charter members. Pastor Olan Bean served November 13, 1935, through August 24, Nothing was recorded about the church s activities in this period, except that the former Unity Church building was moved near the Crosby Baptist Church building and made into a parsonage. Rev. Charles Gipson was called in November 1938, but served only a few months. Rev. Henry Smith was called May 10, During his pastorate, the second story was added to the Education Building, and the auditorium was revamped. A baptistry was placed in the building and a classroom was added. A second classroom, and a new floor for the auditorium, came shortly thereafter. Early in 1941, a beautiful inlaid wood pulpit was made by L. Peterson and placed in the auditorium. (This pulpit is still in use in 2017.) During his three years and nine months, Bro. Smith baptized 79 people, and the church received a total of 167 new members. He served faithfully and efficiently until February 1943, when he resigned to become an Army chaplain. Other pastors include Ernest Quick, who was supply pastor February 1943-April He served many Texas churches in this way; Otis Rainer pastored March 1943-October 1944; Robert Williams served November 1944-October Basil Halbert became regular pastor in April 1946 after serving as supply pastor for four months. He was a spiritual leader and served this church well. In his report to the conference in October 1946, there were 66 additions to the church, 31 by baptism. Sunday School had a gain of 99 over the previous year, and Training Union gained 25. Seventy were given for mission work, outside of the many souls won during his ministry. The outstanding accomplishment was the building of the pastor s home, which was completed and dedicated in February This building, called the white house, cost $13,000. Lewis Quarles was called as pastor March 15, He resigned April 30, Rev. L. Kenneth Balthrop accepted the call to Crosby Baptist June 15, During his pastorate, the first spade of dirt for the foundation of the new $78,000 brick building was turned over by Mr. & Mrs. L. Peterson. Right after morning service, Dr. R. A. Springer of the BGCT was the speaker at the ground-breaking. Free barbecue dinners were served on the grounds. Bro. Balthrop was a good man, and all regretted his resignation December 9, There was the best of love and fellowship between the pastor and the membership. Rev. W. Fred Sanderlin was called to be pastor of First Baptist Church February 10, He accepted the call right away.
