1 SEPTEMBER Runneburg Crosby TX SLOAN SHORT-TERM MISSION OFFERING First Baptist Crosby is about taking the Gospel across the street and around the world. Many of you have given sacrificially through the years to help church members who felt God-led to go on mission trips. Short-term trips are part of our ongoing strategy for carrying out the marching orders of our Lord: Go into all the world and preach the Gospel (Mark 16:15). The Short-Term Mission Offering is how we fund short-term mission projects. We receive this offering to help our members who participate in a CHURCH- SPONSORED mission trip. The amount one can receive depends on the availability of funds given through the Sloan Offering and the actual expenses related to the proposed trip. The offering will be received through October 8. As with all special offerings, giving should be above your tithe. Please indicate missions on an offering envelope, and the amount designated for the Sloan Offering. ALL giving listed as missions during these six weeks will go into the Sloan Offering. OUR 2017 GOAL IS $ 17,500 Our prayers go out to everyone in our area who have been affected by Hurricane Harvey. We are so proud of the overwhelming numbers of our congregation who have been helping with rescue, provisions, and repairs. We would like to gently remind you that we missed a Sunday of offerings, and encourage you if you can to give online, or remember to help make it up next Sunday.
2 THE BUTLER SERVES WHERE IS OUR PASTOR? Dianne and I reached our 50 th wedding anniversary back on June 27 th and we did not slow down to celebrate it at that time. That is part of what we are doing right now. By the time you are reading this, we have already spent some time in the Texas Hill country and we are heading out soon to London, England, for a week. When we get back, I will be going to Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks for 10 days while Dianne and Jase Taylor are visiting some friends in Oklahoma. Brothers Josh Seale, Kyle Chapman, and Jeff Holloway will be bringing God s Word to you in our Sunday worship times, in my absence. I am grateful to leave the ministry of the Word in such capable hands. You will be blessed. We have a house sitter taking care of our home and Sister. RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME Often, the blessings God brings our way in life, comes down to God having us in the right place at the right time. I am writing this article on Tuesday afternoon, August 22. Your staff and I just completed our annual calendaring day. I have this awe-inspiring sense of just being in the right place at the right time. Think about it! Here we are in Crosby, Texas, a Houston bedroom community, that is just now really being discovered by many people moving here. This is a great place to live. And First Baptist Church! Wow! What a magnificent fellowship of believers who are unwaveringly focused on carrying the Gospel across the street and around the world. We are doing the right things and in the main, we are doing those right things well. To start with, everything we do is built on the foundation of our Lord Jesus Christ and God s Word, the Bible. Impactful worship, loving fellowship, caring ministry, fruitful discipleship, and intentional evangelism are the hallmarks of our church. Our people worship with energy, excitement, and expectation. Our small-group Bible study leaders are prepared and prayed up and our class members are thoughtful and engaging in our interactive Bible studies. In addition, we have ministry connection points everywhere you look. For instance *UPWARD Basketball and Cheerleading is entering its 14 th year and growing stronger all the while. *FAITH Evangelism is starting our 28 th semester and we have talked, face to face, with more than 15,000 people about where they are in their spiritual pilgrimage. And soon, the 1,000 th person will pray with us to receive Christ as their Lord and Savior. *JOURNEY One on One Discipleship continues to expand as more and more people become disciples, who make disciples, who make disciples. *YOUTH, CHILDREN S, and PRESCHOOL Ministries that are alive and vibrant and filled with noisy, active kids who are coming on our campus to learn about God and have fun doing it. *VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL MINISTRIES (Children and Youth versions) that are done so well that it is amazing. *MEN S AND LADIES AND COLLEGIATE Midweek Bible Studies that just keep on developing and growing and multiplying. *AND THEN THERE S Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS), and our Music Ministries, and our multiple Mission Trips, and Ministry to the Homeless, and Shut-in Meals ministry, and Nehemiah Brothers, and Kid s Hope USA, and First Impressions ministry, and Bereavement ministry, and on and on. I, for one, just enjoy being a part of what God is doing in and through our church. It is fun and rewarding, just being along for the ride of a lifetime. 7 We made some much-needed purchases in 1990: a new van, a lighted sign for the front lawn, new pew cushions and pew Bibles. Bro. Keith Matney resigned to go to FBC Brazoria as Minister of Music and Education. In 1991, our church pledged $200 per month for the next 12 months to Northwood Baptist Church. We are no longer supporting Alston Road Baptist as they have disbanded. Glenda Gilbert resigned as General Secretary. Martha Duck replaced her for a very short time. Janet Kilgore was then hired as Financial Secretary. The search committee continued receiving resumes to fill the positions of Education Minister and Music Minister. FBC called Steve Roath as Minister of Music, reporting in June. He was ordained and licensed for the ministry in September. FBC called Chuck Humbert as Minister of Education and Administration, effective in September. The Spanish mission (Iglesia Bautista de Comunidad) moved from Community Baptist's property to their own in We gave a onetime gift of $3,000 then pledged a monthly gift. Our VBS mission offering also went to Comunidad. Continuing our commitment to missions, we made a donation to University Baptist to purchase medication to send to Mexico. Repairs were begun for the old parsonage ("white house") and renovation of the children's education wing. The Sanctuary, Activities Center, and other areas were painted and remodeled. Russell Ellisor was licensed and ordained to the ministry; he was also endorsed by the church so he could attend Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth. FBC in 1993 became the FM 1942 Mission's Mother Church, so they could be certified as a formal mission and become eligible for benefits from state and association organizations. We also pledged monthly support for the baby church. Three acres of land on Bohemian Hall Road were donated; the 1942 Mission became Harvest Baptist Mission, pastored by Bro. Joe Mangum, Jr. In October, seven new Deacons were ordained: David Haas, John Kilgore, Buddy Wishert, Danny Neuman, Donnie Daniels, Alan Beck, and Ted Marek , FBC elected to underwrite a building loan for Harvest Mission, and we continued support of them as they built their building. Chuck Humbert resigned as minister of Education/Administration. In 1996, we called Russell (Rusty) Ellisor as Associate Pastor in the area of Education and Administration. Stephen Roath resigned as Minister of Music and Senior Adults to do mission work in Colorado. In 1997, FBC began a videotape ministry for shut-ins. Bro. Fritz Wooley was instrumental in the formation of this ministry, and he was faithful to visit those folks and deliver videos. Long-time staff secretary Darla Seals resigned, and was replaced by Karen Vandagriff who reported June 1. On June 15, Rev Dick Lintelman resigned as Pastor to accept the Senior Pastor position at FBC Tomball. He will be greatly missed. In July, Rusty Ellisor was named Interim Pastor. November 2, 1997, Bro. Rusty was called as Senior Pastor of our church. Many building repairs and improvements were made in 1998, including replacement of the old wood front doors with safety glass, and pavers being installed at all exits to the outside. The old parsonage on Wahl Street was sold. New trustees were named: S.L. Henry, Buck Loftin, Jimmy Walker, and Wayne Peterson. In March, the Youth Praise Band and Ministry Team traveled to several churches around Texas to lead in worship and rallies. The high point of the trip was traveling to Piedras Negras, Mexico, and helping with construction of an orphanage for handicapped children. This trip resulted in the church taking on the orphanage as a permanent project; and entering into a strong friendship with Bro. Paulino Esquivel. More trips were planned through the end of the year to build a dormitory and care facility. FBC also adopted Gary and Gloria Sloan under the Adopt-A-Missionary program of the International Mission Board. We will support them with prayer, and publish and mail newsletters as the Sloans make them available to us. On July 12, Rev. Gene H. Talbot, Jr., was called as Associate Pastor/Minister of Music and Senior Adults. Many thanks to Mrs. Lisa Worthen for directing choir rehearsals, and to Bros. Dick Swenson, Carey Camp, and John Worthen for filling in as worship leaders for the past 1½ years. The year of 1999 marked visible beginnings of change to the physical campus. The old Stasney house on Crosby-Dayton Road, as well as the "White House" on Pecan Street, were moved, being given to members. We also acquired a lot on the southwest corner of Runneburg and Crosby-Dayton, to be used for parking. The church approved the three-phase building program. Resource Services Inc (RSI) was contracted to assist in capital stewardship/fund raising. Over $1.8 million were pledged for the building fund over the next three years, beginning this coming January. May 22 was 'Go Day': we canvassed the city to take a survey as part of our effort for "San Jacinto 2000", to ensure the Gospel has been left in every home. We held a 'Heritage Banquet' to honor those who had been members of FBC for 50 years or more. Under the direction of Bro. Gene Talbot, our music ministry expanded to a new level with the formation of an orchestra and a hand bell choir. Different groups of adults and youth made trips to Piedras Negras throughout the year to continue work on Casa Bethesda, the orphanage for handicapped children. Bonnie Kanak joined the staff as director of children's ministries.
