2 First Baptist Church Tipton October 2018 From the Desk of Les the Mess: In the years of , the U. S. Air Force tried to influence the weather for the benefit of our forces. During the Vietnam War, the Air Force seeded the clouds to lengthen the monsoon season. This went on for the 6 years to impede the North Vietnamese from advancing into South Vietnam. This helped stem the tide and turn the war in our favor. That is on the physical side but on the spiritual side, the church was praying, and the Lord intervened. As we look around this time of year, we notice a change is coming in temperatures and nature. The leaves on the trees are changing colors, and with the moisture we have had, this year the colors should be brilliant. The changing of the conditions indicates winter is coming where nature will go into dormancy. Life will still be going on but much of it will be below ground and out of sight. The total opposite should be said of the church. The climate should be warm and inviting. The atmosphere inside the church creates the opportunity for those who attend to witness the life. Life in the church should always be evident and never incognito. Hebrews 10:24-25 says, And let us stimulate one another to love and good deeds, and not forsake the assembling ourselves together, and all the more as we see the day approaching. Jesus told the Jews in Matthew chapter 5, Let your light shine before men so that they will see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven. In this day and time when the world seems to get colder toward each other, justice is vindictive, and division gets wider, the church is in the prime location to make a difference and be a haven for the abused and down-trodden. I am thankful for Tipton FBC because you recognize the hour and the need. You aren t afraid to try something new or different in method to show the climate is different here. Ilan Shamir Appreciate and act October is Pastor (or Clergy) Appreciation Month, reminding church members to thank their hardworking ministry leaders. But the people in the pews though they might lack official church titles also play important roles in doing God s work. Kathy Gray, Carl Ann Ward, Jane Chambers, and Reva Perry Matthew 9:37 Then He said to His Disciples, The harvest truly is plentiful, In User Friendly Churches (Regal Books), researcher George Barna compares the behavior of people in growing vs. stagnant or declining churches. Members of growing churches actively participate in the church s ministry. They did not divorce their faith from their lifestyle; their faith was their lifestyle, Barna writes. They took seriously the classical Reformation doctrine of the priesthood of all believers. By contrast, laypeople in stagnant churches tend to observe rather than participate. They perceived their role as being in the audience in the stands, Barna notes, nodding approvingly in efforts to demonstrate religious behavior as the clergy went through their paces. Appreciate your pastors, but then follow their example by living out your beliefs!

5 OCTOBER CALENDAR s Hello Church Family, Ready or not fall has arrived! The arriving cooler temperatures are always a welcomed change. For the youth fall means even more events! Imagine that, busy teenagers, who would have thought? Football is still going strong while our young ladies are transitioning to basketball after a record Volleyball season. With the fall and cooler weather approaching we know that there are plenty of things to prepare for. Just as we are preparing for upcoming events, my hope is that we are all preparing ourselves as well. This last month the youth have been focusing a lot on the journeys of Paul. After his conversion Paul was a prime example and was always eager to go and share the word, even in less that favorable situations. He knew there would be consequences, but he also knew people needed Jesus, so he stayed prepared. Are we still preparing to be disciples? Many times people stop after becoming a Christian. They learn just enough to save themselves and then stop growing. We have all heard that a goldfish will only grow to a size that its habitat can support. Are we as Christians getting comfortable in our small habitats? Or are we preparing for continual growth? My prayer for the youth and our church is that we do not become comfortable in a small habitat. That we continue preparing to serve others, encourage others, and grow personally with Christ. According to church minutes, the church voted to accept the recommendation of the properties committee on May 6, 1964 to lower the ceiling in the sanctuary to a height of 12 feet and replace the present drop down light fixtures with modern recessed ceiling fixtures. However..the action stirred so much opposition and anger that the matter was tabled for fear of a split in the church and the subject was never brought up again. QUESTION: The average Sunday School attendance for the month of July in 1939 was: (a) 76; (b) 154; (c) 235; (d) 300?
