1 Volume VIII Issue 10 Page 1 October 2018 Loving and Leading People to a Life Changing Relationship with Jesus Christ October 2018 Find Us Online: Today, more than ever, we are aware of the serious nature of mental health issues. If we haven t experienced our own struggles, we certainly known someone who has. What should our response be? How can we walk hand in hand with someone we love? How should and can the church respond to these issues? These are some of the questions we are going to seek to answer the first three Wednesday nights in October (October 3rd, 10th, & 17th) from 6:30 8:00 p.m. led by our own Dr. Nathan Bidlack, Psy.D.. We invite you to join us as we seek to create a sharing and caring community here in Lebanon. To help us plan for attendance, please call the church office, or register online at wscoconline.org.

5 Volume VIII Issue 10 Page 5 October 2018 Butler Springs Christian Camp and Retreat Center As the year starts to wind down, we want to take a few minutes and give an update on how successful the summer was at Butler Springs this year (the following was taken from the camp s August 2018 newsletter written by new full-time staff member Matt James). The summer camp season has officially ended, and we could not be more happy with all that it brought us. Thousands of Campers, hundreds of Faculty, 51 Deans and 13 Summer Staff made it a very special summer to be a part of. A little history about myself at Butler Springs I worked here on the Summer Staff from Those were the best summers of my life growing up and shaped me into having a heart for Kingdom Work! In 2012, my wife and I accepted a Worship Ministry position at a Church in Missouri where we served for the last 6 years. God blessed our time in Missouri and taught us so much while we were there. Then in January of this year (2018), God called us back to Butler Springs to become a part of the full-time staff! After our son was born in May, we moved back to Ohio to begin a new chapter in a what I thought was going to be a very familiar story. To my surprise, when I stepped back on to the property of Butler Springs to work as a full-time staff member, it was like it was first time I had ever seen this place and I was mesmerized at the absolute beauty it had. So much had changed while I was gone. There were new paint colors in the buildings, new zip lines, new worship areas, many new activities and new faces that I got to see for the first time. The place that I had called home for 7 summers changed so much over the 6 years I was gone. As the summer began to unfold though, I noticed not everything had really changed. Everyday campers were still waking up excited for the day. Everyday campers were still racing towards the pool, zip lines, giant swing, high ropes and of course canteen! Everyday campers were still spending time reading their bibles. Everyday campers were still spending time worshiping and praying. And every day campers were still having experiences with Jesus some of them for the first time. Though there was a newness to so much, one thing remained completely true God is in this place! Butler Springs may have changed over the years, but when these things are still happening everyday it will always still be the same place with the same mission.
6 Volume VIII Issue 10 Page 6 October 2018 This is article #4 in our series about The Bible. The Bible is an incredible resource we have as Christians. However, it is more than just a resource, it is the very words of God written for His children to help us navigate life and reveals insights into who He is. As English speakers we are not able to read it in its original language, but thankfully we have access to some estimated 900+ full and partial translations and paraphrases. This allows us to read God s Word in our own language. This is important. Crystal has an aunt who is from Panama. Her native tongue is Spanish. For Christmas one year we wanted to boy her a present that would really speak to her. So, we decided on a book, written in English, that had been translated into Spanish. Crystal s aunt is a great English speaker, but loved the fact, that she could read this popular Christian book in her native tongue. She said it made all the difference to understanding the book. What a blessing it is for us that we can pick up God s Word and understand it in our own language. However, as we learned last month in our look at the King James Version from 1611 A.D. there are lots of variations when it comes to the various translations. So, with an estimated 900+ English translations what makes a good translation? What should we use when selecting a translation to read? Hopefully we will take a stab at answering this question. One of the most important aspects of choosing a translation of the Bible is choosing a faithful translation. So, what do we mean by Faithful? Faithful means being true to the original text of the Greek and Hebrew. But what makes a translation faithful? Is a faithful translation a word for word translation? For example, if the sentenced is structured in Greek verb, adjective, preposition, and noun, does the English translation have to be verb, adjective, preposition, and noun as well? Or can the translators take a phrase in the Greek, and translate it to English in a structure that makes sense in English, and still classify as a faithful translation? A translation of the Bible can be faithful to the original as long as the translators take the original intention of the passage and remain faithful to it, even if it is not a word for word translation. A word for word translation is difficult. That s because idioms and phrases in one language may have no equivalent in another language. So, even the closest word for word translations, like the KJV, the English Standard Version, and New American Standard version, each grab phrases and ideas from time to time to help the text make sense. A phrase for phrase translation, such as the New International Version, allows the translators to take a phrase, and work it out in English in way that makes sense to us English speakers yet is faithful to the intent of the original text. Both of these translation types are good. However, what we must be careful to watch for is translations that omit sections of text. This can be done when the translators omit parts of the text because their theological beliefs do not align with what the text says. We must also watch for Bible translators who have put much effort into interpreting the text based on their theological positions. These two elements do not leave us with a faithful translation. So, the question we all want to know; which translation is best? I simply cannot answer that question. What I can encourage you to do is to ask questions. Read the introductions in a Bible you are about to buy. Most, if not all, give some explanation to their translation process. If you have questions about a translation, come ask me, and I will help steer you through the process. In Christ s Service, Michael October 7 October 14 October 21 October 28 BELIEVE BELIEVE - Faithfulness BELIEVE - Gentleness BELIEVE-- Humility BELIEVE Conclusion As we conclude October we will also end our 30 weeks through the book called BELIEVE. This 30-week series has taken us through three sections asking the questions; how do I think as a Christian, how do we act as Christians, and who are we becoming as Christians? My prayer and hope is that you have taken a different glance this year at what it means to follow Jesus. As we wind down these next few weeks, examine who it is you are becoming as a Christ follower.
