Gen. Omar N. Bradley, (r) CG, 12h Army Group, alk wih Major General Louis A. Craig, CG, 9h nanry Division, during heir visi o Bugenbach, Belgium.-Daed November 8, Honored Gen. Craig When General Craig was honored las year a he luncheon in Washingon one o he speakers was General Wesmoreland. Because o he delav in receiving he repor w~ regre ha we were unable o prin he speech. may be a lile lae bu here is he alk given by Wesy when he salued General Craig. am privileged o be a pary o his proud and happy occasion and congraulae hose who made i possible. As many o you know rom personal experience, he 9h nanry Division o WW was no a lashy uni. was seady, proessional, reliable. pursued sound acics - no razzle-dazzle. was a disciplined division. did no boas; is accomplishmens spoke or hemselves. Awards were passed sparingly on he basis o ruly ousanding perormance. Hence, here was muual conidence up and down he chain o command. The Division exuded inegriy and had a modes pride. was a division wih characer. Why was all his so? Smply. Because o is leadership! A milhary organizaion is uniquely a relecion o is commander - no he reverse. The9h Division was superbly led on he baleields o Norh Arica, Sicily, and Wesern Europe by (2) wo remarkable commanders. will speak o he laer o hese - our honored gues. This genleman was (and sill is) a man o grea moral and inellecual deph. He was a miliary proessional proessional in every sense. Sel-eacing and modes, he spoke soly and poliely o al he never harangued or engaged in pompous exhoraions. Never did he use crude, vulgar or blasphemous language. Digniy and inegriy were his hallmarks. He lead by example! A disciplinarian - yes, bu a man o scrupulous airness and compassion. He made his decisions rapidly based on sound principles and proven acics. He never equivocaed. He was a sensiive oicer bu avoided decisions conrolled by his emoions. Bu he was also human and had his emoional momens. Three come o mind: He was disurbed by he seadily mouning casualies he Division suered during he long weeks in he dismal Hurgen Fores. He was rusraed by he weak leadership rom above during he early days o he Ramagen bridge head. He was disressed ha his Division was resrained on he Elbe River and no allowed o advance ino Berlin. Bu, he acceped his orders rom above and gave hem his wholeheared suppor. He was a maser as a senior adminisraor giving his sa grea lee-way under his clearly announced policies. -.(Coninued on nex page) The Besy Ross House in Philadelphia is "The Birhplace o Old Glory". n his lile Colonial dwelling Besy Ross, seamsress and Pario, siched lhe Firs American Flag.
