Boson Common America s oldes public park, he Boson Common, began as a common grazing ground for sheep and cale. Eccenric Anglican William Blacksone seled on Beacon Hill wih only his books for company in In 1630, Purians from Charlesown joined him o share he area s poable springs, bu by 1635 Blacksone brisled a he increased populaion, sold his propery o he ownspeople of Boson, and moved o roomy Rhode Island o saisfy his reclusive naure. Each household was assessed six shillings for he purchase of he 44 acres of open land; i was held in common by he people and used as a pasure. The Common laer became a rayning field for he miliia and was uilized as a Briish Army camp during he occupaion of Boson. The Common s varied uses also included a place o hang piraes and wiches and publicly pillory criminals. 6 Park ree Church The 217-foo seeple of his church was once he firs landmark ravelers saw when approaching Boson. Is lofy archiecure, designed by Peer Banner, reflecs an even lofier mission of human righs and social jusice. Prison reform began in his church, women s suffrage was srongly suppored here, and some of he firs and mos impassioned proess agains slavery were delivered inside hese hallowed walls. This church was founded in The sie of Park ree Church is known as Brimsone Corner, perhaps because he church building once housed brimsone (a componen of gun power) in is basemen during he War of Or maybe i s because old-school minisers delivered many a hell-fire and brimsone sermon here. America (My Counry Tis of Thee), by Samuel Francis Smih, was firs sung a Park ree Church on July 4, Many imporan organizaions were founded here, including he Boson Branch of he Naional Associaion for he Advancemen of Colored People, Animal Rescue League of Boson, Handel and Haydn Sociey, and Naional Associaion of Evangelicals. An elaboraely embellished obelisk marks he sie of John Hancock s omb. Benjamin Franklin s parens, along wih Revoluionary heroes such as Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, James Ois, all five of he Boson Massacre vicims, and Peer Faneuil are also buried here. There is a discrepancy beween he number of headsones and people buried in he Granary. Alhough here are only 2,345 markers, i is esimaed ha a leas 5,000 people are buried here. Over 400 children have been buried in he Infan s Tomb. Since headsones were expensive i was common o pu several members of one family under one headsone wih one name on i. There may be several possible explanaions why groundskeepers arranged he sones in nea rows: o faciliae mainenance, shape he grounds more ino a mold of he new rendy garden-syle cemeery, or encourage people o sroll in he sie insead of having sheep grazing on he unorganized, old-looking burying ground. 7 King s Chapel & Burying Ground Founded in 1686 as New England s firs Anglican church, King s Chapel offers over 330 years of hisory o experience! Exhibis and programs explore he roles of olerance, religion, and jusice in American hisory. The 1754 sone chapel, designed by archiec Peer Harrison, sands on he same sie as he original 1688 building. The inerior is considered he fines example of Georgian archiecure in Norh America. The church houses he oldes coninuously used American pulpi, insalled over 200 years ago! The belfry holds an 1816 Paul Revere bell ha sill rings oday o summon people o worship. On Evacuaion Day in 1776, he miniser and Loyalis church members of he congregaion fled norh o Canada. The gambrel-roofed building a he corner of School and Washingon rees was he cener of American book publishing in he mid-1800s when Boson was he counry s lierary mecca. From his place, publishers Ticknor and Fields inroduced he world o Henry David Thoreau, Louisa May Alco, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Mark Twain wih grea books like Walden, Lile Women, and he magazine The Alanic Monhly. Several booksores operaed from he firs floor over he 19 h and 20 h cenuries. Saved from demoliion in 1960 by Hisoric Boson Inc., he Old Corner Booksore is Boson s oldes commercial building. 9 Old ae House Buil in 1713, he Old ae House was he sea of Briish colonial power in he Massachuses Bay Colony. The royal Governor and his advisers me in he Council Chamber and served as direc represenaives of he King s rule. In he years prior o he Revoluion, he Old ae House was he cener for passionae debae, as Boson parios including Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and James Ois, Jr. fomened he spiri of rebellion and developed he revoluionary idea of self-governmen. Then and here, John Adams once declared, he child Independence was born. In 1770, direcly ouside he Old ae House, soldiers opened fire on a crowd of unarmed proesers, in he inciden known as he Boson Massacre, immoralized in Paul Revere s incendiary engraving. Faneuil Hall has served as an open forum meeing hall and markeplace for more han 270 years and has coninued o provide a plaform for debae on he mos consequenial issues of he day. 12 USS Consiuion Old Ironsides Launched in Boson in 1797, America s Ship of ae earned her nickname Old Ironsides during he War of 1812 when she fough he Briish frigae HMS Guerriere. During his hisoric bale, cannonballs fired a Consiuion appeared o bounce off, causing a Briish sailor o remark ha her sides were made of iron. In fac, he hull of Consiuion is consruced of a hree-layer wooden sandwich comprised of live oak and whie oak.
