T DOES MAKE A DFFERENCE! 0 by Susan Pinder When we alk abou miseducaion for marriage we are hinking no only abou he misinformaion disseminaed by he media and enerainmen indusries bu also abou many of he misaken effors of our churches. One glaring insance of his is he way he idea of marriage is for happiness has permeaed our churches as well as our culure. s i any wonder ha many of us no o menion he younger generaion were ill-equipped for marriage? Told over and over again ha marriage was for happiness we were no prepared for he ineviable conflics failures disappoinmens and frusraions ha are par of every marriage" How much beer i would have been had we been old ha marriage is for GROWTH-and ha i needed careful skillful nururing. Furhermore wherever here is growh and change here are "growing pains" slch as anxiey ensions and various oher rorms of discom for as we confron new condiions and circumsances. n our churches many of us expec he pasor o counsel couples before he officiaes a heir wedding. We fail o realize ha each one of us has a minisry o surround he couple wih loving suppor. For insance insead of he usual bridal shower wha would i be like if in addiion o any gif we migh wan o give we handed he brideo-be an envelope in which we had wrien he idea or hough ha had helped mos o srenghen' our marriage especially when he going go rough? How much more valuable his shared wisdom would be han any gif cerificae or money! When each of us begins o undersand ha our own marriage. is of muual growh of boh parners hen we will begin o see new possibiliies. We will ake he ime. periodically o have a "healh check" for our marriage jus as we have our periodic physical and denal exams. (We have our auos serviced regularly wihou any sense of disgrace or failure in fac we have a sense of pride in aking good care of our cars. Why can' we have he same sense of pride in having a marial healh checkup once a year?) This is why housands of couples have gone o marriage enrichmen weekend or similar evens during he pas en years. They know hey have a good hing going and hey wan o keep i growing! Such an experience gives he couple he chance o une-up heir communicaions. A famous dralllai.'i once said "The rouble is people are always changing and hey forge o ell each oher!" Nowhere is his more rue han in our familie~. The "daily-ness" of living. ogeher ends o make us ake each oher for graned especially as we g(.' caugh up in he pressures of work parening and communiy life. requires a consan al.erness o be responsive o each oher's changing feelings and deeper needs. Forunaely we have been helped by behavioral scieniss o know ha he skills of communicaion are eachable. There are courses and exercises ha couples can ake which 'help hem become aware of he various mehods and levels of communicaion problem-solving and decision-making. There are ways of handling hones differences of opinion so he conlic becomes a consrucive raher han a desrucive experience. As Paul wroe o he Ephesians we need o learn "o speak he ruh in love" (Eph. 4: 5). Churches Women's Socieies Youh Fellowships and classes of all ages can begin o include in heir programs some of hese ideas and exercises o help all of us deal realisically wih he growh processes in our relaionships as husband and wife parens and children or whaever he relaionship. Our big dream when we go ou of college and go married was o move o Colorado from Florida. My husband Sco was wonderful. He made a rip ou here a monh before we were married and found himself a job checked ou his chances for graduae school and financial aid and found he bes aparmen (for us) in Boulder o be our new home. was as if he had gone and prepared a nes for me. All had o do was follow and live happily. One aspec of our marriage have seen numerous people wonder over is why never seem o worry abou my husband. He may have been gone for hours up in he mounains and i is afer dark or i is in he middle of he day and he should be home from classes bu he is nowhere o be found. Afer many experiences of losing rack of him emporarily have learned ha he always comes back. Even if here had been an acciden know ha he has so much o' live for-we have so much o live forha he would never le go of i fe.. Neiher of us has any grea reason ' o worry. We experience God in our own individual ways on sunny days. Since we do differen hings all day long we have a lo o ell each oher abou a he end of he day. This is rue for many coupies bu i is imporan o ake he ime each day o ell o share o discuss. f one is really ired when one comes home i is grea when he oher undersands. n my case ha means Sco lovingly hrows a blanke over me when collapse on he sofa. Friends a work are forever in awe a he money we have on hand o do wih as we please. The firs year of our marriage we kep careful rack of every penny-where i came from and where i wen. We gained an excellen sense of command over our finances which many people never experience. We are no so meiculous now bu we do consider carefully wheher we need somehing and wheher i is worh he price before we go afer i. Our purchases should definiely make one or boh of us happy-in a real and lasing way. Alhough presenly bring in mos of he money my husband does mos of our family's planning. rus him. He sudies ideas very carefully before making an invesmen-compares prices reads he consumer's repors and benefis from he experiences of ohers. Sco's imaginaion forges far ahead of our aciviies and acual expenses: n he world of dreams one can swifly maneuver hrough (coninued on page 27) n my years of marriage counseling have found ha here are wo Biblical principles of marial communicaion ha are especially imporum. Couple~ who follow hese principle" avoid much marial conflier. 'On he oher hand couples who violae hese principles frequenly "eem o be in a sae of ension or urmoil. The firs principle is SA Y WHAT YOU FEEL AND SAY WHAT YOU WANT. The only alernaive o doing his is hoping ha your spouse somehow will' read your mind. Unforunaely spouses (and oher morals) are nooriously inaccurae a mind reading. Unexpressed needs usually become unme needs and he resul is ofen feelings of frusraion and neglec. Far beer o simply ell your spouse wha you are feeling and waning. The Bible is clear abou he imporance of speaking up in relaionships. "... Speaking he ruh in love we are o grow up in all aspecs ino Him... " (Eph. 4: 5 NASV). is especially imporan o speak up when you are experiencing negaive feelings such as anger. "Sop lying o each oher; ell he ruh for we are pars of each oher and when we lie o each oher we are huring ourselves. f you are angry don' sin by nursing your grudge. Don' le he sun go down wih you sill angry-ge over i quickly; for when you are angry you give a mighy foohold o he devil" (Eph. 4:25-27 TLB). Here are examples of speaking he ruh abou wha one feels and wans. " fell lonely. van you o come home. " " 'm discouraged. need cheering up. " ge frusraed when you leave vour ~hings h'ing around. Please p'... "- pick hem up " As ill he las example saying wha vou are feeling and waning.' v... is paricularly effecive when your spouse is doing somehing ha you don' like. Simply express your feeling response o he negaive behavior and sae wha posiive behavior you desire. n his way you can avoid accllsing your spouse which migh pu hi m on he defensive and calise him o sumble (Rom 4: 3). Our Lord illusraed his firs principle beauifully in he garden of Gehsemane. was His darkes momen and His disciples insead of keeping wach wih Him were sleeping a shor disance away. Jesus could have accused hem: "You lazy disloyal good-for-nohings!" nsead Je~us expressed His feeling response o heir negaive behavior and le hem know wha posiive behavior He desired: "My soul is gri'eved o he poin of deah; remain here and keep wach wih me " (Ma. 26:38 NASV). n refraining from accusing His disciples Jesus avoided pulling hem on he defensive and making His las few hours wih hem srained and unpleasan. Similarly if a wife feels ignored by her husband she could accuse him saying "You are ignoring me." Bu his only would encourage him o defend himself raher han o deal wih he problem. nsead she migh beer say " feel ignored. 'd appreciae i if you would pu down your newspaper and alk wih me." f she uses his second approach saying wha she is feeling and waning she'll be much more likely o ge a posiive response. "SAY WHAT YOU FEEL" Dr. Jay S. Lindsay is a Chrisian psychologis pracicing individual marriage and family counseling in Denver Longmon and Eses Park Colo. He is also a frequen speaker a churches and rereas and is he hos of HFamily Focus" broadcas. Of course he par of he principle involving saying wha you are feeling is no o be 'aken as license for unleashing angry ouburss on your spouse. is never righ o scream " hae you!" f empers. flare ake a "ime ou." Give yourselves a half hour apar o cool down. Wai unil you are able o alk ou your anger in a conrolled and consrucive manner. Remember we are o speak he ruh in love (Eph 4: 5). Also "A good man hinks before he speaks; he evil man pours ou his evil words wihou a hough" (Prov. 5:28 TLB). The second principle is a corollary o he firs. FND OUT WHAT YOUR SPOUSE FEELS AND W ANTS. There are five seps o doing his. Firs observe your spouse's nonverbal communicaion by uning in o his body language and one of voice. Sop look and lisen! s his head hanging? Are his shoulders drooping? Does his hroa sound like i has a lump in i? Second describe iha you are observing. " see your head hanging and shoulders drooping and hear wha sounds like a lump in your hroa. " (coninued on page 27) 6 7

5 / PARENTS-GOD'S FRST TEACHERS! Every Chrisian paren who is earnesy seeking o walk wih he Lord has an urgen ferven prayer for his child which overrides all ohers-"lord may my child be drawn o You!" The beauy of His answer is ha He calls us o be used o accomplish i. The Bible is rich wih guidance for parens bu one very srong guidepos lies a he roos of our Old Tesamen heriage. Deueronomy6:4-9 is one of he mos repeaed and reasured of he Jewish Scripures. "Hear 0 srael: The Lord our God is one Lord; and you shall love he Lord your God wih all your hear and wih all your soul and wih all your migh. And hese words which command you his day shall be upon your hear; and you shall each hem diligenly o your children and shall alk of hem when you si in your house and when you walk by he Wlry and when you lie down and when you rise. And you shall bind hem as a sign upon your hand and hey shall be as fronles beween your eyes. And you shall wrie hem on he door poss of your house and on your gaes. " is wonderful how God's Word provides an ideal parallel beween he siuaion of he Hebrew people a ha ime and ours as Chrisians oday. Once a person acceps Jesus Chris as Lord and Savior of his/her life he becomes grafed ino he line of Abraham and becomes a paraker of he special relaionship wih God which ha allows. Bu we know ha is only he beginning. Like he Hebrew people we have come ou of he "Egyp" of bondage of slavery o sin and oppression and deah bu we are no ye in he Promised Land. n order o learn o rus God compleely we need o pass hrough he wilderness of day-o-day growh and change. God has provided some srong guidelines which we should follow if we wish o reach full mauriy. For parens his passage in Deueronomy provides much food for such growh. 'd like o share some of my personal impressions of i wih you.. "And hese words which command you his day shall be upon your your hear... " We parens need o be firmly rooed in God's Word. We should srive o be well versed in he enire Bible since "all scripure is inspired by God and profiable for eaching for reproof for correcion and for raining in righeousness ha he man of God may be complee equipped for every good work" (2Timohy3:6&7). Being a disciplined suden of he Bible gives God a chance o wrie His ruh and principles upon our hears. "... and you shall each hem diligenly o your children... " "Diligenly" is a srong word. To each in his way is o each earnesly seadily and energeically. No halfhearedness or laxness will do for eaching our lile ones he hings of God. Consisency and enhusiasm are needed o hold he ineres of young minds and hears. There are many religious booksores oday which have excellen books children's Bibles records and oher aids o help during he early years. "... and shall alk of hem whenyou si in your house... " is imporan o have a family devoions ime each day bu we should no limi our alking of he Bible and our Lord only o h~ ime. We should be careful no o be guily of puing. Caherine Buchanan God in a "box"! We should be confessing our love for Him a every oproruruv. Tlere is ime and necessiy enough for ~ommon' words wih lile hear as we go ou ino he world bu wha a joy o be in a home where houghs of he Kingdom of God may be expressed openly! n his way we each our children o recognize he working of God in he life of he family and o no be ashamed of heir Lord. "... and when you walk by he way... " Perhaps we are ableo speak of our Lord a home bu wha abou ouside i? Are we ashamed of our esimony fearful of being hough srange or fanaic? f we are afraid o bear winess o our faih our children will learn o be also. Then here is he ime spen away from our homes in leisure aciviies. 's sad bu rue ha in his complex age few parens spend much ime jus relaxing and enjoying ime wih heir children. Too many young people have urned away from Chrisianiy compleely because hey came o hink i is jus an anisepic or "ivory ower" religion which doesn' really work as a lifesyle. Perhaps his is in par because hey never go really close o anyone who was makihg i work on a full-ime basis-someone whose life was really alive wih joy and peace and fulfillmen. We parens can be his person for our children! akes much of our ime and energy bu no one second of i is ever wased hank God! "... And you shall wrie hem on he door poss of your house and on your gaes. " Like he Hebrew people we are se aside by God as a "peculiar people." Weirdos or oddballs? NO bu differen yes! We are differen because we are looking oward he "Promised Land" of he precious Kingdom our Lord will se up and reign over on his earh. We need o insill in he hears _ of our children a deep longing and love for his coming Kingdom. We need also o hold ou for hem he presen choice of living he "Kingdom way" now. There is no greaer hope we can offer hem han his! 0 n fond memory of Fred and DoTi') Palmer of A (fred Srarion New York + + THE WORLD OF GRANDPARENTS! + + by Barb Snyder + + When was a child my grandparens were always more like playmaes han aduls. 6 The "respecable" people of Jerusalem and he neighboring areas migh well have called John he Bapis a "wild man." He was gaun and unkemp had no concern for cosmeics a soliary soul who appeared suddenly wih a fearless message of denunciaion of prevailing sins of he people. He demanded repenance. Yes hey migh have dismissed him as a menal case or a fanaic wih a srange religious quirk. You will remember ha Jesus laer quoed he remarks of he religious leaders abou John: "He hah a demon." And a he same ime hey were denouncing Jesus as "a winebibber and gluon" because He was no an asceic. However he people who heard he message of John he Bapis could no dismiss him nor his message ha easily. He mesmerized he people drew hem by his very exposure of heir sins-and by his announcemen ha he Kingdom of Heaven was near he Messiah a hand and ha he call o repenance and bapism was o prepare heir hears o receive he Chris. Repenance would remove he obsacles of disobedience and self-will. 0 "Prepare ye he way of he Lord make his pahs sraigh. Every valley shall be filled and every mounain and hill brough low; and he crooked shall be made sraigh and he rough shall be made smooh; and all flesh shall see he salvaion of God. " -Luke 3:4-6.. THE WAY BACK And he people came from far and near as he word of John's minisry spread. They came o hear a message ha was unpalaable and which was ye irresisible and hopeful. For he Kingdom was offered hem. We realize ha because of associaions and aiudes oday his word "repen" has unplea'xul connoaions. is a favorie word of wild-eyed fanaics. We end o associae i wih flashing eyes a shrieking voice and srange personaliies. A sriking sigh around Lakewood and Denver is a car bearing hese words spray-can-pained full lengh of he body: "Repen or Perish-Turn or Burn." The general reacion of he public appears o be ioleran humor for "he obsessions of some people." Perhaps wih our mind-condiioning we would have been inclined o caegorize John he Bapisas a man wih an obsession. We should realize ha where "repenance" is simply made a cachword for some religious groups i ends o creae a sense of guil over "sins" we have no commied a neuroic "guil" ha overwhelms is vicim so ha he canno escape from i-and ha indeed prevens him from facing and dealing wih he acual sins and aiudes ha separae him from God. So how is "repenance" o be def me ' d?. R. Newon Flew has wrien: "By re- Rev. Edgar Wheeler Pasor Denver CO "Turn Jrom your sins... urn o God... Jar he Kingdom oj Heaven is a hand. " -Mahew 3:2 (Living Bible) a reurn o he allegiance due o God. Their convicion was ha moral and religious evils are in heir essence a. falling away from he will of God... Repenance means () ha he sinner recogrizes his sin for wha i is a rebellion agains God. (2) Tha he forsakes i uerly dissociaes himself from i and pus i ou of his hough; he fully resolves in his mind ha he will no do i again. (3) Tha so far as possible. he makes reparaion for his ~ SlS.. Repenance~Being Sorry And Changing Repenance is a deep moral and ehical process a change of hear and will and a urning o God. "Le he wicked forsake his way and he unrigheous man his houghs; and le him reurn uno he Lord and he will have mercy upon him; and o our God for he will abundanly pardon" (saiah 55 :7). The sim- p es definiion is: "Being sorry for your sin and quiing i." Repenance is a recurring heme in he Bible and in Chrisian eaching. And i mus be. The docrine of "accepance" has ofen run amuck empying he gospel of is moral and ehical demands and denying he holiness of he God of grace. This docrine simply declares ha God is so loving ha in His eagerness o accep he sinner He compromises His own holiness and dispenses wih all condiions for receiving His grace and being acceped. Now as in John's ime he hear's preparaion o receive salvai'on is ha of repenance which removes he ob- sacles of disobedience and resisance o God and opens he hear for (lod's work of redempion and renewal. Many people say hai John augh repenance and Jesus laugh faih. Bu noe ha Jesu enered His public minisry on his heme: "Now afer John was pu ill prison Jesus came ino Galilee preaching he gospel of he kingdom of God and saying he ime is fulfilled and he kingdom of God is a hand; re[en ye and believe he gospel" (Mark :4) Peer on he day of Penecos' answered he inql iries of he fcople "vm shall we do?" wih he words "Repen and bel ieve... be bap ized. " Paul a Ephesus declared: "Wih Jews and pagans alike insised on repenance before God and rus in our Lord Jesus." Tha hones facing of one's sin and need and dealing decisively wih i is essenial o saving faih. Repenance deals oo wih facs no heory. John he Bapis insised on "fruis worhy of repenance" raher han claims o a spiriual heriage from he pas ("Children of Abraham" ec.) declaring ha "he axe is laid a he roo of he rees "-Go d goes o he L- roo of he ma er of wha we are in our hear-inen. His words apply as well oday: We are called o urn from he grasping self-cenered maerialisic. aiude.. o become generous canng glvlg. The call of he Lord o repen is in sronges conras o he muliude of voices ha declare ha change is des- peraely needed bu who conclude ha here is no hope of is ever coming ax deadline durin g Lenen seas~ abou. Tha can apply wo ways: honesy a- mong governmen officials and honesy among he ciizenry regarding heir debs o our governmen. Someone hal) suggesed ha perhaps he governmen had is reasons for placing he income violence o no man" neiher accuse ally man falsely; and be conen wih your wages" (Luke3:4).Again he words fi oday: Do we respec he righs of ohers? Do we ake unjus advanage'? Do we lse "power plays" and sraegies o conrol ohers and ge 'ha we wan? L ~. B. Meyers assers ha Chrisians need o face hemselves and ake he road o(repenance: "Much of wha we call Chrisianiy is bu chrisianized heahenism. glazes over coveousness. luxurious self-indulgence compliance wih fashion and worldliness; i admis ino is high places men who hrive on oppression of he poor; i condones he oppression of he naive races he sale of opium and spiris; he shameless raffic in impuriy; i rears he ideals of he world in he place of he changeless cross of he slain Chris wih is divine SOiTOW and blood. Ah we need ha John he Bapis should come wih his sern words abou he axe he winnowing-fan and he fire. Nohing less will avail o prepare he way for a new coming of Chris." However in order o ge he rue picure we mus always associae repenance wih faih. Repenance is no an end or duy by iself. s objec and is hope are he grace of God offering salvaion hrough he forgiving redeeming work of Jesus Chris. The word as used by John he Bapis by Chris and by he aposles carries a brigh noe of hope: "Repen for he kingdom of heaven is a hand." "Repen ha he imes of refreshing may come. " We are well aware ha o acually bring abou a meaningful inner revoluion demands some force beyond ourselves. The will for change is ours bu we canno accomplish ha deep-down change wihou help. And so he demand is accompanied wih he call o have faih. "The (rule) of he Spiri of life has se me free from he mv (rule) of sin and deah" Paul exuls. And we can oo! We can believe ha we have a God who knows he human conflic from he inside whose Son has been baered and bruised by he very hings ha conaminae our lives oday and killed by our subbornness and indifference. And his is a God who goes on loving and calling by whose Spiri we can be urned round and sc free. When was a suden in seminary in New Orleans. a suden reurned from a weekend away and old of rying o ge o Alexandria Louisiana by back roads. Being hopelessly los he sopped o inquire direcions from a farm woman. She made several effors o give direcions and finally gave up saying " don' hink you can ge here from here. " Gein$ There from Here The good news of he gospel is ha we can "ge here from here " when i comes o reurning o God! While here is ha iniial ac of repenance ha occurs wih conversion which brings abou a profound change in he direcion of our lives and our relaionship wih God we are sill human and fallible. 16 Sevenh Day Bapis Minisries and Oureach i ~ i 2 Corinhians 9: 6-8 N V "Remember his: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give wha he has decided in his hear o give no relucanly or under compulsion for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able o make all grace abound o you so ha in all hings a all imes having all ha you need you will abound in every good work." Since all our income and propery comes from God le us reurn a leas a porion of his o our church and denominaion -His organizaion on earh. How are you now and in he fuure repaying your deb o your Maker? Are you planning your gifs o your church denominaion and oher Chrisian agencies as you do your household budge? f you plan your givihg in a sysemaic way your church and denominaion can esablish heir budges so ha heir plans will maerialize. There are several basic mehods (wih many variaions) by which you can plan your giving -curren and fuure. The mos common mehod is ourigh gifs of money. The amoun should be deermined' on he basis of weekly or monhly income and paid regularly-he firs check o be drawn! As income increases he regular gif should also increase. This regular paymen (he ihe) was expeced in he early church. n addiion special offerings were also o be made. Today our special offerings would include appeals from our boards and agencies associaions camp equipmen and buildings and for specific missionary aciviies-naional and inernaional. The secre of planned curren giving is regulariy. n addiion o gifs from wages or salary dividends or ineres on securiies could be assigned o church or denominaion. This ype of gif helps now o mee regular expenses and makes your conribuion a par of he ongoing church. The second ype of planned giving would be he gif of securiies funds or propery o he Memorial Fund wih he income o be paid o he donor during a saed period or unil deah. A which ime he income would rever o he Fund. This secures he principal for he Fund bu allows he donor he use of he income wihou he worries of invesmen. The hird mehod of planned giving assures he church or denominaion of a fuure gif bu allows he donor he full use of he funds. The donor may include he church and/or he denominaion in his will o receive eiher a specific amoun or a proporion of he esae. Thus he donor has he opporuniy o make a posponed gif which he was unable o give during his earning period. These gifs migh be specific securiies propery or life insurance policies.
