March 15h deadline nears for Scholarships THI MEMORIAL FUND Of THI 9TH INfANTRY DIVISION ASSOCIATION Sclolar""p 'nformalon The Memorial Fund of he Ninh Infanry Division Associaion was esablished by he members of he associaion o commemorae he memory of heir comrades who paid he supreme sacrifice in bale. As a par of his fund he associaion esablished a scholarship program. Scholarships are awarded each year o relaives of men ~h~ served in The Ninh Infanry Division. Each scholarship is for one year. ELIGIBILITY'FOR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION A person who wishes o apply for a scholarship mus be relaed o a man who served wih The Ninh Infanry Division. Children of former members of he division will be given firs consideraion, bu children of men killed in comba given firs preference. Applicans who are no children of former members of he division will no be considered unless no child of a former member qualifies. APPLICATION PROCEDURE The fo))owing procedures mus be fouowed by hose wishing o apply for he scholarships: 1. Send a leer of applicaion, wrien in exposiory form, o he chairman of he scholarshipcommiee saing he fo))owing: name, address, age, and sex of he applican; name, address. and occupaion of he applican'~ parens or guardians; he name and address of he secondary school he applican is aending or has aended and graduaed; he name and address of he college he applican expecs o aend; he vocaional goal of he applican; and he name of and degree of relaionship o a former member of he division. The uni and daes of service in he division of he former member mus be included. 2. A ranscrip of he applican's high school record mus be included wih he leer of applicaion. The ranscrip mus include a leas he firs seven semesers of he applican's record. 3. The applican mus have a counselor or principal of he high school. he or she is aending wrie a leer of recommendaion o he chairman of he scholarship commiee. 4. TWO "OLD RELIABLES" The bus in which I found myself had Charles MacDonald, auhor of COMPANY COM MANDER and formerly Co. of I Co. 23rd Inf., 2nd Div. and who is now in he Office of he Chief of Miliary Hisory, in i, as well as General and Mrs. Wesmoreland so while Charley covered he salien feaures we wo "Old Reliables" had a grea ime alking of who was who hen and where hey are oday. We also had a young Briish hisorian whose moher was a Belgian from he viciniy of Elsenborn who is almos encyclopaedic in his knowledge of he evens and personaliies of he Ardennes Offensive. We reraced he pah of Kampfgruppe Peiper and heard again he sory of he 45 FA Obsn. BN and heir subsequen massacre near Malmedy; we alked of Von der Heyde and his surrender in Monschau; we sopped for brief services, a which Genreal Wesmoreland spoke, for he 106h Div. a heir memorial in S. Vih and for he 7h Armored Div. in Vielsalm and all in all had a memorable ~xercise in nosalgia. POTENTIAL ENEMY ISNOFOOL The final reunion dinner or banque wih a menu of Belgian specialies was held in he new Palais des Congress in Liege and was very well done wih represenaives of he ciy, our Briish Allies, he American Miliary Cemeery, a German Hisorian who lives in Monschau and abou one hundred our paricipans. 3 Michigan Doings CHRISTMAS PARTY The Chrismas Pary on December he 9h in Garden Ciy, Mi. was ousanding among he Chaper evens. Our deep graiude o he Commiee of Don Lewis, Elmer Wagner and Floyd Hennessey and all hose who responded o heir appeal and conribued so generously in puing his Pary ogeher. I was a grea combined spiri of hose ha never were able o hos a Chaper even bu have decided o do somehing abou i. Our hanks again, o all of you. Even ou of his fine group here were some ha missed his big Special even. Elmer Wagner received a call earlier in he day ha his broher passed away afer losing a long bale wih cancer. Deep sympahy expressions were sen by he Chaper. Bill and Lucile Andrews couldn' manage ha long journey from Comsock Park wih he weaher so unpredicable and hey were missed. Rodger and Jennie Alsgaard were so much on he go wih heir daugher's wedding only abou a week away. (Our Congraulaions and Bes Wishes o he Newly-weds, Gilber & Marha whom we me in Angola, Ind.) Bob and Mac Cole can only make a Chaper doing when he ges a break from his job and i jus wasn' he case his ime, unforunaely. John and Thelma Obermiller also missed ou because of work. John is appoaching reiremen and Thelma was on her busy schedule a The Michigan House in Bay Ciy. However, here was a fine crowd a he Pary and we were pleased o see quie a few young people having a nice ime wih us. HELPING HAND The fine cooperaion made he even wha i was. Chuck Williams, San Guek and Tom Saunders came down in he afernoon o give he Commiee a helping hand in decoraing he hall and seing up he ables and chairs. Gene Reedy delivered he "Red Pop" early as usual and some of he "Guys" brough somehing for he bar which was appreciaed. San Guek voluneered o do he bar-ending and did a grea ~~. While Chairman, Don LeWIS was in charge of all he arrangemens, i was Helen who was responsible for ha delicious buffe. Some of he "Gals" added o he variey of good food wih heir favorie dishes. Shirley Guek, Lee Hennessey and Doris Williams were among hose who helped in he kichen. All his was really appreciaed.. Our hanks o Gmny McKibbin for encouraging Bob o come o he Pary alhough she was down wih he flu and resriced under docor's care. Bob brough his saxophone along and offered o join he Band for he nigh. His performance was all professional and we were reaed o he sweees music in own. Thanks a million, Bob and Ginny. Billie Marin se his camera down and we winessed ye anoher ' of his. fine alens. He joined Don LeWIS on he band-sand in singing he mos beauiful of all Chrismas Carols, "Silen Nigh". Their rendiion pu us in ha rue Holiday spori.... and here also was ime for laugher. Charloe Fox pu on a one "Gal" show wih her original, "Dance wih he veil". I was all in good fun and she presened he Treasury wih $1.14 in coins ha were ossed her way. Lucky for Chuck, here were no alen scous around. The fellows ook ime o call ha brief bu imporan Meeing o Order. In he excused absence of Pres. John Al Young, who had oher commimens and Vice Presidens, Bill Andrews and Rodger Alsgaard - i was Bob DeSandy who Chaired his Session and he did a very fine job. Firs, Fred Josey presened a complee Financial Saemen on he Michigan-Illinois Angola Ouing. He and Co-Chairman, Bill Andrews, (alhough no presen) were given a round of applause for a job well done. TOGUIDE THE CHAPTEH The Elecions followed and wih some declinaions and addiional nominaions, he following ha ve been chosen o guide he Chaper in 1979: Presiden, Leonard Kowalski: Firs V.P., Hodger Alsgaard: Second V.P., Charles Williams; Treasurer, Bob D'Sandy; Adjuan, Don Lewis; Chaplain, Floyd Hennessey; Secreary, John Bonkowski; Hisorian, Elmer Wagner. For hose ha may be wondering why I'm sill on he job, here is wha happened. Fred Josey offered o accep he nominaion for he Office of Secreary. However, in all honesy he made i clear ha his elecion would also mean he end of he News-Noes because, he had no way of duplicaing all hose copies. In he ligh of his, I've been asked o reconsider my resignaion for anoher year when someone will be able o coninue wih he Noes ha have been sared en years ago. Wih Fred's wihdrawal. I've been eleced for one more erm. Afer he Meeing, he nigh was sill young and he Band played on, for our dancing and lisening pleasure. There were many Guess in he crowd, including Charlie Meadows who came wih Barb and we were pleased o have hem. Charlie, whose wife passed away jus a few monhs ago was Bill's broher. Jim Dawson brough Edih wih him and i had been some ime since we've seen her. Edih hasn' been feeling oo well bu we're glad ha hey came on his occasion o forge heir roubles and we hope ha i was an enjoyable evening for hem.
