1 Vol. X, No. 50 server universiy of nore dome - s. mary's college Tuesday, November 11, 1975 'No consiuional righ o die' Cour rules o keep Quinlan alive MORRISTOWN, N.J. <AP> - A Superior Cour judge ruled Monday ha Kar.. m Anne Quinlan mus be kep alive wih a mechanical life-suppor sysem because "here is no consiuional righ o die." Judge Hober Muir Jr. said he decision on wheher o urn off he respiraor ha has kep he 21-vear-old woman alive since she lapsed ino a coma nearly seven monhs ago mus be lef up o her docors, no he cours or he church or her parens. Joseph Quinlan had made an emoional appeal during a fiveday hearing before Muir ha his daugher be allowed o "die wih digniy." Bu Muir ruled in his 44-page John Benne Shaw alks o a Sherlock Holmes fan who drove all he way from Ohio o hear his lecure. Shaw. a scholar on he subjec of he super sleuh, alked for over an hour concerning Holmes and he aciviies of he many clubs which cener around he ficiious deecive. A subjec which has inrigued many devoees of Mr. Holmes is he quesion of wheher or no he was a drug addic, Shaw said. llolmes regularly ook a mixure of waer wih seven percen eocaine as a relaxan. This was no uncommon in Holmes ime, said Shaw, and addicion was no possible from so small an amoun. Ye, he debae sll carries on in Holmes clubs across he naion. Besides going hrough Holmes' genealogy, Shaw said he maerial covers almos every subjec possible concerning him: Holmes and wine, Holmes and food, Holmes and women and an unsavory subjec among he organizaions, Holmes and sex. Shaw discussed he many pamphles, aricles, papers and books prined concerning Holmes' cases, idiosyncracies and ideas which floa hrough he many orgamzaions formed hroughou he counry o ry o keep alive he legend of Holmes. Shaw personally owns over 35,000 books on Holmes and over 10,000 Sherlock Holmes arifacs, including a ie wih Holmes' famous symbol of a deer salker's ha emblazoned on i. He wore a pin wih he number 221 on his lef lapel, and his cufflinks were buons from an officer's coa of Mr. Wason's old miliary regimen. Shaw has helped form many of hese organizaions and is an acive member of an exclusive club he helped form in New York, ''The Baker Sree Irregulars."This all-male club mees regularly o discuss, among oher hings, he "canon" of he Holmes cul: he 56 shor sories and 4 novels wrien abou he advenures of Holmes. The club, of which Franklin Roosevel was a member, hold heir meeings a symbolic places. A one meeing place, a resauran, he parons had o walk seveneen seps o ge o he door, he same number of seps o Holmes' door on Baker S. An aciviy a h:se meeings is o quiz he oher members of he club by saing a passage from a Holmes sory and requiring he member o sae he conex and he ile of he sory in which he quoe appears. The loser buys a round of drinks for he club, which numbers over one-hundred. The cul of followers does no rely oally on Sherlock Holmes for heir duscussion opics. They ake ime o discuss Holmes' parner, Mr. Wason, and his chief adversary, Mr. Moriary. The Holmes legend has a grea following, according o Mr. Shaw. He saed ha he legend is sill srong. "Even oday," Shaw said, "leuers are received on he average of 10 a week a 221 Baker Sree, addressed o Mr. Sherlock Holmes." opinion ha "he naure, exen and duraion of care is he responsibiliy of he physician. Wha jusificaion is here o remove i from he conrol of he medical profession and place i in he hands of he cours?" He said physicians are bound o prolong life as long as hey can. "There is a duy o coninue I he life-assising apparaus if wihin he reaing physician's opinion i should be done," he judge said. Muir said Quinlan "impressed me as a very sincere, moral, ehical and religious person" and ha he faher "is very obviously anguished over his decision o erminae wha he considers he exraordinary care of his daugher." Quinlan reciprocaed. He old a news conference afer he judge's verdic ha he hough Muir "showed courage in saying he maer belonged wih he physicians and he family. Bu we had been praying for him o show even more courage - o go all he way." Mrs. Quinlan said he legal proceedings were "somehing we fel we mus do morally. We had already done everyhing medically and spiriually. So we had o ake i o he cours." Docors have said Miss Quinlan would die wihin a week if her respiraor were disconneced. Because of he faher's ang- A Nore Dame msh and inner conflic over his daugher's reamen, Muir said Quinlan should no be permied o paricipae in he "day-by-day decisions of <her) fuure care and reamen." He appoined Quinlan as guardian of his daugher's propery bu coninued he appoinmen of aorney Daniel R. Coburn as he young woman's personal guardian o make decisions in medical maers. Coburn is a local aorney who was no previously acquained wih he Quinlan family. Afer Muir's decision was announced, Quinlan aorney Paul Armsrong old reporers ha he family had no decided wheher o appeal he ruling. He added ha a decision would be made "wihin a few days." Quinlan said he was "surprised, in a way," by he judge's ruling and ha he and his wife "were braced bu\ were praying for i o go he oher way." Quinlan's reques for permission o unhook his daugher's respiraor was unprecedened. He asked he cour o name him personal guardian for he express purpose of ordering he respiraor disconneced. Cours generally are asked o acqui people who remove lifesuppor sysems afer a paien's deah, bu his was he firs ime prior cour approval was requesed. A respiraor and oher mechanical devices have kep Miss Quinlan alive in he in ensive care uni of S. Clare's Hospial in Denville since she lapsed ino a coma from an undeermined caus~. Docors have said he coma may have resuled from a combinaion of alcohol and ranquilizers. They said Mls's Quinlan suffers irreversible brain damage and here is no chance for her ever o live a normal life again. Quinlan, 50, and his wife, Julia, say heir daugher would no wan o be kep alive wih no hope of recovery and ha she would choose "deah wih digniy" if she were able o hink or speak. Tesimony during hearings on he case disclosed ha i is common medical pracice o fail o implemen exraordinary means o keep a paien alive, bu i is considered un'accep able o disconinue such means once hey have been sared. Sae Ay. Gen. William F'. Hyland joined he case o argue he sae's responsibiliy o safeguard "he sanciy of life." He said disconnecing Miss Quinlan's respiraor would amoun o homicide because wih he equipmen she is legally and medically alive. The ~uinlans, who describe hemselves as devou Roman Caholics, were suppored by he Church in heir effor. Their pries esified during he hearing ha he Church does no require ha life be susained by exraordinary means in hopeless cases. And if sociey is culurally unfair, hen so are he ess." Dr. Rober L. Williams, professor of psychology from Washingon Universiy in S. Louis aacked he esing of black inelligence las nigh in he Memorial Library Audiorium. "The powers ha be conrol he achievemen es. This ulimaely conrols how blacks ge ino ollege," Williams said o a group of 70 people. "Psychological ess are a spin-off of he power moive in his sociey." Williams saed ha he purpose behind inelligence esing is o prl'dic achievemen. "This is now known as he IQ Tes," he said. "However. his was used by supremiss o negae he black xperience." Williams saed ha he "mushroom heory" is one obsacle used by educaors o limi he ducaional growh of blacks. "You do hree hings o a mushroom," Williams explained. "You keep i in he dark, feed i manure, and hen you wach i grow. Similarly, blacks have been kep in he dark and fed manure in his educaional sysem." "Today, many people don' like he ruh," he coninued. "The Bible says ha 'you shall know he ruh, and he ruh shall se you free.' Bu I say ha he ruh will make you mad as hell abou black educaion." I wen on from here o earn maser's and docor's degrees." "Obviously I knew ha somehing was wrong wih he insrumens of esing," Williams commened. "The problem was ha I had a whie IQ of 82 bu a black IQ of probably 182. Williams explained ha his led him o explore he naure of esing programs for black sudens. He said ha he ess do no "relae o he black experience and demand whie, middle class response." "The commiee will be concerned wih making any furher suggesions on srucural changes in LaForune," lw said. "Also i will examine suden needs and how LaForune could be used o solve hem." One of he provisions in he firs LaForune sudy commiee, formed four years ago, was for he formaion of a conrol board o oversee he operaion and use of he LaForune cener, according o Sue Darin. who will chair he new commiee. The new commiee will serve he same purpose as he original sudy group excep ha many of is duies have been diminished by he Lal<'orune renovaion. A major purpose of he commiee will be o encourage people o use he cener for club aciviies. "The cener has so much poenial and i's no being used," said Cockrell. Cockrell said he cener is used primarily by campus media and sudens who need a place o sudy. "Wl' mus draw people up here," he coninued, "and if here is an aciviiy, hey'll be more likely o go here." Darin poined o he Rahskeller as a possible area in which he eommiee migh do some work. The firs LaForune commiee commiee surfaced in Ocober designed he Rahskeller as a afer he Ombudsman presened a drinking area, o be used in he even ha he Indiana drinking age repor o he Board of Trusees on 1 he saus of LaForune is lowered o 18. renovaion. This recommendaion me wih he usual collecive yawn from he suden body. Along wih he yawn comes a big quesio~ ~ark in he minds?f sudens, faculy and admm1sraors: Wha IS mean by "neural space"? I is very unforunae ha no one really undersands he paricular problem of neural space. I is especially unforunae because he soluion of his problem may go a long way oward improving social life on his campus. Wha is neural space? The COUL repor defined i as areas of he campus where sudens can go and be free from he academic pressure of he classroom and he social pressure of he convenional dae. Bu sep beyond he sociological rheoric and hink: Where can sudens go on his campus simply o relax and alk wih fellow sudens or eachers? The Huddle simply is no equipped for his purpose. There is lile sea_ing room a~d he amosphere is far from conducive o any kmd of ineracion. LaForune is sill no a rue suden cener. The renovaion of he lobby looks impressive, ye has creaed a omb-like amosphere where silence is rarely broken. The COUL repor said of he LaForune renovaion: "Exensive renovaion of LaForune Suden Cener mus be coninued; i is a delusion o consider he presen building one ha serves he sudens' needs." The one area where sudens seem o mee he mos is he second floor lobby of he Library. The 9 p.m. sudy break has become a sandard par of academic life and has ofen raised he argumen ha he library, no LaForune, is he real suden cener. Ye in a classic move o discourage even his naural ineracion, recen weeks have seen chairs removed from he lobby area o reduce he noise of he sudy break. The neural space problem also affecs faculy erry keeney and adminisraors. Where can eachers go afer class o coninue a discussion wih sudens over a cup of coffee? Of he classroom buildings, only Hayes-Healy has any kind of lounge where sudens and eachers can mee informally on "neural" grounds. These lounges should be spread o oher classroom buildings. Perhaps he evenual move of he Music Deparmen from O'Shaughnessy will permi a similar lounge here. If hese recommendaions are o be aken seriously, hen wo hings mus occur. Firs, exising faciliies should be used for more creaive social funcions. The inroducion of he Nazz and Darby's Place las year provided good use of he LaForune Rahskellar. Second, new and inexpensive areas for informal gahering should be se up. The proposals for more neural space range widely in cos from he conversion of curren space for lounges o consrucion of a mall area near LaForune and Nieuwland o renovaion of The Huddle. There is cerainly no lack of ideas for using and developing neural space. Bu prioriy should be given o developing lounges for suden and faculy use in he mos frequened buildings, like he library and he classrooms. The ideal soluion is he ulimae renovaion of The Huddle. In he LaForune renovaion compleed, las year, The Huddle was excluded simply because he money ran ou. To do a good job on renovaion will require an appropriaion oalling several hundred housand dollars, and may involve he suppor of he Board of Trusees. Several op adminisraors are even on record favoring some kind of pub in he Rahskellar if he Indiana legislaure ever lowers he drinking age. The responsibiliy for solving he problem of neural space now falls o he SLC. Hopefully, ha body will rise above is pas immobilism o seriously aemp o improve his aspec of suden social life. Sudens canno remain neural on "neural space" much longer. serious I y f o I ks!!!!!!!!!!'!!!~~~~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I I op1n1on In Your Cour iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii j o h n ph e Ian Over he weekend, he Scholasic Course Evaluaion Bookle for he spring semeser, 1976, was disribued o boh campuses. Several members of he ediorial board and saff of Scholasic, CE or boh fel ha his occasion boh meris and demands a few commens. I was asked o voice hese views. This bookle has been published by Scholasic for approximaely eigh years, a various imes falling also under he auspices of he Observer. I has, in he pas, been funded by Scholasic and is presenly being funded by boh Scholasic and Suden Governmen. The seup of he bookle demands he cooperaion of boh he suden body and he various deparmens. The sudens mus wrie he evaluaions of he courses and gaher and sor he informaion; he deparmens mus supply course descripions. From his sysem here should ideally come he mos accurae descripions, wrien by he professors hemselves, and demanding, criical evaluaions wrien by he sudens. The remainder of he suden body should be able o rely on he evaluaions o give hem a precise idea of he forma and success of a given course. Unforunaely, his siuaion has no exised, much o he derimen of he bookle. The vas majoriy, upwards of 80 or 90 per cen, of he evaluaions in his bookle are weak and useless. Insead of criically analyzing he forma of he class and he effeciveness of he professor, he evaluaions end o be pallid mimises and boring rehashes of wha was already said in he descripions. They wander far from he criical analyses hey were inended o be, and insead, end up being he exac opposie: unqualified opinions. The descripions, while being superior o he evaluaions, sill leave somehing o be desired in numerous cases. Several deparmens refused o cooperae and, as a resul, he descripions for hose deparmens are skechy, incomplee and hurried. In oher words, hey are of no help a all o a suden. Oher descripions fail in an opposie manner; hey end o be verbose and o ramble on. They leave he suden mired in an overabundance of deail. Herein lies he problem wih CE. The bookle is for he use and benefi of he suden, bu i mus also be wrien and produced by sudens. I is a service by and for hemselves. Even in he case of descripions, sudens are responsible for he collecion and arrangemen of hem. I is ulimaely he suden body ha has failed iself. Tremendous amouns of work and effor were pu ino his book by he members of is saff and ediorial board. Long hours were spen gahering he maerial, proofreading and organizing i, geing i yped for producion and in he prodicion iself. This wen o he exreme of several sudens spending he enire USC weekend (40 srai~h hours) puing he bookle ogeher. This caused hem o m1ss no only he game, he concer and oher fesiviies of ha weekend, bu also he necessiies of daily living. However, I would like o poin ou ha we are no complaining abou he amoun of ime ha was pu ino his bookle-i was done willingly. Bu we feel ha he amoun of ime ha we pu in his bookle was no proporional o he amoun of cooperaion we received in gahering he informaion for he bookle. We feel dismayed a he long hours we spen when oher sudens could no even pu in he hour or wo necessary o make he evaluaions and descripions worhwhile. We are forced o ask ourselves why we pu so much effor ino a bookle ha oher people seem o care so lile abou. In effec we are asking for an evaluaion of he CE by he suden body: an evaluaion no only in verbal suppor or condemnaion <We ran a survey las semeser a regisraion which received 1800 responses and showed approximaely 95 per cen of he suden body in favor of he coninuaion of he bookle.) bu more imporanly, in he form of precise and accurae descripions and evaluaions by he sudens. Perhaps we have reached he poin where no one cares enough abou evaluaion of he curricula here, and if ha is he case, he bookle should no longer be published. Bu if here is rue suppor for he bookle, we are asking and demanding physical proof of i. To use a cliche, "he ball is in your cour." Whaever happens o he bookle is now enirely up o he suden body.

8 -----~---~.. 8 he observer Tuesday, November 11, 1975 Keenan ops Pangborn for IH ile... By Ray O'Brien Keenan crushed Pangborn Sunday aferoon 22-0 o ake he Inerhall Fooball Championships. I was he firs ime a Norh Quad eam has won i in over five years. Keenan's awesome defense esablished iself from he firs se of plays. Unable o cross he line of scrimmage in heir firs hree plays, Pangborn was forced o pun. A srong Keenan rush parially blocked he pun and gave he Keenan offense good field posiion a heir own 44 yard line. Pangborn's "Violence Defense" also held in heir firs es. Joe Kern puned he ball43 yards o he Pangborn 8 yard line where Pangborn fumbled. Keenan's Greg Wilkes dove on he ball seing uo Keenan's firs scoring opporuniy: The Keenan offense ook advanage as quaerback John Feeney ossed a 6 yard pass fo spli end Nick Molinaro for he opening score. Pangborn gave he ball righ back on heir nex play as fullback Seve Thomas fumbled and linebacker Pa Concannon recovered a Pangborn's 31 yard line. Keenan behind he power running of Pinky Fahery and Joe Kern, along wih some cosly Pangborn penalies ook i he disance. Fahery hulled his way up he middle for he final hree yards and he ouchdown. Feeney hen flipped o Fahery in he end zone for he 2 poin conversion. This ended he firs quarer and seemed o pu he final blow on Pangborn who jus couldn' recover. Pangborn had a chance o ge back ino he game when a Feeney pass was inerceped and reurned o he 7 yard line. I was sraigh backwards from here as he Keenan defense hrew ' hem back 24 yards in he nex hree plays o he 31 yard line. Kicking specialis Tom Holroyd jus missed a 49 yard field goal aemp as i sailed slighly o he lef. Keenan ook over and ran ou he clock o end he firs half. Pangborn's "Violence Defense" %Observer Spors played well hroughou he firs half. Cosly fumbles and penalies jus pu hem. in a very bad posiion. The Pangborn defense was on1he field for a long ime as Keenan's ball conrol offense ae up he clock. Puner Joe Kern pinned Pangborn deep in heir own erriory he whole game wih his booming puns. I was a remendous Kern pun of 51 yards ino he wind ha led o Keenan's fourh quarer ouchdown. The ball landed on Pangborn's 7 yard line and olled o he wo yard line. Two plays laer Keenan's defense coughed up he ball as Pa Concannon recovered his second fumble of he game. Kern hen dove in from he 1 yard line o add o his heroic performance. Pinky Fahery, who carried he ball over weny imes on he day, scored he wo poin conversion o finish he scoring in he game as Keenan riumphed Pangborn played ough as hey held in here o he final second. Linebacker Gary Hankemer was a brigh spo for Pangborn as he held ogeher he "Violence Defense." Pangborn coach Jeff Jeffers was proud of his eam as he saed: "We didn' play a bad game, we jus played a beer eam. Keenan played by far he bes game any inerhall eam ever played ha I have seen." The Keenan defense really owned he game. The fearsome fivesome consising of Don Biship, Bill Jacobiz, Lou Drago, Paul Riordan, and capain AI Sondej buried anyhing ha came heir way. Pangborn's offense was held o an amazing minus 2 yards in 26 carries. AI Sondej aribued he Pangborn. Parseghian saia, "We had he advanage of waching Pangborn play Wednesday and I saw how heir defense blized a will, so we mixed up our plays a lo and i worked. A number of breaks also helped us." Keena.n became he firs Norh Quad eam in over five years o win he inerhall fooball championship. There are wo hings which haun every ahlee -- injuries and slumps. Defensive ackle Jeff Weson's problems are in he laer area. "I's normal for any kid o ge down on himself when hings aren' going well," defensive line coach Joe Yono explains. The 6-4, 255 pound Rocheser, N.Y., naive cerainly agrees wih his coach! on ha poin. "I wasn' playing aggressively," he sophomore admis. "I wasn' geing off he ball. I was sanding up and reading oo much. You can' afford o do ha as a defensive lineman." Weson cerainly didn' do ha agains Navy. In mos cases, he breakou! from a slump is gradual. Weson's was explosive. "He did an excellen job," sidekick Seve Niehaus says. "He was in on all hose ackles (22), sacked heir runners wice, had a fumble recovery. The inercepion <53 yards for a ouchdown) was jus icing on he cake." And somehing neiher Navy nor Weson every expeced. "I's somehing you dream abou," Weson coninues, "bu you never hink, i will come rue." Bu i did. "When he (Navy puner Seve Dykes l dropped his hand back," Weson reflecs, "everyone was yelling ha i was 11 fake pun. I dropped back ino he middle when I saw Seve, Tom <Lopienskil and Ross <Browner) ge o him. He hrew he ball and forunaely I was in he righ place." "My firs hough was o run," he coninues. "I wasn' even hinking abou a ouchdown unil I saw he endzone wide open. Then I pu he jes on. The guys were all kidding me during Sunday's film hour. Niehaus was saying, 'Look a he Juice go." Srengh has never been a problem for Jeff Weson, alhough here was some quesion before his season abou his weigh. "Las year I played around! 248," Weson reflecs. "This summer I go up o 280 by lifing and eaing. Maybe i was naural growh. I repored a 265, and when Coach Devine saw me, he old me o lose more weigh." Bu an achilles endon injury didn' make ha ask any easier. Sill Weson was ready when he Irish opened a Boson College, bu his play wasn' wha Yono had expeced. "He was doing a lo of lile hings wrong," Yono adds. "His srenghh has always been fine, bu he had o uilize his quickness and.srengh when following hrough wih his blows. He had o work on hem." And while Weson worked, opposing eams worked-- away from Niehaus( and Browner and a Weson and Willie Fry. "Coach Yono old Willie and me ha eams would naurally come
