4 Page 4 THE HOYA Friday, Sepember 14,1979 ediorials Firs. Things Firs n he beginning, he insiuion known as a' universiy was divided ino wo segmens: he : faculy and he sudens. The faculy augh, or performed research, he sudens learned. Evenually, however, he universiy became big b1.).siness, and he faculy members found hey no longer had ime o perform heir scholarly duies and a he same ime collec uiion, handle admissipns, feed and house heir sudens, and manage he universiy's budge compeenlyenough o avoid bankrupcy. n he course of ime, he adminisraion required an increasing amoun of power, and some adminisraors los sigh of he reason why he universiy was founded in he firs place--no as an end in iself, bu as a means of preserving, expounding and furhering human knowledge. Which brings us o he poin of Tuesday's' Main Campus Finance Commiee meeing. Vice Presiden for Academic Affairs and Provos Rev. J. Donald Freeze's allocaion of a $30,000 increase o he admissions deparmen raises wo poins, he. firs of which is procedural. One of he purposes of he MCFC is for sudens and faculy o inpu ino budgeary decisions. The pre-emping of his body, even hough is funcion is purely advisory, underminessuden and faculy paricipaion in he running of he universiy--he reason he commiee was formed in he firs place.. The second poin is wheher Admissions deserves an increase, while academics go wandng for needed funds. There are pleny of academic areas ha could use exra money. Many undergraduae classes are crowded, several graduae programs are facing exincion, faciliies in he library are cramped and inadequae, and he sock of books and periodicals mus be replaced and revised consanly. n he spring ofl978, hen Academic VP Rev. Aloysius Kelley old a group ofsll faculy members ha he universiy has o urn down funding for new programs because of lack of space o house hem. Even he nerculural Cener won' solve all our needs. Equally pressing is he problem of skyrockeing uiion. f qualiy sudens urn Georgeown down because he coss are prohibiive, his will defea he Admissions office's ambiious plans o expand heir recruiing effors. Dean of Admissions Charles Deacon's findings ha higher uiion increases he pool of applicans are abou as credible as he Sovie officials' claim ha censoring American novels a he Moscow Book Fair consiued he highes affirmaion of freedom of speech. Cerainly, he Admissions office performs an imporan funcion. However, universiy budgeeers should bear in mind ha when a universiy has firs rae faculy, faciliies and academic programs, word ges around wihou he adminisraion having o conduc a hard sell adverising campaign. Going Once, Going Twice. Everyone knows you can' buy he Brooklyn Bridge. You can sill buy a Universiy educaion, however. hough some are beer han ohers. Wih he projeced shorage in college-age people, many insiuion of higher learning may feel he need o do some hard selling in his igher marke for applicans. Wih he resources Georgeown has, we should have lile rouble in keeping he qualiy of he classes we arac a heir presen high level. And we should make sure we le everyone know bow good Georgeown is and how four year can enrich one's life. Bu a suble danger exiss--a empaion already being succumbed o by some insiuions of higher learning. n he rush for a par of he dwindling applican pool, a college may feel pressured o pain a picure perhaps a bi rosier han is ruly he case for is poenial cusomers. Wih heir limied experience, high school seniors can be overwhelmed by four color brochures and he smooh words of admissions officers. n many cases a big PR budge an a large admissions saff may replace a solid academic program and a op noch faculy in being able o arac uiion payers. By he ime he suden finds ou he's been had; he ruse will have worked.. Coming Clean A severe shorage of laundry ickes has aken he campus by surprise. The HOY A urges Residence Life o ake sringen measures in combaing his crisis. Firs of au, o preven long lines from forming ouside he laundry rooms as sudens rush hiher in a mad sampede o do heir wash, we have go o insiue some sysem of odd-even raioning. For insance, washers could be used only on odd days, and dryers on even ones. Secondly, we mus sop he deplorable pracice of packe-opping and hoarding by panicky sudens and profieers. A sandard purchase of laundry ickes would be insiued - five or en a a ime, depending on he supply. Of course, excepions could be made for sudens who use he laundry faciliies infrequenly, such as hose wih a monh's supply of clean underwear. Lasly, we simply have o exercise will power and forego some luxuries, such as insering ha exra icke ino he dryer. We will have o endure damp, mildewy wash. Sephen Mull, News Edior Liz Taylor, Ass. 5 Pllge 5 me HOYA Friday, Sepember 14, 1979 Have We Go A Deal For You Times are good. Capialism is prospering, he ciy is in he mids of a consrucion boom, and Riggs banks are sprouing up all over he area like oadsools afer a spring rain. Riggs came o Georgeown hree years ago; replacing he Universiy-run bank which had previously handled sudens' financial needs. A he ime Universiy adminisraors burbled enhusiasically abou he advanages of he swich. So far, however, he only advanage eviden is ha he Adminisraive Affairs people have a graeful source of low-ineres loan money whenever hey wan o buy a new oy -like he Johnson Compuer Sysem which.cools he library o a breezy 85 degrees in he Spliing nfiniives Greg Kisock summer and warms i o a oasy 50 degrees in he winer. By and large, he advanages of having a Riggs on our doorsep have no filered down o he suden body. You sill, for insance, have o walk down o Riggs' Wisconsin and M Sree branch if you wan o open an accoun. Service on campus is as abominably slow as i's ever been. True, his is parly due o he problems beyond Riggs' conrol - he pauciy of cashier windows in he Ryan Adminisraion Building and FDC regulaions which require he eller o shuffle sacks of bills and sare blankly ino space for a leas five minues before moving ono he n,:x cusomer. Riggs, however, exacerbaes he siuaion whh heir policy of requiring cusomers o sign.heir checks in fron of he eller (even he U. U. When Riggs ook over, i was announced ha hey would no honor checks from local banks oher han heir own. Supposedly, he clienele of he banks had wrien a large number of rubber checks during he previous year. However, you don' need a graduae degree in economics o see ha his policy gives Riggs a quasi-monopoly over new accouns from he Georgeown campus. You eiher do business wih Riggs, or resign yourself o walking or driving an inconvenien disance off, campus for every financial ransacion. Recenly, more serious charges have been leveled agains Riggs: redlining, invesmen in repressive regimes such as Souh Africa and Chile. When quesioned by he HOYA, Vice Presiden 'Carer H. Evenually "cube'" ranslaes o ','hank you" and "gym shors" o "Congraulaions"! Similarly, "Crein is he?" means "Wha ime is i?" response?.. "12 axi marmelade." The audience learns he lingo wih he help of an unforunae delivery man (who, incidenally, could pass for Clousseau's cockney counerpar) caugh up in he same "alien" dilemma. n "Dogg's Hamle," he perperaors of his linguisic anarchy are a dishevelled roupe of men clad in schoolboys' uniforms, gahered for an End-of-Term Awards Assembly. The absurdiy doubles as sordid words replace polie ones. (The program's gues speaker, a prim royaly figure, solemnly elaboraes upon such opics' as "spi" and "sink".) The assembly's highligh is a "suden" producion of "Hamle," a sparkling fifeen minue performance which includes all he favorie lines and essenial scenes. This skeleal version is immediaely followed by a fanasically funny wo minue encore hacking he maserpiece o bis. by Phil Druare and Kevin Delaney Hoya Saff Wriers Nick Lowe seems o be sraining for a change of direcion on his Labor of Lus LP bu falls shor. Pushing off his "power-pop" roos (Beales, Raspberries, Hollies), he srives for a conrived "Rockabilly" sound. "Macbeh," a raher palry producion, is only saved by he arrival of a dumpy police commissar, inen upon harrassing he group. Such boarish punch lines as "Poeic jusice.. we ge you ino line even if we have o chop one of your fee off" are perfecly imed. Soppard cleverly inerjecs Shakespeare's lines in appropriae inervals, for example, he officer's naionalisic irade is followed by, "To show an unfel sorrow is an office he false man does easily." Despie consan wiy and criical inerjecions from he inerjecions from he sae, "Macbeh" invies a lull which is evenually broken by he reappearance of our favorie delivery man, who is misaken for Banquo's ghos. Now fluen only in "Dogg", he proceeds o confuse and hen conver he cas o his monosyllabic baner o round off he producion absurdly. The rick ending is ypically Soppard. Alhough he Hoyas ousho heir opponens 20-8, hey were unab)e o score as hey were blanked 1-0. Commening on he game, Co Capain Bill Corbe said, "We can' afford o lose any more games like ha one. The squad needs o win omorrow's game ina decisive manner and wih some help from lady luck, we can do i." Coach Timm Cooney was no dishearened by he loss. " sill hink his year's eam will score he mos goals of any G.U. eam in he las four or five years." Offensively, he Hoyas are led by heir leading scorer of wo years ago, cener forward Marco Figus, who reurns for his senior season afer spending his junior year abroad. Despie nagging injuries, he sill managed o score six goals in his las four games as a sophomore. Figus expecs scoring help from a pair of freshmen - his broher Kiko and Bill Flynn who played his high school socer a Langley High in McLean. This blend of youh and experience is he reason Coach Cooney can afford o be so opimisic. Despie his hope however, here are sill problems Cooney mus solve. Despie he offensive hreas ha he Hoyas possess, he defense needs work. "We have a very inexperienced defense," Cooney commened, "and how i performs will decide he'degree of our success his year." The players ha he soccer menor is depending on are goalie Abme Uzer, who has no collegiae experinece, and freshman sweeper Pee Ziobro. The seadying influence onhis young backfield will be junior co-capain Chas McAleer. "He will have a big role in helping he dfense improve as he season progresses," Cooney commened in an in- ' erview wih he Hoya. The defense will need a grea amoun of help from he midfielders, whom he coach refers o as "srong." Senior Corbe and reurning leerman Eienne dr Conguilliers are solid "middies" and hey can be relied upon o shore up mos defensive errors. Despie having a fine midfield and his mos poen offensive eam in years, Cooney is cauious in making predicons abou he oucome of he season. The reasons behind his season's high expecaions become obvious when one looks a he eam 'ros~r; of he 20 girls presenly on he varsiy eam, 17 are seasoned veerans of one or more semesers of compeiion. Alhough Gerard saw some acion las year as a freshman. Coach Glacken is deeply concerned abou he lack of acual game experience a he quarerback posiion. The offense operaes ou of a wishbone formaion, a demanding sysem which requires def ball handling and precise iming from he quarerback. "Boh of hem have worked hard," he said.
