2 Notes or Songs o Isaiah score Sanord Dole, born in Berkeley, Caliornia in 1955, holds degrees in coosition and conducting rom the San Francisco Conservatory o Music. He was a ounding member Chanticleer, and had long tenures with the San Francisco Syhony Chorus and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra Chorale. A lielong church musician, Sanord has been the Music Director at St. Gregory o Nyssa Eiscoal Church in San Francisco or over 25 years. In addition he directs two community choirs; Palo Alto s Bay Choral Guild, and North Star Vocal Artists, based in Marin County. * * * This Eiscoal Church s Book o Common Prayer, ublished in 199, includes 21 canticles; Biblical excerts that can be read or sung during Morning Prayer and Sunday Eucharist services. Over the years I ve sung these texts countless times. Canticles 9, 10, and 11 in the BCP are called The First, Second, and Third Song o Isaiah. I ind these assages rom the book o Isaiah to be a coelling and comorting art o my siritual lie. While I had long been considering the individual Songs o Isaiah as the basis or a caella anthems it all came together when I realized they would make a satisying set as movements in a cantata-like coosition with orchestral accoaniment. The irst movement, Surely it is God who saves me, sets u a ulsing Bb chord over which the har introduces a reeating iguration. These rhythmic seeds are the basis or the entire movement along with the use o mixed meter, alternating bars o / and /, to generate interest and excitement. The Second Song is a more traditional middle movement; much soter and slower to rovide contrast. It unolds in a languid / or an extended time beore breaking into a aster 6/ middle section. The oening material inally returns and the slow waltz comes to a gentle conclusion. Finally the Third Song, Arise, shine, or your light has come, is all about melding the traditional Biblical text with idioms ound in oular dance music. The double bass and har set u a classic rock and roll groove and everything builds rom there. The inal Glory to the Father urther reerences the oular music o my youth as it is insired by the theme music to the 1960 s television show, Peter Gunn.
