I is highly probably ha some of your members also are eligible for membership in he YRPA, as he crews of hree Yangze River gunboas were capured a Corregidor -, LUZON, OAHU, and MINDANAO. I rode OAHU down from Shanghai inlae N ovember as a "gues navigaor" and was ransferred on arrival in Manila o he wo-mased schooner USS LANIKAI. Her sory is old in my 1973 book (recenly reprined), Cruise of he Lanikai, Inciemen o War. This was a lile plo se up personally by FD R o pro-. vide him wih a casus belli o allow him o legally use US forces in he PI o go o he aid of he Briish in Malaya. This would have consised mosly of our submarines and MacArhUr's bombers. A any rae, he war inervened, and he J aps provided a far more saisfacory incid91 a Pearl. So my lile LANIKAI was recalled and aached o he Inshore Parol, along wih-he gunboas. For several week I parolled under sail off he minefie1ds looking for e~emy Sub periscopes. (Never saw one). My 3-pounder and one each 50-calibre mg and 30-calibre Lewis would scarcely been much of a hrea o he J apanese flee, so I go permission o ry o run for i, leaving Mariveles on 26 December and arriving in Java wo monhs laer, sailing by nigh, lying Illong some palm-fringed island by day, when one was availabl~ My 12 Filipino and 6 US crewmen hus escaped he ne. 5 By JOI Barbara Burfeind U.S. Navy Subic Bay, Philippines - The all, whiehaired genleman sood quiely. His disan gaze looked over he bay waers ino anoher world. He looked, unwillingly, ino he pas, a errors fev.: ohers have known. Fify'fee below he waer level where he looked, abou 150 yards off Alava Pier a Subic Bay, lies he Japanese ship, Oryoku Maru, and almos 400 Americans who wen down wih her. Memories have faded of ha ill-faed journey - excep in he privae agonies of he survivors and he families lef. behind. Lloyd Mills and a few oher survivors reurned here recenly, wih a group o dedi cae a memorial o heir friends and unknown comrades. Family members of some of hose men - a widow, siser, broher and nephew - also came o bring shape o memories of a loved one long los o war. Bu Mills was one of he sl!rvivors. He relaed his sory quiely, concenraing on deails of he evens 39 years ago. Firs capured a Baaan, hen held as a prisoner of war a Cabanauan and on Mindanao for several years, Mills recalled being aken by ruck in Sepember 1944, o Bilibid Prison in Manila. Bilibid was used by he Japanese as a ransi camp and laer a saging pos for prisoners o be aken norh o Japan for use as slave laborers. In December, he Japanese slipped several ships ino Manila Bay o pick up able-bodied POW's which, according o Mills, was "anyone ha could cas a shadow." A his poin in he war, he Japanese were scraping he boom of he barrel. On Dec. 13, more han 1,000 officers, 500 enlised men and 45 civilians - all bu 30 American - were crowded ino hree differen holds on he cabin-ype vessel Oryoku Maru. By his poin of he war he Allies rules boh he sea and sky and American planes bombed and srafed he unmarked convoys, unaware of he American prisoners on board. Mills described some of he condiions aboard he Oryoku Maru for which i was laer chrisened he "hell ship." "We were so jammed ogeher ha we were like sardines in a can. I had a canken of waer - which I didn' drink. Some of he men drank all of heir waer. So, when we go on board, hey had no more waer and wha happened was very hard o describe," Mills said. "I was pracically impossible. Suffocaion due o crowding and he ropical hea, men going compleely crazy - killing each oher or drinking urine. Many in he hold I was in died ha nigh." American planes. firs hi he convoy on Dec. 14, damaging he ship. Beaching he ship o evacuae heir wound~d, he J apanese would no allow he POW's o come ou 'of he holds, hreaening o shoo anyone ha ried. The nex day he ship had anchored in Subic Bay. Bu American planes Memo'rial Shows Horror reurned again and, hiing he bow of he ship, killed several hundred people and se he Oryoku Maru on fire. The POW's were finally allowed ou of he holds and forced o swim ashore a Subic Bay. "I saw i again oday," Mills said, "bu a he ime i seemed much farher. All of us were in poor condiion. Though only some 300 yards offshore, he disance.seemed a long way." AS THE AMERICAN planes recognized he POWs, hey lef wih a wagging of airplane wings, bu reurned laer o sink he Oryoku Maru. '~nd, of-course, as-you eame-in, he Japa nese picked you up," he added. "I remember going up a rail, no oo far, o where here were ennis cours. Abou 1,200 of us were placed and kep here for hree'or four days, I hink," Mills said. The ennis cours were he firs locaion where many of he men received food and waer afer several days wihou. Food consised of one spoonful of raw rice per day. A nearby waer spigo, sill here oday, kep many men alive hrough he ordeal. Crowding was again a problem, wih no space o srech ou /or lie down. The prisoners were surrounded by a chicken wire fence, unproeced from he glaring sun. Reired Cmdr. Arhur Beale sill bears remnans of scars where he was forced o si on his haunches on he cemen during hose long, ho days. Wih he Oryoku Maru desroyed, he group hen began anoher journey o mee oher ranspor ships. Loaded on rucks, he prisoners were aken o he j ail in San Fernando, Pampanga. IT WAS THERE, Beale recalled, ha he Japanese asked for 15 people who physically couldn' coninue he rip o Japan. He wached his friend, Bill Ellio, and ohers leave he j ail, hinking hey would reurn o Manila for medical reamen. He laer learned hose 15 men were beheaded. \ From San Fernando, he prisoners coninued heir rek via overcrowded boxcars o La Union, ransferring o he Enoura Maru and an old freigher, he Brazil Maru. Oryoku Maru survivors, aboard he wo Japanese' ships, would dock six days laer in Takao,. Formosa (Taiwan). as' mos Japanese ranspors did en roue o Japan. They were no luckier his ime, however, han hey were aboard he Oryoku Maru, said Beale, as on Jan. 9, 1954, prisoners could only gasp in horror as American planes suddenly appeared overhead and, in srafing and bombing runs, dove a he Enoura Maru as hey had he Oryoku Maru. Beale, imprisoned on he ship, "jumped ino a pile of bodies bu I was unable o ge my whole body in, so ha my fee go hi," he relaed. The Enoura Maru was badly damaged during he bombing and he prisoners were again ransferred - his ime o he Brazil Maru. The Brazil Maru lef Jan. 13 for Japan. During he voyage he deah oll increased considerably, wih a burial deail hrowing bodies overboard every wo or hree clays, unil on J an. 29, ~ 945, he ship fi nally arrive9 in Moji, Japan. "HAD THE TRIP been longer, I don' hink any of us would have remained alive," Mills said. "When I go here, like many ohers, I couldn' walk. A big Ausralian dockworker ook me off he ship." Mills' more han six-foo frame weighed roughly 80 pounds. Beale and Edward Konik, of he Army's 91s Infanry, 91s Baalion, me as Ii resul of heir shrapnel wounds a he Moji, Japan,. hospial. The pair soon became friends when. hey-discovered hey were boh-from Connecicu.. The hospial faciliies, Beale recalled, consised of a sraw ma, no hea and no aneshesia. In a lile less han wo weeks approximaely 30 of abou 130 prisoners were lef alive following he ship voyage, according o Konik and Beale. "You go o know each oher very well and you kind of helped one anoher," Konik said. "If you go sick, your buddy usually kicked you in he bu o ge you on your fee, o keep you going. If he go sick, you reversed i. Tha's he reason you survived because one ook care of he oher." From he hospial, hey joined many ohers in work camps in Japan, Korea and Manchuria. Konik said hey were evenually liberaed by he Russian army in Hoen, a POW prison camp ouside of Mukden, Manchuria. The Russian army arrived and, following a confronaion by heir capain wih he Japanese commanding officer, he Russians soon made i clear hey were in charge. "Mos of us wen a lile ape when we real ized wha was happening," Konik explained. "I alked o he capain of one of he Russian companies in Hoen and learned he could speak Polish. I spoke fluen Polish, so I asked him, 'I'm hungry, I'd like o go o he own of Mukden,' and 'Could I join your uni?' He said, ~ Sure, why no?' " "We wen o Mukden where he Russians had se up a command pos. I ook ime o evacuae he POWs, so ha i was hree days before he Amencans rounded us up and old us, "All righ, i's ime for you lile rebels o go home,' " Konik explained. The journey home began wih a sopover in China. Wih a mischievious grin Konik'added, "The nurse ha greeed us here, a capain named Ann, ha's all I remember, greeed us wih a case of Canadian Club." Beale remarked ha in he pre-war Navy, sailors could name every ship and class. Bu when he reurned afer hree-and-a-halfyears as'a POW, he couldn' recognize any of hem. "So much echnological advancemen had occurred ha i was unbelievable," Beale said. "Elecronics was a?ally new erm Q me," CHARLES BROWN, hen an Army firs lieuenan, saw his four-yeiu--old son for he firs ime upon his reurn. (Coninued on Page 6) MARCH,

6 (Coninued from Page 5) "When his hing happened, we didn' realize how bad i could be," Brown said. "The older officers and men (he was 35 a he ime) I hink survived beer han he younger men because we had somehing o live for. I had one son and my wife was pregnan when I had lef he Saes. So, i was rough on he wives oo. They were only Qld by he War Deparmen ha we were presumed prisoners of war." Today, i is esimaed ha of he original, 1,619 men aboard he Oryoku Maru, fewer han 200 are alive, according o Brown. "Many of he survivors who recenly visied Subic Bay were in or near he same locaions while POWs, bu few of hem knew one anoher. "Mos of my friends died here," Brown said, "bu so did mos everyone's friends." In he afermah of war, survivors and families have slowly discovered one anoher over he years. William Bryan, a sof-spoken man from Ypsilani, M,ich., had reurned o he Philippines for he firs ime since "I's kind of caharic o come back, see he places again and alk o people ha were here," he said. Bu, Bryan added, "I's no somehing any of us are paricularly pleased wih; being a POW is no a very desirable hing. I's no somehing we're proud of or would alk abou a grea deal." YET THE SURVIVORS agreed ha pe0- ple need o know wha happened. "People should know ha life isn' a bowl of cherries," Mills said. "If you wan freedom, you have o figh for i..l someimes you have o suffer and die for i." The idea of an Oryoku Maru memorial developed from ha senimen. Brown compiled he sory of he Oryoku Maru, which was hen prined and circulaed in he lae '70s and early '80s o raise money for he memorial and locae survivors. On Dec. 15, 1983, he memorial was dedicaed in fron of he Olongap Ciy American Legion headquarers feauring one of he Oryoku Maru's forward guns and wo plaques describing he ordeal so few had lived hrough. "We enjoy life," Mills said. "You'll find mos of us enjoy living more. I hink ha is he resul of our experiences." And perhaps because hey came so close o losing everyhing hese men realize more han mos how much hey really have. Prayer read during memorial dedicaion: "In he srengh of our youh, we were brough hrough he horrors of war... we he living carry on in our bodies he scars of he conflic. We'll remember hose days and our comrades. May he sacrifice of freedom given here never be forgoen. Le his memorial serve o remind coming generaions of he horrors of war and he marvel of he human spiri. Gran au naions he wisdom o avoid war. To our dead comrades - farewel~ good friends. 7b our living ranks - carry on, good friends."., 6-THEQUAN 1016 Souh 4h S. Springfield, MA: NEW TECHNIQUE A new diagnosic echnique ha could eliminae he need for coronary bypass surgery for housands of paiens has been developed by cardiologiss a he Ann Arbor, Mich., VA Medical Cener and he Universiy of Michigan Medical School. The new echnique, which is described in he January issue of he American Hear Journal, enables docors o obain such precise measuremens of he hear's blood supply ha hey can deermine immediaely wheher he paien will require bypass surgery or wheher he blocked areries can be reopened by he simpler, non-surgical procedure known as balloon angioplasy. Rober A. Vogel, M.D., chief cardiologis a he VA Medical Cener and head of he research eam, said abou 200,000 persons undergo coronary bypass surgery each year. He said ha abou percen of hese paiens migh benefi from he simpler procedure, in which a balloon is inflaed inside he arery o spread he arery walls and resore blood flow o he hear. In addiion o being far less cosly han bypass surgery, angioplasy is also much less raumaic. Resuls are immediae, and recuperaion is measured in days raher han weeks. Anoher advanage is ha if angioplasy is he reamen of choice, i can be performed immediaely: he balloon is simply insered hrough he caheer already in place for he diagnosic procedure. The new diagnosic echnique uses he compuer imaging echnique developed for bringing back picures from space o enhance X-ray movies of he blood flow in paiens wih coronary arery disease. Because compuer enhancemen brings ou deails no visible o he naked eye, Dr. Vogel said, "We can measure he flow of blood o he paien's hear and deermine insanly, arery by arery, wheher he obsrucions are significan: causing a paien's ches pain or oher sympoms. "Wih hese measuremens, we can ailor herapy o each paien cased on he condiion of his areries," he added. The sysem is currenly in rouine use a he VA Medical Cener and is being insalled in Universiy of Michigan hospials as well. pear Joe, I jus reurned from he Philippines and he Dedicaion of he "Oryoku Maru Memorial." 12 Chaplain Gives Heroic Service in W.W. II by Glen C Shaffer '32 ' Afer graduaion from Oerbein College in 1934, Ed Nagel pursued higher educaion a Ohio Sae Universiy, Bonebrake Theological Seminary, and Yale Universiy. His objecive was o prepare for a career as a mis' sionary. Wih an M.A. from Ohio Sae, a heological degree from Bonebrake, and sudies in psychology and religious educaion a Yale, Ed Nagel fel ready. So did Leora Lauzenheiser, a member of he church Ed belonged o in Canon, Ohio. Leora was a graduae of Ken Sae Universiy. They were married Augus 29, 1937, and prepared o serve as missionaries in he Philippines. The couple arrived in he Philippines in 1939 and were assigned o Lubuagan, Kalinga, a mounain saion. The N agels soon became very popular in boh he lowlands and he mounain missions. When World War II broke ou, Ed and Leora were eaching in he high school academy, as well as doing oureach missions. Since he area across he sree from he academy was a saging area for he Unied Saes Army, Ed fel a responsibiliy for hese men and consequenly was invied by he commander o be a chaplain. The ceremony was held in he Nagel home and he was erroneously commissioned a second lieuenan, alhough chaplains usually ener he service as firs lieuenans or capains. His new commission gave Rev. Ed N agel he unique saus as he only chaplain in he hisory of he Unied Saes miliary o serve as a second lieuenan. Afer he Japanese landed in he Philippines, here were many mounain campaigns before Ed was capured by he Japanese and sen o he infamous POW camp a Cabanauan. In he meanime, Leora was inerned a Camp Holmes and evenually in he ancien Spanish prison a Billibid in Manila. Leora me Naalie Crouer and alked o her many imes abou he numerous noes which were o be condensed ino he book Forbidden Diary. Forbidden Diary was he second book in he famous "Women's Diaries" series. While a Camp Holmes, Leora received a message hrough he myserious underground from Ed o mee him in Manila afer he war so ha hey could coninue heir work. Ed had no los his zeal, objecives, and moivaion despie he beaings, sarvaion,. ~eahs, and holocaus of Cabanauan. On he conrary, in Cabanauan Ed pursued his dynamic minisry o he many prisoners of war. ' H~ shared his minue food and waer raion wih hose in need, some in fac in greaer srengh han Ed. He was always indefaigably helping, srenghening, praying wih, comforing he men, consanly pouring ou his srengh o srenghen ohers. In Ocober, 1944, Ed was moved o Billibid Prison in Manila for shipmen o Japan. 12-THEQUAN Alhough he had been spared he "Deah March," he was abou o suffer a more horrible experience on he so-called "Hell Ships" or "Deah Ships." On December 13, 1944, 1,619 prisoners were forced ino he hold of he Oryoko Maru, a Japanese ranspor ship. Wihin wo days, 300 men died from hea, suffocaion, lack of food and waer. The ship was bombed arid began o urn over, a which poin he Americans broke ou of he hold and sared p swim for shore. The Japanese machine-gunned hem from he deck of he sinking ship. Ed received a bulle in his righ hip bu kep on swimming. The 1,320 men who made i o shore were ransferred by land o Lingayen Gulf 'for shipmen on Chrismas Day o Japan. Some prisoners were pu in he hold of he Enoura Maru. Ohers, including Rev. Nagel, were pu in he hold of he Brazil Maru. These ships arrived in Formosa on December 31,1944, bu he Enoura Maru was bombed and sunk. So many prisoners had died on boh ships ha here was space enough on he Brazil Maru for he J:"emaining 975 prisoners on he final leg of heir journey o Japan. By he ime he Brazil Maru docked in Moji, Japan, here were only abou 400 men alive. Ed Nagel was one of he living. Bu he harsh winer cold, he absence of clohing and he unheaed hospial caused he pneumonia which claimed his life on February 2, Of he 16 chaplains on he Oryoko Maru only four arrived in Japan where boh Russ Brown and Ed Nagel died. Chaplain Rober Taylor and Faher Duffy were o survive. Chaplain Taylor old me he held Rev. Nagel's funeral service in he Moji hospial The chaplain had also winessed Ed's arrival, in Cabanauan wearing second lieuenan bars. He old me he Chaplain (CoL) Alfred Oliver, he senior chaplain in he Philippines, immediaely removed Ed's gold bars and replaced hem wih he silver bars of a firs lieuenan. Miraculously, some of Rev. Nagel's'effecs, including his New Tesamen" survived. This was reurned by he Japanese hrough American 'auhoriies o Leora. Very small handprined noes show in he Bible, such as "five easpoons of rice per man; one easpoon offish; eigh G.1. spoons of waer." On some days, he noe read, "No waer, no food oday." In one place he wroe "The Japanese ell us hey don' know how o cook." I'm sure Ed agreed. The sory of Ed Nagel was firs old o me by Chaplain Rober R. Taylor who replaced me a Training Command Headquarers in Chaplain Taylor's affecion and respec for Rev. Nagel were expressed when he came o Oerbein College in 1959 as he baccalaureae speaker. A ha ime, Chaplain Taylor was he chief of Air Force chaplains wih he rank of major general I me several survivors of he holocaus afer he war who frankly old me if i hadn' been for Rev. N agel hey would no have made i. One of hese was he commander of our air base in Preswick, Scoland, who old me he sory wih ears sreaming down his face. Rev. Nagel's name appears in hree memorials. Baelle Rounda Memorial Chapel a Yale, he Chaplain's Chapel in Washingon, D.C., and he Memorial Sadium, Oerbein College. His picure appears in Of Rice and Men by Major C.E. Chunn, he firs book afer he war abou he Philippine holocaus. In fac, Ed had been provided a smuggled camera o ake he picures of he chaplains in he Cabanauan POW Camp. I was a risky business, bu he ook he picures and hey survived he rip o Japan. A ribue o Rev. Nagel appears in he Eas Ohio Conference E.U.B. ChurchJoumal of 1946: "As we look back over he period of he war we find ha he heroes were no only hose, who manned he guns, or piloed he planes or drove he anks. The missionary and his work sands ou in bold conras o he armies of desrucion which have marched across he counries of he world. The name of Rev. Edward Nagel will be inscribed upon he able of ime and eerniy as a hero, as one who was rue o his vow o God and he church. I can be said ha he was 'faihful o he end,' and ha he possessed he love which makes a man willing o 'give his life for his friend.' 14 COL Eugene C. Jacobs, USA, Re. In 1957, while preparing for a hisorical pagean o celebrae he Cenennial of he old Pos Chapel, he "Cenurian," a For Monroe, Virginia, I was o learn from one of he "Old Timers" abou he firs use of he bugle call "Taps" a a miliary funeral The pagean was scheduled for May 3rd, The "Old Timer" was Miss Mabel Tidball of Charleson, Souh Carolina. Miss Mabel was he daugher of General John C. Tidball, a former commanding officer of he old Forress Monroe, where she was born in 1875, where she had lived as a child, and where she had learned o read from he sained glass windows of he chapel Our memorial commiee believed her presence would do much o bring back o life he hisory of he old forress. Unforunaely, Miss Mabel, hen in her 83rd year, could no accep our inviaion bu she had a reques o make. "Would you please pay Taps in memory of hose who had 'passed on' during he pas cenury?" Our commiee approved, and he Army bandmaser arranged for he enire Army band o sound Taps, a ruly remarkable rendiion. In corresponding wih Miss Mabel afer he pagean, I was o learn ha her faher, hen a capain, had been he firs individual o use Taps a a miliary funeral, in July of 1862, on he balefield near Harrison's Landing on he James River in Virginia. I began o wonder abou Taps; where had i come from? I wroe o he Headquarers of he US Army Band in Washingon and everyhing Miss Mabel had old me was verified. Since ha ime, I have been able o piece ogeher he background of Taps, he sory of is composiion, and is adopion hroughou he Army. The composer was Colonel Daniel Buerfield, who was born in Uica, New York, on Ocober 3,1831, and graduaed from Union College, Schenecady, in When For Sumer, Souh Carolina, fell on April 14, 1861, Buerfield was he officer in command of he 12h New York Voluneers (Infanry), bu happened o be in Washingon on business. Cassius Clay, hen Miniser o Russia, hurriedly organized 300 prominen ciizens in Washingon o defend he Capial Ciy agains possible aack by he "Rebels." Buerfield became he.firs Sergean of his group, called "Clay's Guards." In early 1862, Colonel Buerfield and his 12h New York Miliia became a par of he newly creaed Army of he Poomac (A.O.P.), which consised of 100,000 men and was under he command of General George B. McClellan. Buerfield shorly became' he, general in command of he Third Brigade of Infanry - his own 12h New York Miliia and he 83rd Pennsylvania Voluneers. On March 17,1862, he A.o.P. boarded a floilla consising of 113 seamers, 118 schooners, and 88 barges, which depared for Forress Monroe, Virginia, he primary base of operaions in a campaign o capure Richmond, he Confeder~e capial. 14-THEQUAN A PRELUDE TO THE BUGLE CALL "TAPS" On April 14h, he A.O.P' depared from Forress Monroe o figh is way up he Peninsula and across he swamps of Chickahominy o Fair Oaks, where Rebel General Joe Johnson was seriously wounded on May 31s. His replacemen, General Rober E. Lee,los no ime in making plans o drive McClellan's forces ino he sea. When McClellan's roops came in sigh of he capial of he confederacy a Richmond, Lee sen General J.E.B. Suar and his calvary o surprise he A.o.P. by compleely surrounding i. 'l\velve hundred roops ravelled 150 miles in hree days. On June 27h, a piched bale was fough a Gaines' Mill. Here,. Buerfield's 83rd Pennsylvania Voluneers began o faler. Buerfield, in spie of a serious wound, seized he Regimenal Colors a a criical momen and rallied his men o hold heir ground.3 This acion allowed he enire A.o.P., which consised of 90,000 men, 400 wagons, and 350 runs, o wihdraw o Harrison's Landing on he J ames River, where seven Union gunboas gave arillery suppor o he ired Army. This was considered one of he mos skillful wihdrawals in miliary hisory. On July 1 s, General Lee, in a desperae move o push McClellan's Army ino he J ames River, sen his Rebels up o Malvern Hill. The massed Union arillery cu he Confederaes o pieces, leaving some 5000 dead on he hillside. Acually, boh sides had suffered heavy losses during he Seven Days bales, and were ready o reire and bind heir broken bodies. Union losses were 1,700 killed and 7,000 wounded. The Confederaes suffered 3,400 killed in acion and 16,000 wounded. On July. 2nd, McClellan esablished his base a Harrison's Landing on he James River. His Army's morale was low, bu sank even lower afer Presiden Lincoln arrived a headquarers and announced ha "reinforcemen was impossible," advising McClellan "o wai, o res, and o repair." While Buerfield lay in his en in an Army Field Hospial recovering from his wound, he reviewed all of he bugle calls of his Brigade, many of which he had composed himself. He had been a grea exponen of he bugle call, being able o blow all calls, and o each his buglers jus how each call should sound. He ook grea pride in he fihe discipline of his men, and he superior conrol he had of heir aciviies hrough he medium of he bugle, in camps, on marches, in bale, and even in he black of nigh. Buerfield was no saisfied wih he final call of he day, variously known as Taps, Taoo, and Lighs Ou. "I did no seem as smooh, melodious, and musical as i should; i was oo formal" He believed ha Taps should bring comfor and peace o he ired and roubled men.! Abou he 4h of July 1862, he called his Brigade bugler, Oliver W. Noron, o his en and showed him some noes on a saff, which he had wrien in pencil on he back of an envelope, and asked Noron o sound on his bugle. 1 Afer hearing he call several imes as wrien, Buerfield hummed and whisled some changes, lenghening some noes and shoren:ing ohers. Afer geing i o his liking, he direced Noron o sound he new Ligh Ou ha nigh and hereafer. Thus, General Buerfield, "wihou any formal knowledge of music, nor of he echnical names of any noes, composed Taps, as we know i oday, simply by ear."1 Laer, Noron said, "The music was beauiful on ha sill summer nigh, and was heard beyond he limis of he Buerfield Brigade as i echoed hrough he valleys. The nex morning, buglers from oher Brigades came o visi and o inquire abou he new Taps and o learn how o sound i."1 Several days afer Taps was born, a soldier in Baery A of he 2nd US Arillery died. Normally, his soldier would have been honored by having his own squad fire hree rifle volleys over his grave. A ha ime, however, he A.O.P. was surrounded and closely observed by he Confederae unis of Jackson, Huger, Longsree, and A.P. Hill. Capain John C. Tidball, he Baery A Commander, and laer faher of Miss Mabel, hough he hree rifle volleys migh provoke new fighing by he Rebels. Neiher side was ready o renew he bale. Capain Tidball old he bugler o "jus sound Taps!"4 In early Augus, as he Federal Army, exhaused and heavy-heared, slowly reraced is seps down he peninsula, he oher unis of he A.o.P. gradually adoped he new bugle call. Taps followed, Buerfield's commands; o Forress Monroe, he firs miliary pos o hear is mournful song, o he Army of Norhern Virginia, o he Army of Cumberland, o he Armies of he Wes (Chaanooga), o Geysburg, and finally on Sherman's March o he Sea. I has been said ha he Confederaes also adoped Taps, using i a he burial of General "Sonewall" Jackson in Thus, on a balefield near Harrison's Landing (now Berkley), Taps was born, as well as he cusom of sounding Taps a miliary funerals. Beween 1871 and 1874, i became mandaory for he Buerfield Taps o be used a all Army funerals. By 1900, all US Miliary Services were using' Taps and, during World War I, France adoped he American call Lae in he Civil War, Buerfield was promoed o Major General; he also received he Medal of Honor for his disinguished gallanry a Gaines' Mill during he Seven Days bales. Afer he war, he reurned o a useful civil life in New York Sae, wher ehe died in He was buried in he cemeery ofhe US Miliary Academy a Wes Poin wih full miliary honors. As Taps was sounded over his grave, few besides his wife knew ha he had been is composer. Buerfield's gallanry has been repored in many Civil War hisories and biographies, bu lile menion has been made of his composiion of Taps. There has been considerable concern as (Coninued on Page 15)

The rumpe has been -well-known since Biblical imes, being used by many Armies, especially o sound an alarm. In he early US Coninenal Army, a combinaion of fife and drum was popular, as seen in he "Spiri of '76." The drum was o remain he chief form of sound signal in he Infanry unil he Civil War. Taps was sounded by a drummer, sanding a he head of he regimenal sree, in single saccao beas, o which he soldiers frequenly chaned:2 "Go o bed, Tom! Go o bed, Thm! Go o bed! Go o bed! Go o bed! Go o bed, Tom!" "Taps is he Army's mos beauiful bugle call. Played slowly and sofly, i has a plainive, ender, and ouching characer.
