1 August is Membership Month August 12th Program: Erica Ralston, American Heart Association, CPR Erica Ralston started her presentation on CPR with an anecdote. Noting that the Heartwalk is September 24th at Sacramento s Land Park (starting at 8:30 am, teamed include several of the Ramos and Clark families), the event chair is Bob Clark, who, Ralston said, would not be here today but for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. A combination of CPR and application of an AED ( six shocks, said Ralston, the 7th brought him back) which lasted nearly 11 minutes, saved his life. Andy Wallace recalled the meeting in which Bob s father, Jim, reported that his son died and came back. At Friday s meeting, members had an opportunity to try their heart-starting skills on manikins Ralston provided. Today, the Heart Association no longer recommends breathing into someone s mouth to try and resuscitate them, and says not to assume an unconscious person has suffered a heart attack. The very first thing you should do if you suspect a heart attack is call 9-1-1, said Ralston, and then lace your fingers and commence pushing regularly and rapidly on the chest, in the upper center, above where the ribs come together and form a V. She said the correct speed and rhythm can be attained by letting the some Stayin Alive repeat in your mind, and to lean over the victim so that your entire body is doing the pushing, not just your arms, which will tire. If there are others present, take turns as one person s arms tire, but don t take your hands away until their hands are ready to continue pushing. A single second lost could mean a 3 percent loss in heart function. She said if someone is unconscious and their chest isn't going up and down their heart has stopped. Those most likely need your CPR will be someone you love, she said. She also mentioned that, in just two days, member Don Clark s daughter, Sally, will be training her entire Clarksburg school s student population in CPR with the Heart Association s free kit. The kit is available to schools, companies, and groups. Member Mike Campbell s Elevation 10, Ralston added, used the kit to train its entire staff. Member Gary Merwin related his heart was restarted at the hospital after his heart attack, using something called the turtle -a shell that covered his chest and then artificially started pushing like a [piston. It was so intense, he said, it ripped his cartilage. Ralston said it s not unusual for CPR to break a rib. Merwin s heart attack was six months ago. Member Dick Marshall, who has open heart surgery a few years ago, said he was proud to report that first responder response tine to Clarksburg from West Sacramento was just 5 minutes. (The Marshall Ranch is a straight shot south on Jefferson from West Sacramento s Fire Station 45 at Jefferson and Lake Washington.)
