1 November is Rotary Foundation Month Chips from the Buzzsaw Weekly Newsletter of the Rotary Club of West Sacramento Volume 68, No 17 November 14, 2016 November 18th Program: Trevor Derrett, Account manger, Membership Sales for the Sacramento Kings By Joanie Kappell Trevor is in charge of King l s ticket sales. He reminded us how it all began back in 1995 when the Kings moved to Sacramento and transformed the city. Getting an NBA team to move to Sacramento was a VERY BIG DEAL!!! The King's fans broke lots of records...sold Out Games, Noise Records and oh those Cowbells! The new Golden One Center is not only a spectacular showcase arena for Sacramento but it also is world renown. It is the ONLY building in the world with the designation "Leed Platinum Certified". This means that is meets the highest level of environmental features. The Golden One Center is 100% powered by the sun. 15% from solar panels on the roof and the remaining 85% from a solar farm in Rancho Seco. Sports Illustrated ranked it in the "Top 10 Coolest Venues in the World". It boasts 17,500 seats with a schedule of 50 Kings games and 200+ concerts and other events on the calendar. It is quite the undertal<ing to host a Kings game one night and then transform the venue into Disney on Ice the next night and then another l<ings game the following night, then a concert, then a rodeo. Crews literally work around the clock to make the changes. The arena is also known for its Farm to Forl< food offerings. Paragary l s, Selland's, Lowbrau and Café Bernardo are just some of the concessions available with 90% of the food coming from farms within 150 miles of Sacramento. They also donate leftover food to Loaves and Fishes. SPEAKER PROGRAM November 25th DARK December 2nd Stay Tuned December 9th Jim Piatt, Realtor December 16th Kevin Sanchez Yolo Food Bank December 23rd DARK December 30th DARK January 6th Ted, author History of Clarksburg January 13th OPEN January 20th OPEN The new arena is only the beginning of the transformation of downtown Sacramento. Just look at the cranes and building construction on J Street. Our downtown core r s new name is "Downtown Commons". We will soon see a variety of new restaurants emerge..."state Fare" featuring comfort food, and Sauced BBQ are just a couple of them. There will be a new arcade style bar called Punch Bowl that will include a bowling alley and corn hole among other games. And a new movie theater that will offer food and adult beverages to be enjoyed while you watch the movie. Another addition will be the new 16 story Kimpton Hotel that will feature 4 floors of retail, office space, 200 hotel rooms and condos on top. The Downtown Partnership website lists all current projects in the area. Club 558 of District 5180 PO Box 288 West Sacramento, CA Meets Every Friday at Club Pheasant, 12:15 pm

2 CHIPS FROM THE BUZZSAW Volume 68, Issue 17 November 18, 2016 Meeting Summary Presiding: Bill Bevier Pledge: Carol Bogart Opening Blessing: Tim Carnahan Tis the Season for Giving Song Leader: Dick Marshall Oh Beautiful Raffle: David Kamminga Foundation Raffle Drawing: Bill Bevier THIS THANKSGIVING WE ARE THANKFUL FOR TERRIFIC TOM WALLACE During the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and well throughout the holiday season, many of us gather around a nice meal prepared by family or friends (God bless you if you do all the cooking!) for many of our annual traditions. Some of us take a different approach, giving back to those that are not as fortunate, and sometimes we do both! Whatever our holiday plans are, we take a moment to stop and think about what we are thankful for, and count the blessings that we have been given. So, when my father, President Bill, told me that the Club would be go dark on the Friday after Thanksgiving, I thought to myself, what relates to these themes of the holiday for the CHIPS? My first thought was to focus on something that involves a lot of our club members. Well, I know that many of our members are residents of the town of Clarksburg, participate in Meals on Wheels, and are active in the Clarksburg Community Church. I started to get excited at all of these different possibilities for Thanksgiving holiday stories. As I started to close in on each to choose one, I realized something there are a few members who are involved in all of these things, and one very special one in particular: Mr. Tom Wallace. Why? Might you ask? There are too many reasons to count. For well over a decade, this caring man has organized volunteers most of them Rotarians to deliver Meals on Wheels. The Meals on Wheels program in our area relies heavily on the volunteer coordination and training that Mr. Wallace provides. His volunteers deliver meals to homebound elderly and disabled people located on six different routes. Mr. Wallace first meets each new volunteer at the former Senior Center on Cummins Way where volunteer kitchen staff prepare the meals and stock the coolers. Together, Mr. Wallace and the new volunteer work the route, taking the meals out of the coolers, knocking on doors, placing hot and cold items on tables, making sure recipients are OK, and, finally, keeping records that include making a note of the temperatures, both hot and cold, of the last meal delivered and the time. In addition to doing his own route, Mr. Wallace frequently fills in for those volunteers who are unable to cover their shift for the month, regardless of the reason. He does this all while flying under the radar, as most of the membership and volunteers don t know how much time Mr. Wallace actually invests in this project. An accomplished musician, he has directed his church choir for a quarter of a century. Successful in business, Tom also volunteers as a key financial adviser at Clarksburg Community Church, where many of his fellow Rotarians are also members. Veteran Rotarian Tom Wallace is a loving example of Rotary s ideal: Service Above Self. Mr. Wallace s contributions do not go unnoticed and are deeply appreciated. Continued on page 3. OBJECT OF ROTARY The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the: ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the dignifying of each Rotarian s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; THIRD: The application of ideal of service by every Rotarian to his/her/ personal, business and community life; FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideals of service. 3 Continued from page 2. What endears Mr. Wallace in a big way to people is that he is just so charming in his dry-witted way. As an example, here is a tongue-and-cheek interview Dick Marshall did with Mr. Wallace a few years back: Rm: So Tom, you moved to Clarksburg 40 years ago and lived across from the house Mike Campbell lives in now. How as that you picked Clarksburg? Tom: I did? 40 years ago? Does Nell know about that? Rm: Well, let s move on. You went to Georgia Tech and played your saxophone. Was that a great experience? TW: I did? The sax? Really? Rm: Okay, Tom you used to work for Kleinfelder as a soils engineer. You went out on your own and rolled the dice to form Wallace and Kuhl. How did that feel? TW: I did? It felt great. How was it for Nell? When did that happen? Rm: Now Tom, you joined Rotary many years ago TW: I did? Rm: Yes, you did. You were very active in the club and rose to become the President of the Rotary Club of West Sacramento. TW: When did that happen? Rm: And Tom, you organized the Meals on Wheels program to cover for a relatively non-descript year as President. When did the Meals on Wheels start? TW: I did? Did I tell I can play the saxophone? I played a lot, was in the Jazz Society and on the board of the Jazz Foundation. We formed the Rotary Rooters with a bunch of former professional and good amateur musicians. We were quite good. What was the question? Rm: When did Meals on Wheels start? TW: Yea, we played a lot of gigs and brought the house down. That was our downfall. RM: What? TW: The lawsuit for the damages of bringing the house down. RM: Thanks for the interview, Tom. How long have you been in the home? TW: I am? This Thanksgiving, Rotary Club of West Sacramento is especially thankful for Tom Wallace. Thank you, for setting the bar so high and for all you do. This front page story in a West Sacramento paper was about Tom Wallace and Meals on Wheels. The story focused on how much Tom, and the program, mean to homebound recipients like Barbara. ROTARY AT THE RACES Ken Wilson reports that President Bill may have had too much fun: Amanda, you Dad is out of control when it comes to gambling. He needs help. President Bill and his wife Robin. Rotary International Tidbits Diabetes The Next Rotary International Project? Diabetes in adults has QUADRUPLED worldwide in the last 25 years, according to the World Health Organization. The changes is significantly correlated with obesity and the most significant increases occurred in China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt and Mexico, although diabetes in the US is increasing rapidly, too. Diet and exercise, folks, diet and exercise.
