1 April is Maternal and Child Health Month Chips from the Buzzsaw April 21st Program: Vocational Service Awards By Drew Gidlof Rotary Clubs Internationally are made up over 1.2 million neighbors, friends, and community leaders who come together to create a positive, lasting change in our communities and around the world. Our avenues of service are Youth Service Programs; Community Service; International programs with programs such as the eradication of the polio virus, clean water and shelters for families in need. Today we will honor individuals through our Vocational Service Program with a recognition to individuals who are dedicated to community service, helping others and who have shown exemplary qualities in their chosen profession. They are our Community Patron Saints. So what is Vocational Service in Rotary??? Vocational Service is one of Rotary s Avenues of Service and calls every Rotarian to: -Aspire to high ethical standards in their occupation; -Recognize the worthiness of all occupations; and -Contribute their Vocational talents to the problems and needs of Society. We are recognizing individuals who may not necessarily be Rotarians, but they exemplify the qualifies that Rotarians possess as defined by Rotary International s goal for Vocational Service -- to promote and to advance high ethical standards within their profession. We would like to thank each of our honorees, and their agency representatives and family who joined them, for taking time to visit our club. It is truly an honor for us to stand amongst professionals of your caliber and integrity. Unfortunately, Yolo County Sheriff s Department Officer of the Year Recipients, Deputy Ryan Mez and Deputy Gary Richter, were unable to attend due to Court Subpoenas. As Vocational Service recognition is so important to us, we are making arrangements to present them with their certificates at a future Rotary gathering. 6 Stay Connected to Justice for All YOUR LINKS TO ROTARY Slavery still exists. According to Gary Haugen, head of the International Justice Mission, an estimated 35 million of the poorest people worldwide generate $150 billion annually for slave traffickers who are rarely prosecuted. That's almost the population of California. One of the worst examples of this was Rwanda in 1994, when over 1 million people were victims of violence and there was no functioning government. At the time, Haugen was a young human rights attorney who headed a UN unit gathering evidence on genocide in order to prosecute the perpetrators for war crimes. He went on to found the International Justice Mission in 1997 to address violence in developing countries. Today, the IJM has 17 offices worldwide and provides support for victims of violence, strengthens law enforcement and attempts to bring violent criminals to justice. Haugen argues that fighting poverty means little when citizens' basic safety is threatened. 7 The President s Page Bill s Box for being a big, bad, Cal Poly grad What an inspiring meeting we had Friday, being able to honor so many individuals within our community for their service. We presented certificates to Fire Fighters (both staffed and volunteer), Police Officers, an EMT, Teachers and School Staff. This was probably one of the most well attended meetings we have had. Lots of guests. Additional seats had to be arranged. Thanks to the staff at Club Pheasant for all of their help. We were honored to have both out District Governor Barbara Tracy and Assistant Governor Angela Spease with us today. Angela mentioned she may be present for the Awards Presentation, but it was a complete surprise to see Governor Barbara. Thank you both for attending our Club s special gathering. Wild Bill Bevier President, MIGHTY Rotary Club of West Sacramento OPENING REMARKS FROM PRESIDENT WILD BILL As Rotarians, we like to do good works and we try to recognize members within our club for their volunteer activities. But we also realize that it takes the entire community to raise awareness within the community, educate the community, keep the community safe, and support the community. It makes me proud to be the 68th President of the Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento as we recognize individuals within our community for their service. Welcome honorees and guests! Our thought presented by Tim Carnahan reflected on many of our senior members who may not often make it to the meetings. We should always keep them in our thoughts and prayers. Katherine O Leary, Jim Clark, and Ike Parsons, to name a few. It was great to see Ike there Friday. A phone call or an is just a slick away. Governor Barbara mentioned that there are only a few Mighty Rotarians from West Sacramento presently registers for the District Conference in two weeks. In fact, there are more from the new club in Clarksburg than there are from West Sacramento. I have not heard on the count from the West Sacramento Centennial Club. I guess since we are the District 5180 Clubs from Yolo County, we should cheer as one to make a big impression. Rotary Up!, Bill Rotary Up!!! Page 7
