Roy joined Kiwanis in late He has since become very active attending meetings as his work schedule permits, attends flying squadrons as often as he can, helps with our various fund raising and service projects, has become active with the Terrific Kids program, and has gotten our club more actively involved in some of the activities at Feed My People. Roy is currently serving as our President.
3 Volume 34:26 April 3, 2019 Page 3 Kiwanis Meeting Easter Message Pastor Bill Simmons April 3, members and 1 guest present: Rev. Bill Simmons, our speaker. President Roy presided. Ed has contacted Assumption School about being in our Outstanding Student program. He is waiting for their reply. We ll have a flying squadron next Tuesday to Chesterfield Kiwanis Club. There will also be a flying squadron on April 17 to Maplewood. April 17 is the 60+ BBQ at Oakville High School. We will be grilling hamburgers at 9:30 and the lunch begins at 11:00. We contemplated having a speaker from the Better Together initiative, but tabled it for now because we d like to also have a speaker come to talk about negative effects, and currently there is no organized effort against it from which we could contact a speaker. Reading is Fun will be on April 22. Cassie reminded us that if we shop at Fresh Thyme and purchase a reusable bag, $1 will be given to the Gateway Citadel of the Salvation Army. Roy introduced Rev. Bill Simmons who gave us an Easter message. Pastor Bill has retired from full-time ministry, but is working as a part-time chaplain at Laclede Groves. He and his wife, Gail, have enjoyed some traveling and are planning on going to the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany in July, In 1633 the plague hit the town of Oberammergau, and the citizens made a pact with God that if they were spared from the plague, they would create the Passion Play. In 1634, the first Passion Play was held and, except during WWI and WWII, they have presented the play every 10 years. In preparation for traveling outside the U.S., we must check certain things: current passport, whether our credit cards are good in foreign countries, whether people speak English, what happens if I get separated from the tour group, currency exchange and tipping practices, and what to do if you need medical attention. Every journey has its own set of challenges. We are currently on our Lenten journey. It is marked by prayer, reflection, repentance, and anticipation. We consider the journey that Jesus took: the temptation of Jesus by the devil; Jesus fasting for 40 days; sleeplessness and fatigue; tears at the death of his friend Lazarus; and anguish in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus knew all of this before starting on his journey, but he also knew the reward was even better -- Easter and Resurrection. The book of Hebrews tells us to approach the throne of grace with confidence. Prayer is the lifeblood of faith. We don t have to have the normal traveling concerns on our Lenten journey, because we know how the story ends. Happy $$: All for Pastor Bill s Easter message, plus Roy for not finding our pens on E-bay; Gerry for the celebration of her brother-in-law s life; Pastor Bill for the work of Kiwanis; and Chad wishes Pastor Bill & Gail safe travels. 50/50: Drawing - Jeanne. Lottery Ticket - Louann. President Roy presented Pastor Bill Simmons with a South County Kiwanis pen in appreciatin for his presentation of our Easter Message today. Around the Circuit Feed My People Trivia Night, April 13; Meramec-Valley Kiwanis Trivia Night, April 13; Bridgeton Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast April 14; Chesterfield Kiwanis Prayer Breakfast, April 18; Glendale-Kirkwood Kiwanis Wine & Beer Tasting Party April 25; Crestwood-Sunset Hills Kiwanis Golf Tournament, May 6; Club Leader Education Training,
