Charity is defined as the giving of help or money to aid in the relief of the poor, ill, or helpless. It is also one of the defining principles of our Order. Some definitions also include the stipulation that the giver receives nothing in return. This is where I have to question our designation as a charitable organization. We are "The Little Lodge that does Big Things". Each year we make our Major Projects per capita which goes to help the Cerebral Palsy Home Service Program. This provides support for adults and children with disabilities and their families in their home environment. We will also make our ENF per capita and receive grants from ENF that will help defer the cost of the Johnson City High School's After Prom Party and Catholic Charities Summer Reading and Backpack Program. Our Dog Show (coming up on June 1st) will raise a great deal of money for our local Humane Society. Our Christmas Charities Auction provides gifts and a Christmas Party for HCA and Mom's House clients. In May we honored local youth with a Saturday picnic, and in September we will honor our local police and firemen. We spent Mother's Day with the residents at the Highlands and provided a delicious breakfast. So why is it I question our designation as a charitable organization? (If you don't see where this is going, you need to come down to the Lodge more often!) Yes, many JC Elks donate a lot of time and money to see that these "charitable" events occur, but what we get in return is priceless. Work with the group from HCA and our own Kenny, Scottie, Bruce, Mike, and Ron during their BBQ or decorate with HCA and Gayle, Chris, Gary, Steve, and Jerry in preparation for the JC Christmas parade it's rewarding and entertaining! Deal Black Jack with Kathy and her Las Vegas style dealers for the high school seniors at JC as they look to their bright new future. Take time this summer to read your favorite children's book to the kids at Catholic Charities. Spend a girl's day wrapping Christmas gifts with Sharon, Paula, Sierra, Hannah, Wendy and many more. (We take male wrappers too!) Become an elf with Alicia, Barb, Hope, and many more of Santa's helpers and our own Scottie Santa as they fill wish lists for HCA clients, or when Herbie, Santa, and his helpers travel to the Oxford Vets Home. Play Elroy for the youth picnic (thank you Mary) or come down and flip burgers for the firemen. So if charity means getting nothing in return, we don't qualify. We get the appreciation of those we help, the sense of accomplishment of a job well done, but most importantly great memories, brotherhood, and love and lasting friendship shared by people united for a common goal. Come on down to the Lodge and see what "charitable" acts we're up to, and what a great time we have doing them! -Suz Look throughout this newsletter for a membership number. It will look like this **999**. If it is your number, just come to the lodge bar and claim your Friday Night Dinner For One prize certificate. The winner must come in person and show his or her membership card to the bartender. Your prize must be claimed before the month has ended. That s all there is too it! You can then use it on any Friday Night.

2 2 2 ELK OF THE MONTH Dave Hillis Dave plants and maintains the area around our sign and mailbox so the front of our lodge looks extraordinary! He is also part of the "adopt a highway" program, and his handiwork can be seen on route 17 west just before the Endicott exit. He is known to drive people to church that would otherwise have missed services, and has made sure parents can get to and from their kids' baseball games. Calling all Night Owls! On Thursday, June 20th, the Johnson City Elks Lodge will be manning the Casino area at the JCHS After Prom Party. Two hour shifts are available, or you can attempt to stay "Up All Night". We will be dealing Black Jack and Texas Holdem for the attendees. If you don't deal there are many other jobs you can do. This is part of our Lodge Drug Awareness Program and demonstrates our commitment to the youth in our community. 4 4 4 Did You Know? A column to keep us connected as a Lodge Family! Bill Maney s daughter, Maureen E Maney, is a partner in the litigation practice of Hancock Estabrook, LLP. Maureen was named a 2013 Rising Star by the New York Law Journal. Her practice concentrates on the defense of corporations, individuals, and healthcare providers. She handles civil litigation at both the trial and appellate levels. Maureen graduated from Johnson City High School, LeMoyne College and earned her JD from the Albany Law School. Congratulations Bill, we know how proud you are of Maureen. Milestones: Congratulations to all our high school graduates! Sierra Merrick is the daughter of David Merrick, Paula and Dan Hoover, granddaughter of Steve and Sharon Flint. She will be attending Broome Community College. Micah Neiss is the son of Doug and Kathy Neiss, grandson of Connie Carle and nephew of Jodi Dribnak. He will be attending Broome Community College. Doug Klein is the son of Gayle Klein and grandson of Emilie Klein. He will be attending Broome Community College. Aidan Klein is the son of Gayle Klein and grandson of Emilie Klein. (Yes, they are twins!) He will also be attending Broome Community College. Another milestone! Our member Mike Belveg, son of Holly and Bob Belveg graduated from The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry! Congratulations Mike! Our member, Steve Flint was presented the Distinguished Veteran s Volunteers Service Award. The event was held in the Broome County Legislative Chambers and shown on TV. Congrats Steve, we know how much time and energy you put into the veteran transportation program. Our lodge members recently attended the NYS Elks convention in Albany. Our little lodge was the envy of the convention. Sue kept hearing You have your own bagpiper? Sue was able to state, not only do we have Leona, we have several bagpipers in our lodge! Actually we have a band of pipers!! So proud of you Leona! Bakers needed Every Friday! Part of our Friday dinner appeal is our homemade desserts. We are looking for members to sign up for a set Friday i.e. 1 st Friday, 2 nd Friday, 3 rd Friday, 4 th Friday of each month to donate a dessert. Ideally if 4 to 5 people could sign for each Friday it would help us not needing to make phone calls. Many churches do this, and we thought it would cut down the confusion and calls to members. Our Friday dinners help pay the monthly bills at our lodge so we can keep our dues low. If you haven t stopped in for one lately I highly recommend it as a great buy for $8! The event was very well attended, and a good time was had by all. Special thank you to Kim and Paul Reger for the hilarious roast! Congratulations Sharon! Youth Day was held on May 11 th. The lodge served a picnic lunch and ice cream brownie sundaes to more than 30 youth and their families. The lodge-sponsored girls' softball team presented ER Sue with a plaque. Thanks to Ken, Hope, Alicia, Gayle, Sue, and Elroy (Mary) for all your help. Big thank you to Scotty, Ken, Hope, and Emilie for making our Mother's Day celebration a huge success. The residents at Highlands were thrilled at being invited and enjoyed it very much. The Secret is OUT! One of the great appeals to our Friday dinners is the delicious homemade desserts.
