Genthe State Diocesan Membership Fraternal Year March 2012 Membership Memo Wow! What a great month new members, giving us 145 new members more than at this same time last year. hank you, thank you, thank you to everyone that went out of their way to recruit new members. know there are some members that would like to see how we are doing overall. Even with our positive growth, our net is 375, and our net net is -206 for a state membership of 37,201. Unfortunately we still have 107 councils that have yet to recruit a new member. f you need help in recruiting, feel free to contact me, your District Deputy or Diocesan Membership Coordinator. Green Bay La Crosse Madison Milwaukee Superior otal Quota /29/ % 86% 55% 30% 77% 54% Percentages for the February quotas are: Green Bay 62%, La Crosse 184%, Madison 101%, Milwaukee 68%, Superior 360%, State 118%. Let's bring some luck of the rish to the March recruiting and remember, membership is your responsibility and mine! Daniel Spencer State Membership Director Message from the State Deputy Chaplain Report hank you to the Councils that have helped achieve and surpass the membership goals in the Superior, La Crosse, Green Bay, and Madison Dioceses in February. We have four months in which to reach the Circle of Honor goal of 1368 new members in Wisconsin for this fraternal year. We can and will meet this goal as there are dedicated brother Knights to help all of our Councils reach their membership quotas. All you have to do is ask. s your Council planning some sort of Founders Day activity? his may be just the event your council needs to get out of the winter blues and spring forward into spring. Benefit programs, as you know are experiencing some shortages of Field Agents in our fine State. he General Agents are trying to fill these positions with capable Knights to help serve each and every one of your needs. hey need our help to find them men in your area that you think would fit into the Knights of Columbus Program. When your Council is ready to host a Benefit Program give these Agents plenty of advance notice so they are able to get you on their schedule. he Agents are our link with Supreme and the State in explaining what there is to offer in the Knights of Columbus along with the nsurance. We still have about 45 Councils that have not sent in their Fraternal Survey Report as of last Friday. hese reports may seem useless to you and a pain to fill out but this report is what Supreme compiles the data that the RS requires organizations (Continued on page 3) A s write, the March winds are blowing aggressively against and through my slightly opened windows. While winter has been a fizzle, as far as am concerned, spring is boldly making its appearance. Amongst the current dynamics of national political campaigns, serious weather threats, international social upheavals and economic instability, there remains the evident track record of human survival and development. We humans are created in the image and likeness of God. Our God is Dynamic Love always has been and always will be. he on-coming presence of spring reminds us once again that Life triumphs over death. he example of Jesus Christ himself demonstrates that reality most clearly. Several times this morning ve looked out my window to observe geese flying into the strong winds now prevailing. he flyers didn t do well; but they did not give up either. hey merely altered their flight direction slightly to advance more strategically at a reasonable angle. With the grace and wisdom of God we do the same thing in our daily practical living. he season of Lent calls us to look more critically at the society in which we live and exercise more conscientiously our Christian Faith within that society following more closely the words and example of Jesus with which we are blessedly endowed. We move from ashes to Easter in step with the living Body of Christ, of which we are members. Both Easter eggs and bunnies are down-to-earth symbols of the prodigious Life extended to us by God. 2 From the State Programs Coordinator s Desk B rother Knights, We are once again starting to wind down towards the end of the year. t is not too late to turn in your Service Program Awards but the deadline is March 15, please recall that your history book entry in this area must be verified by the actual submittal of the service award to the State office or myself. have received less than 4 dozen at this time. Many of you have done some truly wonderful things this year and we want you to receive acknowledgement for your efforts. Please recall that these state awards are among the first to be awarded at the State Convention. As you know the State Youth Spring competitions, namely free throw and knowledge, will be held Saturday, March 17 in Wisconsin Rapids at Assumption High School. hope that councils are sending a representative to cheer their local representation at this event. Registration is at 9 and events are scheduled for noon. Let s support our youth in these events. Remember that in order to meet the Complete Council Award you need to fulfill your requirements in the following areas: administration, membership, church, community, council, family and youth. Many of these have paperwork to report your activity while others do not, if you have not informed your District Deputy or diocesan coordinator of activities like a memorial mass, please do so. On March 24 a group of your brother knights will be in Madison for judging of the History Books. have attended these in the past, and can assure you that many careful hours are spent reviewing your council s activities. Good luck to all of you on your history book. f your history book is not in existence, make a commitment to start one for next year. t is a great recruiting tool as it tells the reader what your council has been doing over the past year. Remember to ask, why would a new member want to join? Have you got your reservation made for the State Convention? t is less than two months away and will be here before you know it. Has your ootsie Roll Drive been scheduled yet, check with your local businesses to get permission and round up your brother knights to pitch in to this very worthwhile event. State Charity Raffle ickets are still available if you have run out and need more. can honestly say that have only been turned down by two people so far when offering them for sale. Set a goal for your own sales and visit your neighbors and friends. hope this message finds you staring at melting snow, mother nature has decided to tease us in the north country just one more time, but there has not been much so far, so we do welcome it. Hope to see you at Wisconsin Rapids. Vivat Jesus. Don Schoenherr State Programs Director/Youth Development State Secretary B rother Knights, he Annual Meeting of the Wisconsin Jurisdiction is being held at the Marriott Hotel & Convention Center in Madison on April 28th and 29th. We are approaching many deadlines: Hotel rooming March 15th, Delegate Credentials March 15th, 50, plus years of membership March 15th, and Pre-registration for convention events March 15th. hese are all important dates and council need to address these dates if you have not already. hank you Worthy Grand Knights for complete the Supreme reports. At this time we have only 47 councils that have not completed the Fraternal Survey and 49 council that have not completed the December Semi-Annual Audit. (See Right) t is important that both of these are filed ASAP. he Fraternal Survey is what keep the Knights of Columbus with income tax exemption. he Semi Annual Audit allow the Supreme Council to have bonding on the Financial Secretary and reasurer of the Councils. f a council misses two audit, they will lose their bonding and fraternal benefits. 3 State Charity Raffle he Grand Knight and other Council Officers should continue to promote ticket sales at your monthly meetings and in your monthly newsletter. Remind your members of the reason why we knights need this raffle and that they should give it their complete support (Remember the lesson of the First Degree.). t is also a great way to raise funds for their councils own charity giving. Explain that for every ticket that they buy/ sell that the council will receive the two dollar rebate plus if sales meet/exceed an average of three tickets per member that there will be an additional bonus. Contact your Diocesan Charity Coordinator to obtain more tickets for your council if you run short. Stubs of ickets that have been bought/sold must be returned to the Councils Charity Raffle Charity Chairman to be recorded and processed. his is a very important part of the program so that the local council can receive the rebates and bonus. he Chairman will also keep the Second Chance Drawing stub for the councils own use. Remind your members that they must not send any checks and/or stubs to the Convention Hotel or to our State Office. We have many of our neighbors that may be in need of help that is more than the local council can provide and a good way to help them is to fill out a charity request. he blank request form is available on our State Council Website. t is important to fill out this form as completely as possible. ncomplete forms slow down the process of making the charity grants. Be sure to fill out the section that asks how the local council is helping. f you have any questions, please contact your Diocesan Charity Committee member of the Committee Director. Keep up your good works so we can make our goal of sales of Five ickets per member in the State of Wisconsin. Family of the Month Report W ith the Family of the Year selections made, hope your council s nomination was the one that the Family of the year committee selected from your diocese. he selection process is always a difficult thing to do, because there are always excellent well deserving families that are nominated. f your family s nomination was not chosen, please during the State Convention, stop by the Family exhibit and pick up the nomination your family director sent in. f you would like, take this nomination next year and update it, send it back for consideration next year. During these past few months, while serving as Family coordinator, the things see, do, and hear, are many times viewed thru the eyes of Family coordinator. ask myself, how do these actions by others and myself, affect my family and the families of others? Since we consider ourselves Christians, how can we prove that we are Christian? go to Mass every Sunday does that prove that am a Christian? am baptized and confirmed does that prove am a Christian? don t think it does. As a Knight of Columbus, we are issued a membership card, and this states that we are a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Knight. f we have a library card, that means we are a member of that particular library system. So don t have a card that says am a Christian, how do prove that am? here is, in my opinion, a simple answer, by my actions. Am doing what Jesus Christ teaches us to do? Am putting considerations for others before considerations for myself. Have been blessed with an excess, and have shared that excess freely and generously with others less fortunate. Do visit people that can t get out, to take them shopping and lift their spirits. Do obey the en Commandments or do justify my actions in business by saying, haven t broken any state or national laws, or by saying everyone does it. could go on and on but think the way we prove that we are Christians, is by doing, and trying to be like Jesus Christ. he Knights of Columbus is an organization that helps me focus on other people and helping other people. hope the Knights of Columbus is making a difference in yours and your family s life. Among these is the need to recruit new members. We want to help our councils achieve the coveted Star Council Award. 6 Faith Development Empathy During Lent o show empathy is to identify with another s feelings. t is to put yourself emotionally in the place of another. Lent is a good time to practice more empathy in our lives. As knights we place special emphasis on being charitable. One way we can practice charity is to show empathy for those who are afflicted. his past fall my neighbor passed away. He was well known and liked in the community, and always took time to chat with us when doing our yard work at the same time. Over the past 18 years we ve been neighbors and how busy life tends to be, we didn t get to know each other well. Now, when look out back seeing his home directly in my view, his newer pick-up sport utility vehicle standing still in the driveway, that so often waved to him while he drove by, wonder how his widow and their children feel and live from day to day with this reality. Visions of the sadness expressed by them and those attending his funeral help me to pray for his soul and his surviving family. his makes me want to do something thoughtful or kind for them; and hopefully can respond appropriately when the opportunity becomes available. As knights we also place special emphasis on unity. hough empathy is usually used when sensing someone else s painful feelings, we can likewise show empathy in someone else s positive feelings of their accomplishments, success, achievements and joyful moments. Recently my youngest son, who some of you met while at the Supreme Convention in Denver, got a new job with increased salary and benefits. hough several instances of misfortune have occurred in his life, and most recently the engine going bad in the used vehicle he just purchased this past December, him getting this better paying job with benefits is a positive occurrence of which we can reinforce, be thankful and happy for him. After all, there are many citizens out of work or for various reasons can t work. When informed, thanked God because had been praying about this for him. hese and similar examples have taught me how empathy leads us to prayer. As knights we practice fraternity. Empathy is closely related to compassion, but precedes it. magine for a moment putting ourselves within the passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, experiencing His joys and sorrows. Did Our Lord not have empathy for all of us? o answer this question, think of the first sorrowful mystery of the Holy Rosary: he Agony in the Garden. Our Lord had so much empathy that his sweat turned into drops of blood. When we attend Mass, pray the Holy Rosary and participate in the Stations of the Cross, we are showing empathy for our Lord. here is a saying when you re feeling down in life, pray for something or someone else and it will help you cope with your particular instance. his doesn t mean we are happy that we don t have it as bad as someone else, but to simply show feelings and concern about others. t can be of either a painful or joyful experience, or a prayer of gratitude. During this Lenten season brother knights, let us focus more on the feelings and needs of others. Eternal Father, offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. Amen. Vivat Jesus, Karl Vandenberg Faith Development Coordinator MOR Award (Most Outstanding Round able) t s that time of year again when our Round ables in the State of Wisconsin have an opportunity to compete for the Most Outstanding Round able. his award will be presented to the winning Council s Grand Knight at this years State Convention. Please fill out form 2630 and send it to the State Office, Supreme and/or myself by March 15 th. t has been a pleasure these past three years to review the submitted forms and read about the many different projects we are doing for our many different Parishes. One of the comments have made many times is that our Councils do many good deeds and donate time and money in support of our Parishes. Maybe you don t always fill out the paperwork, telling the rest of the world what good things you are doing (you knew was going to make a comment about this). Maybe now would be a good time to fill out Form 2629 and form 2630 (forming a Round able and reporting what the Round able has done this year)... both forms are to be filled out annually. Remember, please get form 2630 to me by March 15. f you would like, can forward a copy to the State Office and the Supreme Office for you. hanks Again... 7 D ear Brothers in Christ, Many of you are speaking out about the cold, calculated attack on religious freedom we are currently experiencing. Several have asked if there would be a resolution at our convention regarding this. Although was tasked with writing such a resolution, one of your brothers beat me to it. What Council 3099 in Sauk City submitted was so well written it would have been foolish of me to offer another version. his is your convention and, rightfully so, your resolution. You are invited to come, into the very shadow of Madison, the home of the infamous Freedom From Religion Foundation, and have your council s voice be heard and your council s vote be counted. Many of you have already guessed that what we are currently experiencing is not a single, isolated event. t is instead part of a carefully developed strategy, and a plan that has been in the making for many years by those opposed to what we all hold very dear. hey are very clever in that they cover their true intentions with high-minded rhetoric. With eternal patience, they turn up the heat to boil us only a little at a time; and many, even many of our own brothers in the Knights of Columbus, still fail to admit that the rising heat is being purposefully applied to them. Pray that they be Message from the PSD M y Brother Knights, he lesson of the NEW 3 rd Degree ceremonial is being taught in all five Dioceses. Currently we have (6) teams that have Exemplified new 3 rd Degree members. Here is a list of the CO s; District Deputy Don Leu (#48) Madison, District Deputy James Zoellner (#30) La Crosse, Don Daniewicz, (Public Relations), Madison, Charles Silver, (History Book), Superior, Michael Angeli, Milwaukee, Dan Stunger, Green Bay. We are still in the process of fine tuning the procedure for a council requesting a 3 rd degree. have a new form and it has been approved by the state officers. We hope to have this on the state web-site ASAP. A request Notes from the State Advocate open to the Gift of Wisdom. do not know the entire strategy, but can predict parts of it. Elements will include the time honored methods of war known as thrust and parry and divide and conquer. hese methods are being used brilliantly against us. hrust and parry involves attacking to force your opponent back so as to gain ground, and then stepping back, not all the way, but only a bit to parry the counter attack, holding some of the gained ground. n this case your enemies parry will also be used to divide and conquer us. Here is what they will do, but only if we are able to sustain our counter attack. f forced to give back even a little ground, and right now they are so successfully winning the battle to frame the debate as one of women s health care issues and not religious freedom that they may have no need to give back any ground. Still, to completely implement their longer range goals will take a few more years, so think they will give back the ground and further divide us to ensure their ultimate success. What they will give back is sterilization and abortion inducing drugs. hey will retain the mandate on contraception and many Catholics will once again be duped. hey will say, See, we are willing to compromise, but the Catholic Church is intransigent. You just can t work with form must be submitted to me so can assign a 3 rd degree team. When a team is assigned the CO will work with the host council with details/items needed for the 3 rd degree. Most council s should have these items. he cost for the degree is $5.00 for the medallion each new candidate receives during the degree, and $1.00 for each candidate, for miscellaneous expenses for the 3 rd degree team. f there is a lunch for the degree this cost is determined by the council. A lunch should be provided for the team. here is no mileage cost imposed on the host council. he CO will bring the medallions to the degree. We need more 3 rd degree teams throughout the state. State Deputy Dan Hull had 16 Brother Knights who indicated they would put a team together, so far only (6) have them. Of course they know that informed Catholics not only know that the use of contraception is a mortal sin, but we even know why. We have armed ourselves with the most powerful weapon in this war, and that is the ruth. he ruth is available on Relevant Radio and EWN. t is available from OneMoreSoul where you will find the work of Dr. Janet Smith, the present holder of the K of C endowed Chair of Life Ethics at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Michigan. t is available from heologyofthebody and from the USCCB as well as from the KofC. Why is this important? By dividing Catholics they can gather more power. hey know that we can not cooperate with evil and with this move they will force Catholics to stop providing medical care to many of those most in need in our country. his will create a crises which they will step in to alleviate, thereby taking over, in one fell swoop, 20 percent of the country s hospital system. n this information age war an uninformed Catholic is an unarmed Catholic. hose who have ears ought to hear the call to arms. My Brothers, arm yourselves. Vivat Jesus, Ron Faust State Advocate stepped up to the plate. believe there are 2-3 more teams being assembled, but we need more. f you are interested, please contact our State Deputy. On behalf of the State Officers, would like to thank all those who have committed to a NEW 3 rd degree team. Congratulations to the NEW 3 rd degree members and thanks to all those who came to support there candidates. Since the first NEW 3 rd degree lesson was taught in Marshfield, over 300 members have been exemplified. By the time you read this newsletter two more NEW 3 rd degrees will have taken place. f you have further questions in regards to the 3 rd degree you can contact me. Roland Ransom PSD 7 March 2012
