Guski August 2012 Membership Memo: Membership is Your Responsibility, and Mine he first month of the new fiscal year is in the books and we have fallen a little short of last year's numbers. Membership as of 7/1/12 is 37,233, with the recruiting for July leaving the net at -6, the net net at -45 and the State membership at 37,188. he dog days of summer also bring thoughts of cooler weather and Green Bay Packer football. With that thought, our Worthy State Deputy im Genthe (a die hard Chicago Bears fan) has agreed to wear Packer clothes at the next District Deputy meeting (pictures will be taken and posted), but only if we meet the state membership quota for first five months of this fiscal year. Any council that would appreciate help in recruiting members, please contact the Field Agent assigned to your council, General Agent, or Diocesan coordinator. Our General Agents and Field Agents are also our best salesmen for recruiting. Green Bay LaCrosse Madison Milwaukee Superior otal Quota /31/ % 2% 5% 1% 6% 3% Percentages for July quotas are: Green Bay 35%, LaCrosse 27%, Madison 56%, Milwaukee 17%, Superior 68%, State 35%. One Member Per Council Per Month My Brother Knights, he Wisconsin Jurisdiction was represented well again at this year s Supreme Convention in Anaheim, California. We are proud to bring home the 1 st Runner up for the Family of the Year. he Kevin and Susan Breit family from Mosinee came with a few points of being named the International Family of the Year. We can be proud of our Wisconsin family and the involvement they have with their family, church and community. he Wisconsin Jurisdiction started the convention with the Guadalupe Festival on Sunday with nearly 60,000 other festival attendees. I was humbled sitting in the stadium with all the festival attendee praying the Rosary, some of us in English and some of us Spanish. his was a moving experience for me and all the convention attendees. his year convention theme was Proclaim Liberty hroughout the Land. Supreme Knight Carl Anderson during the Supreme Knight s address stated Seldom has religious liberty been threatened in so many places in the world, and never before in this country s history have people of faith faced such widespread threats to their religious freedom as they face today here in the United States, for Catholics, and all people of faith, this is a critical moment. he Supreme Knight encouraged us all to become in involved in the political process, to educate ourselves in the teachings of the Catholic Church and the views of the candidates, so we are informed voters when we go to the poles this coming election. (Continued on page 3) Wishing you God's grace and many blessings. Have a safe and wonderful summer. Daniel Spencer, State Membership Director spencer506@frontier.com NOURISH YOUR CHAPLAIN BE NOURISHED BY YOUR CHAPLAIN Sometimes the smallest gesture means a lot. I see on my calendar the monthly KC meeting. It comes at the end of a long and sometimes energy draining day. he temptation to find an excuse to excuse myself from the meeting is strong. But I got, enter the room, and someone says so all could hear, All stand!, all rise and greetings ring in my ears. I must admit to a little embarrassment by the gesture, but it means a lot. I come to realize once again my role as chaplain, that these great and generous men of the Knights of Columbus are concerned and supportive of my welfare. Some suggestions help the chaplain understand that he is not a figurehead in the organization. He is an essential part of your KC leadership team. Make sure that he knows you understand the demands of his ministry. Give him the position early in the meeting to speak (#7 on the agenda). If he must leave after that, let him do so with your gratitude. Keep up good communication being left out of the loop tells the chaplain he is not needed. Priests will go where they sense they are needed. Ask him for spiritual guidance. Ask him to help you pray better, see the real value of things more clearly, be stronger when winds seem to blow against you, change when you need to change. Be his friend. Many chaplains find true and lasting friendships from members of the Knights of Columbus. Friends help us through tough times. Be there in the right way for him. A strong and growing council needs a vigorous team. he chaplain is part of that team. Nourish him; let him nourish you. Peace always, Fr. Dennis Mullen, State Chaplain. 1 August 2012

Council 1762 District 81 Family of the Month Report Just this past week I received a note from our State Deputy on the status of the International Family of the Year nomination. Sorry to say that we did not have the top selection this year, but we were the first runner up. I want to congratulate the Kevin and Susan Breit Family, for giving us a good example of how family living can be. Since we are starting a new fraternal year, I decided to do some analysis of the past year. I feel it was a successful first year a s Family Coordinator, but feel there is much more to do, and there are many more possibilities, with the Wisconsin State Family programs. I would like to hear from all of you, about what you feel our Family program should attempt to do. I am feeling that our councils may attempt to be educating our parish and community families about aspects of family life including health aspects, food, our environment, and maybe how chemicals are being used, without our knowledge in our lives. Let me know what you think. I don t know how a council would do this, but am just doing some brain storming and am looking for ideas. In the family summary chart I have listed the information from the Family of the month program for I am going to set a goal to increase all these totals by 10% for this fraternal year, so am asking all the councils that are not sending in Family of the Month nominations, please begin sending them in for inclusion, and monthly consideration, in the Family of the month program. I know there are many councils that are choosing and recognizing families, but are not sending them to me for inclusion in the state program. I am encouraged though, because this month, I received nominations from three councils, which last year did not send in any nominations. Continue the good work, and remember to ask the question, what would Jesus do? As Knights, we are very caring and compassionate people; this is evident from the millions of dollars we raise to give to charitable organizations, and the millions of hours we spend physically helping other people. his year, I propose we add a different form of charity to our list, a donation that will not buy shoes, build a ramp, or cook burgers. Instead I suggest we educate our Squires in the ways of our church, charity, and family. As we go through the year planning events, we need to invite them to sit with us while planning, and manning a concession stand, while helping a neighbor, or while saying a prayer. It is through direct face to face contact that these Squires will grow and develop their leadership skills, as well as their love of the Catholic Church. We need to provide them with the best role models we can. Since the inception of the Knights of Columbus by Venerable Michael J McGivney, the best role models in the world have been Knights; so step up, together, we will instruct our youth and create a brighter future for the world. 3 Carl also discussed the latest initiative of the Knights of Columbus, a nationwide Campaign for Civility in America, which is an online petition drive that will give the American people a voice in speaking up for a respectful public discourse. More than 16,000 people have already signed the petition at he Wisconsin Jurisdiction is talking with the Wisconsin Catholic Conference and the Bishops in doing a voter registration drives in the near future. here will be more details in the effort in the near future so be prepared to rally the membership in this important program for Wisconsin politics. he Wisconsin Jurisdiction has always been a leader in our support of the religious vocations within the order. Once again, we are calling on you to step forward and lead the order. he Supreme Council has set a goal for 4 th Degree Assemblies and 3 rd Degree Councils of each jurisdiction to raise $4,000 for the Military Chaplain Scholarship program. Wisconsin can accomplish this goal if each assembly and council would send as little as $50.00 to the State Office. Please make the checks payable to Knights of Columbus and in the memo area, write; Military Scholarship. With your help I know Wisconsin can be a leader in this worthy cause. Membership is the backbone of any organization and this is true for the Knights of Columbus. At the Spring District Meetings, the District Deputies and members of the membership team have explained the important of recruiting new members with this year s membership theme being ONE MEMBER, PER COUNCIL, PER MONH. Many of you already know I am Chicago Bears fan. At the Spring District Meeting your membership team along with the District Deputies challenge me that you they would meet the membership goal for the first five months of the fraternal year, I would put on the Green and Gold of the Packers for the Fall District Deputy meeting. I gladly accepted the challenge and I am glad to report that I this time it looks like I may not have to wear the green and gold. But there is still time to prove me wrong and make we wear those colors of the Packers. I look much better in Bear colors. Remember ONE MEMBER, PER COUNCIL, PER MONH. BE NO AFRAID God Bless imothy Genthe State Deputy A Message from the Supreme Council General Agents of WI: Update your beneficiaries Sometimes it is easy to overlook the simplest of things. ake the beneficiaries on your life insurance policies. If your policy was applied for and issued several years ago, it could very well be that the person you originally selected as the beneficiary is no longer the person you would want to receive the policy proceeds. If you bought the policy when you were single, for example, you may have named your parents as beneficiaries. If you have since married that should be updated to reflect your spouse or your children as beneficiaries. Most people list a primary beneficiary, who is specifically designated as the first in priority to receive policy proceeds. We also encourage the naming of a contingent beneficiary, an alternate person designated to receive policy proceeds, usually in the event that the original beneficiary pre-deceases the insured. Our Field Agents routinely call all of their policyholders for annual review appointments, usually near the anniversary date of the policy the date it was originally issued. One of the matters that they discuss during this review is the status of your beneficiary designations. If they need updating, and they often do, they can complete the paperwork during that appointment. We d like to help you by discussing your family s needs. Call us today. Forms are posted on the website to either submit a minimum quantity of information, or to also provide an annual description of your council activities. Whichever method each council provides makes little difference when we begin assembling the information, but I encourage you to do the best job possible. You are either proud of your council or not. Please, submit this to me in electronic form. I know everyone does not have the capability, but someone in your council must have a computer. I have received a couple that were written in by hand, and some of the hand writing or printing is not very hard to read. Please use a computer. 4 State reasurer Dear Brother Knights, here are responsibilities that come with being a Knight, not the least of those is fiduciary. While this is true for every Knight who is required to pay dues, this is especially true for Grand Knights, rustees, Financial Secretaries, and reasurers. And at this time of year that responsibility takes the form of the semiannual audit. imely filing of the semiannual audit, due August 15, is more important than ever. It has always been true that the bonding that Supreme extends to the Financial Secretary cannot be continued in the face of a failure to file two consecutive audits. his is because it is completely unfair to expect our Brother Knights of councils that are in compliance to continue to assume the risk for those who do not require that their council remain in compliance. But this year, while we Knights take up the call to defend religious liberty, we can expect to be challenged in ways we have not even imagined. Expect a communication from me if your councils audit is not filed. DUES, DUES, DUES!! Council dues notices were sent April 1 and now second notices have been sent. Please, if you haven t already done so, pay your council dues to the state council. Just as your council depends on the timely collection of dues to operate your worthy programs, so too does the state council. Vivat Jesus! Ron Faust, reasurer Wisconsin State Council Diocesan raining and Awards Session Your attendance is requested, we have revised the Diocesan Meeting format in an effort to provide council leaders with the opportunity to be the best they can be. rainers have been recruited and educated to provide timely and valuable information for you to operate your council more effectively and efficiently. Your council participation in this event is an indication of your commitment to grow and strengthen the Knights of Columbus in Wisconsin. Grand Knights, Financial Secretaries, Deputy Grand Knights, Membership, Retention Coordinators and Recruiters, Program Directors, and Youth Directors are highly encouraged to attend. We find ourselves as Catholic Men under attack from every direction. We must be vigilant and united in fidelity to the teachings of Christ and his faithful servants, our Bishops. We gather together in common purpose for common goals. If we are not afraid to work together we can regain the strength that is necessary for the Knights of Columbus to defend our faith and our right to profess that faith in our homes and communities. 5 HELP-HELP-HELP YOUR HELP IS NEEDED FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS BE A FAN OF OPPORUNIY - MAKE DREAMS COME RUE As you know a resolution was passed at this years state convention that ALL Councils are encouraged to take an active part in supporting Special Olympics and that ALL Councils file Form 4584 each January. With that in mind we really need to step up the pace for the eam Wisconsin 2014 drive. We do need to raise these funds by June 1, We need ALL Councils to take an active part in this drive. All monies donated go completely to fund the cost of sending eam Wisconsin to the National Games in Newark, NJ in As of Aug. 1 st we have raised $35, towards our goal of $100, We will need to raise almost $65, in the next 23 months. We all have had dreams, and we have had the opportunity to make them come true. With the support of all members, these athletes dreams can also come true. here are many ways in which Councils can raise these funds. #1 Councils in strong financial position could take from the general fund. #2 Council Charity Fund monies can be used. #3 Council could host a fund raising event, Bingo, Card Party, Car Wash, Dinner, Raffle, Brat Fry, Breakfast, etc. #4 Contacting members directly for donations. Have an announcement in council newsletter regularly. Announcement in Church Bulletin. #5 Contacting local businesses for donations. #6 Applying to Foundations for grants. #7 or by any other means that you can think of. Remember that the Knights of Columbus Charities is a 501c3 non-profit, tax-exempt organization. Donations may be made through this. All checks are to be written out to WI Knights of Columbus Charities. Please send to me (with Council number). John Benisch, KC Special Olympics Coordinator 4645 State Hwy 80, Pittsville, WI (715) , johnb45@tds.net hank you for being a Fan of Special Olympics Fourth Degree News - Hot, Hot, and More his month is the last month for the reigning Masters of Wisconsin. Master Carl Duch and Master Jacob Grzywacz have successfully filled their two-two year terms as the Masters of Wisconsin. he term ends on August 31 and the newly appointed Masters will take over on September 1. When the new Masters are announced by Supreme, the assemblies will be notified by a letter to the Navigator and Membership of the appointees. Master Carl, Lady Pauline, Master Jacob, and Lady Donna would like to thank the membership for the support and hospitality that was extended to us upon our visits to your various assemblies. he support at Exemplifications was incredible. hank you. It is a bitter-sweet-moment leaving this great position, however new personal leads to changes and new ideas. I m sure that we have made a few that were great and some not. It all comes with the territory. hank you again! Another Form is due during August. he Annual Assembly Audit is due on August 1. We as Masters ask you to send these in as soon as possible because it will leave the new Master with the task of chasing delinquent assemblies to get all forms turned in. With this in mind there are still a few assemblies that haven t filled out the Fraternal Activities Survey Form - #1728 and Report of Officers Form - #186. Please respond to this request. he Honor Guard Squads in both Districts have been very active this summer with Church activities, parades, and funerals for members. We are the most visible and prestigious Degree of the Order of the Knights of Columbus. he image that we portray to the public is what they think of the Order as a whole. We need to be exemplary models for the Catholic Church. oday the Church has enough burdens to bear much less a group of Knights of Columbus that are scruffy representing our Catholic Ideas and Beliefs. Stand tall and look sharp as you are the Ambassadors of Our Church and Knighthood. A hird Degree Knight of Columbus with six months of membership, in good standing, 18 years of age, and a Citizen of the Country in which they reside may join the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. We do encourage all qualified members to become Fourth Degree members. It is a false idea that all Fourth Degree Members must become an Honor Guard Member. his honor is a personal decision. With that in mind you only need to qualify with the above guidelines and dress as prescribed: Basic Black uxedo, White uxedo Shirt with lay down collar, Black Bow ie, Black Cummerbund, and Black Shoes with Black Socks. 6 State Programs and Youth Development Brother Knights, Hopefully all of you are enjoying your summer and have made plans for your councils to excel in the next fraternal year. here are a few changes that you should be aware of. District Deputies will be taking a more active role in the tracking of your council s activities. Please be sure to make them aware of all activities that your council conducts, this would include a Memorial Mass and Benefit Night. I would love to see an increase in the number of councils who achieve the Complete Council Award, last year we had 41 councils accomplish this goal. Please take a moment to look at the qualifications for this, there is a copy in your council packets from the District Meetings. By now, I hope that all of you have had your meetings. here are several districts who have not submitted a District Meeting report. You should remember that your ootsie Roll and Charity Raffle checks are in your District packet. Be sure to distribute your ootsie Roll checks. Please act on this as soon as possible as these organizations need the money now. In addition the checks are only good for 90 days so if you do not get them out by the end of September, a new check will have to be issued. I would not want to explain to the State Deputy why this would be needed, I am certain that you would not either. Which programs is your council going to support and promote this year. Remember that you need a minimum of 3 youth activities for the Complete Council Award; although I hope you run all of them. We are actively promoting another event this year. he Substance Abuse Poster contest has made its way to our list. I have enclosed some information which hopefully will make it to the State web site soon. If you do not see it there go to the Supreme web site and you can order an information packet there. he dates for your PP&K and Soccer Challenge should hopefully be set very soon if they are not set already. Many of you may be using school facilities and it may be difficult to reach the necessary parties until school starts again. We have already set the State Competition Date for the PP&K and Soccer Challenge for October 13 at Columbus HS in Marshfield. Registration is at 10:30 and the event begins at 11:00 am. Check with your Diocesan Program Coordinator for your Diocesan competition date. I am hoping that you are in the planning stages for your Columbus Day Dinner. his is a great time to get your council members and wives together to talk about the accomplishments of last year. Needless to say everyone can always use a night out as well. Let s make this the best year yet in our long standing history of helping others, together we can accomplish much.
