Mary Bjork, Jessica Buck, Walt Richey, Jenni Shaller, Claire Spilseth On Saturday, October 20, 7:00 pm: Beyond Bars: Voices of Incarceration at Hamline University, Klas Center, Kay Fredericks Room Taylor Avenue, Saint Paul. Beyond Bars is a public reading of works written by inmates in Minnesota s correctional facilities who are part of the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop. Instructors, mentors, family members and friends will read on behalf of thirteen incarcerated writers, and two MPWW alumni will read their own work. It's sure to be a powerful evening! On Friday, October 26, 7:00 to 9:00 pm: Friday Night Film: A Stray at Carondelet Center, 1890 Randolph Ave, Saint Paul. Cost: $10.00 Learn more about everyday life within the Somali community in the Twin Cities and the challenges faced by refugees through an award-winning film written and directed by Musa Syeed. 7 F EE D M Y S TARVING C HILD REN On behalf of the PCC Love Your Neighbor and Valley Outreach teams, I want to thank everyone who signed up for the Feed My Starving Children packing event. 25 of us gathered with over 1,000 other people last night at the Woodbury HealthEast Sports Center. Our shift was one of 16 shifts (four shifts per day for four days) with an overall goal to pack 5,000,000 meals bags to be distributed to children around the world. The size and set up of the event was impressive. With 1,000 other people, dozens of packing stations, and a variety of packing, warehouse, and labeling jobs, the 25 of us weren't able to stay together as a unit. But we were able to meet other volunteers from all over the area. During our 2 1/2 hour shift, 1,050 people packed about 403,000 meals. This shift packed enough meals to give 1,100 children one meal a day for a year. Our 25 People's people packed enough meals to feed 25 children one meal a day for a year!! Thank you all. The sights and sounds of the evening were impressive. If you would like, please reply-all back with your thoughts on the experience. Again, thank you. Mark From FMSC: Wow. [During October] you hand -packed 3.3+ million meals for starving kids around the world! I have done this a few times but not on the scale it was done last night. What a diverse crowd! Our youngsters we're rocking out to the music. On a down note, while wearing a hairnet, I was recognized by a co-worker from Ecolab that I have not seen in over 16 years! How bad did I look when I worked there! Thank you so much for organizing this for us. ~Mindy Peters Because you showed up, 9,058 children will be able to eat a nourishing FMSC MannaPack Rice meal every day for an entire year. Our earlier experiences with this organization certainly weren't of the size of this one, but always so fulfilling to know our efforts are for such a great cause. Our backs got really strained, our sealer had a few glitches, my [scale] went on the fritz (but was replaced rather quickly), but we all kept trucking along and became a well oiled unit. 9 EVENTS We at BCAL try very hard to make Bayport a beautiful little community. One way we do that is by providing the funding for the lights you see around town during the holiday season. Please join us to light those up for the holiday season at our annual Lighting of the Green- December 5, The party will be at the Village Green (across the street from the Library). Like always, there will be food, fun, music, community building and, of course, Santa. Don't miss the fun! 9
