1 Rittman United Methodist Church 211 North Metzger Avenue Rittman, OH Return Service Requested Rittman United Methodist Church Points to Ponder - October 2017 Volume 48 - Issue No. 10 Ruthie Trigg, Pastor Sheila Stoll, Editor POINTS to PONDER October 2017 Vol. 48 No. 10 Ruthie Trigg, Pastor pastor@rittmanumc.org office@rittmanumc.org Contemporary 9:00am Sunday 10:00am Traditional 11:00am Help us accept each other as Christ accepted us; teach us as sister, brother, each person to embrace. Living Our Faith Through Word and Action Renew Your church, Lord, Your people in this land. Save us from cheap words and Self-deception in Your service. UPCOMING EVENTS October 26 Civic Day Luncheon In the power of Your Spirit October 28 Trunk or Treat Bonfire Transform us, and shape us October 29 Combined Worship By Your cross. I am the church! You are the Church! We are the Church Together! All who follow Jesus, all around the world. Yes, we re the Church together!

2 Who Can Do Ministry? Have you ever thought that only a pastor can do ministry? What is ministry anyway? It is another word for service. All throughout Jesus ministry He spoke to His disciples about loving and serving others. When we accept Jesus into our hearts and lives we should also be making a commitment to be His disciple. That means following His commandments. So what did Jesus teach us to do? We must love the Lord your God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) with all your heart, with all your being, and with all your mind. This first commandment was given by Jesus in Matthew 22:37 (CEB) And His second commandment is, You must love your neighbor as you love yourself, found in Matthew 22:39 (CEB). If we think about what we would want others to do for us, then we should do for others the same way! It would be great if we could even go a step further and do even better than we wish others would do for us! How much better is we would all start living these commandments all around the world? We would all be ministering to each other and not worry about what we want any longer. Our concentration would be on God and what God want us to do for Him and for others. We wouldn t have any time to worry about what others should be doing or worry about what they re not doing. We can all be doing ministry in the name of Jesus by following His ways and His words. Let s start right NOW! Blessings, Pastor Ruthie October 28 th 4:00-6:00 pm Bonfire following - Bring food to share. 3 --Diane Dee Bowlin, Roanoke, VA friend of Margaret Moedt, Cashiers, NC CONNECT Our elementary after-school program is going well! We currently have 22 regularly attending students. They have been enjoying stories about Creation, Noah s Ark, Adam and Eve, following rules and directions, creating beautiful things like words and music, and responsibility. Their craft time has been making a handprint poster, coloring pictures and ornaments, and creating wonderful button pictures. Game time has involved many varied games. They ve played Connect 4, Checkers, Memory, Go Fish, Jenga, Dominoes, LCR, and puzzles. There have been a variety of snacks and lemonade. Thanks to everyone who has donated snacks, games, puzzles, money, etc.!!! Also, thanks to the volunteers who have been with us each week to spend time with the children! We recently received a check from the Conference to help with expenses to continue this beneficial program for the rest of the school year. Thanks to Joanna Shankland and Judy Britton for attending the seminar about how to work with community schools, which made it possible for us to apply for this grant. When applying for this grant we shared how our church would be supporting this program in order to make it a reality to be able to serve the children of our community. Thank you again for helping to get the program started well! Snacks will be appreciated. It s nice to give the children a choice of snacks. They are enjoying the variety. We are still looking for people to volunteer at the elementary school occasionally during the school day to help where needed. Talk to Pastor Ruthie if you are interested in doing this, or if you have questions about this. Dear Lord Jesus, we pray for our world and the severe weather problems of the United States.

4 Volunteers are still needed to walk students from the Rittman Elementary School to the United Methodist church on Wednesday mornings. From 8:15-12:15 every Wednesday. Most walk two times a month. Application is available in the Narthex. Only requirement is to be fingerprinted at the school board office. There is no cost for this other than a little bit of time to get it done at the School Board office! Seminar on Belonging: Becoming an Inclusive Church This event will provide resources for caregivers, families, and congregations about ways in which persons with developmental differences may fully belong to and participate in the Body of Christ. Keynote speaker, Barbara J. Newman of the Christian Learning Center has written several books on creating a place of welcome in congregations for persons with disabilities, Saturday, October 21, :00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. At Ashland Theological Seminary $25 per person, includes lunch and resource book. Deadline is 10/11. Contact Pastor Ruthie is interested. If we have 5 people go, there is a $5 discount per person. 11 AM Workshop Choices Creating an Atmosphere of Welcome Equipping Strategies for Volunteers Frazzled to Supported 1:30 PM Workshop Choices How to Accommodate Worship for an Individual Caregiver/ Family Care Retreats 60 Tools in 50 Minutes Continued on next page

The pantry served 36 families, which is 87 people, with 1 new family. Thanks for the food donations. As always, new help is needed. If you can donate food for October, let Lynn T. know. Helps to put food in disposable pans - no clean up. Those pans can get food baked on. If you can t, it is okay. Today s new friend is tomorrow s family. Preschool Preschool is off to a great start. October is a busy month. We will be visiting Ramsier Dairy Farm and the Fire Department. Marty s Studio will be here to take the children s pictures. The Preschool is selling Malley s candy bars. If anyone wants to buy some, let us know. With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunder-storms tearing up our country from one end to another, and with threat of bird flu, swine flu, and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance? -- Jay Leno Choir Choir s first practice this last week was a time of telling each other why we sing in the choir. All are singing because they love the Lord Jesus and this church family. Betty Winchell, our beloved director, asked each member how many years each one has been a member. The total was over 300 years. The winner was Irene Hopton with 48 years. I ve Learned That. The less time I have to work with, the more things I get done. --Andy Rooney Sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand. -- Andy Rooney
