I took time during the Morning Service to point out part of the Vision for Lee Road and to address some of our challenges. One part of my Vision for Lee Road is the need go through a thorough process of Strategic Planning and Visioning. I have asked Dr. Bill Hightower to assist me as we put together a Coalition for Tomorrow. I want to ask each member of Lee Road to begin praying about this. The process of Strategic Planning can take many months or even a full year if done right. Let s join together in prayer and ask God to show us what He has in store for our church. From September 11 through October 16, 2016, Lee Road will take part in the I Am A Church Member Campaign. We will utilize six weeks for this campaign which will include the Sunday Morning Worship services and Sunday Evening (or weekday) small group meetings. I want every member of Lee Road to get involved in this special study. In fact, I am striving to see 150+ people enrolled in these small groups on in September and October. We will be using the book called I Am A Church Member which is written by Thom Rainer, President of Lifeway. The Cost of the book is $5.00 and will be available on Sundays, Wednesdays, and through the Church Office. Please visit the I am a Church Member Sign-Up table in the Sanctuary to participate in a small group. On October 23, 2016, Lee Road will hold a Homecoming Celebration as we celebrate Lee Road s 55 th Anniversary. We will have Sunday School, Morning Worship, and Dinner on the Grounds. We have invited former pastor, Dr. Hugh Cooper, to share the message in the Morning Worship service. Dr. Cooper has recently retired from Trinity Baptist Church near Charlotte, NC. He is delighted at this opportunity, and I am thrilled to have him back visiting Lee Road. Join me in helping spread the word about this exciting day. We would like to see all present members, former members, and friends of Lee Road with us on this special day. And, don t forget, with Dinner on the Grounds we need some Chicken and been Dumplings, Fried Chicken, Deviled Eggs (not for me), and Banana Pudding! May God give Lee Road 55 more great years of ministry and life change! Many of you have heard the announcement that our Lee Road Office Hours have changed. Effective August 22, Lee Road s official office hours became 8:30 AM 3:30 PM. During these hours, we have Office Staff present to assist you with needs and to answer the phones. From 3:30-5:00 PM, our Ministers remain available for you by appointment only, as their workday hours have not changed. No one will be in the main office during this time and the phones will not be answered. This change has made by our Personnel Committee to accommodate the needs of our Office Staff. I want to encourage everyone to help me inform the church family and let s work together to make these new office hours work for everyone. 5 Dear Church Family, O church member, where art thou? No, this isn t a Kendrick Brothers (producers of Facing the Giants, Fireproof, and War Room) sequel to George Clooney s O Brother, Where Art Thou? but it is a question that has been running through inquiring minds. What does it mean to be a church member? What are the responsibilities and expectations that a church member has? These questions, and more, will be explored during the upcoming study of I Am a Church Member that begins September 11. Even before we get to that study, the uncomfortable question remains. Where are you? Your church needs you to be here. Your church needs you to be steady. Your church needs your voice in the conversations about its strengths and weaknesses. What is being accomplished for the Kingdom when one missed week becomes two months? How is the church strengthened when members determine the best course of action is to withdraw from their church family? There are times when God uses circumstances and seasons of life to guide people to a different church. There are also times when members make that decision on their own. Over the summer my family had the opportunity to see some amazing lighthouses, each with an incredible history and impact on the areas they were built to light. Some lighthouses have withstood wars and hurricanes. Even though modern nautical navigation has become more advanced, the dependency on lighthouses remains. They also stand as landmarks to visitors with lighthouses like Charleston Light, Hunting Island, Tybee Island, and St. Augustine, to name a few, being instantly recognizable. The lights of many towers are constant messages to ships warning them of various conditions to help ensure safe passage. What would happen should one of those lights go out? It could mean great peril for those using them for guidance. Though they are battered by waves and weather, they stand. Though they need maintenance and care, they stand. If we were to think of our church as a lighthouse and the members as a watt of light, are you making it brighter with your presence or dimmer by your absence? Whether as a landmark that has been here for 55 years or a beacon in the storm of life, our desire should be to see our church shine as brightly as possible as a steady light in our community that helps guide people to the Savior. Will you lend your light?
