3 From the Valley not change much, but those additives that protect the engine and cooling system breaks down over time. We use a 5 year product offered by Honda automotive. Dennis checked it out a few years ago, and even got an OK from Stu Oltman. If your coolant is beyond the time it was meant for it s best to get it changed, and that s what we did. Dennis & Karen English Senior Chapter Directors November was a month of surprises. We were surprised it brought us cold weather so soon for one thing. Then there was the record breaking snowfall late in the month. Wow! It was wet and heavy. Snow stuck to the snow blower and shovels like glue. Just before that we had a few marginal days for riding, but we were trying to take advantage of the weather to get our Indian summer chores done. Right! What Indian summer! Be careful out there! The winter weather is upon us with a vengeance. We hope none of you were involved in accidents or sliding off the roads. As bikers we learn to drive defensively, so we re preaching to the choir to say, watch the other guy too. Dennis took the Gold Wing to Hawkeye Motorworks before things went to Hades. He had all the fluids changed, rear brake pads put on, and had the bike inspected by Wade, an experienced hand at Gold Wings. There is something going on that will have to wait until next season. One of the fork tube seals is beginning to leak. It was time to flush the old coolant out and replace it with new. Coolant really does All of our thanks to Rich and Donna Wesolowski for hosting the calendar planning session! We got it done, and we agree that it s a good calendar. Rich and Donna have a new Indian trike and it s beautiful. Our monthly social was on a chilly day, so no one rode their Gold Wing. It was right about freezing that morning. John and Yvette Moravec, our Iowa District Directors, paid us a visit. We are always happy to have them visit us! John and Yvette were among our most enthusiastic Chapter O people before moving to near Cedar Rapids. The big news coming out of the social is that Dennis decided to continue on as director of the chapter to keep the chapter going. It has been way too much FUN and will be more fun this next year with the chapter. Our goals in 2019 is to find Gold Wingers who want to share in our chapter fun by joining us, and to create another web site so people can find us. The chapter had a dinner get together at Gramma s in Walcott on the 18th, and we did not attend. We were told it was a good outing and the food delicious no surprise there. Our next event will be our Christmas dinner party on Saturday, December 8th at Hickory Gardens Restaurant, 3311 Hickory Grove Rd, Davenport, Iowa at 1 pm. Please note the time since it s not the same on the calendar. Please send your RSVP to Dennis , englishdj@mchsi.com no later than Thursday, December 6. We have some FUN games planned, and we look forward to seeing you! A reminder by will be sent out as usual. The chapter also has 4 photo albums that are here at the English household. We plan on bringing them to the Christmas party. They are yours to look at. A GWRRA chapter is a gathering of people who have rides and activities in common with each other on their motorcycles, especially their Gold Wings. Without YOU there is no FUN! Spur of the moment rides and/or activities can also be FUN! We wish you a very Merry Christmas, and a healthy and prosperous New Year! Dennis & Karen English Senior Chapter Directors
4 MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT always glad when our rides and gatherings include a stop at the ice cream shoppe. Rich & Donna Wesolowski Membershp Enhancement Thanksgiving is over and the trikes are put away for the season. It is truly a sad day to see them winterized and covered. We want to thank Dennis and Karen English for stepping up once again as Senior Chapter Directors. Without their support I am not sure where our chapter would be this coming. We had our annual ride planning meeting and really enjoyed the time together. We decided on doing some Iowa waterfall rides and the Coralville Lake ride as well. It sounds like fun and I am really looking forward to it. I will be riding the new Indian trike this year and really excited about it. It is a really fun trike to ride. Rich and I joined the Chapter at Grandma s for early afternoon dinner. Once again we had good food and good company. I sense a theme here where when our Chapter gets together we always have good food and good fun. I consider ice cream the best form of good food so am We will be playing games at our Christmas Party as well as enjoying good food and friends. Come on out and join us for a fun-filled afternoon. Last year we wrapped Johnnie Mohr and Rich Wesolowski up like Christmas trees so you never know what type of games Karen has up her sleeve. January brings us the Chapter gathering and the Illinois Winter Warm-up. We know when we live in Iowa or Northern Illinois that warming up in winter is really important. Let s join our brethren in Illinois and have a good time. We are also going to have a luncheon at Mickey s in Pleasant Valley the end of January. February brings us the annual Sweetheart Weekend in Nauvoo, IL and our very own chapter Valentime s dinner. We don t want to complete with all the folks out there so are going to meet at the new Bud s Skyline Inn in Davenport. Being the faithful Chapter members that they are, Terry and Faith Sorensen volunteered to go to Bud s Skyline Inn and check it out to make sure that it will fill the bill for us. Thank you Terry and Faith! Be safe over the Holidays and every other day of the year! If you know of anyone who is sick or injured, please contact Rich and I. We would like to send a card and let our members know that their Chapter O friends and family are thinking about them Please send an to: WESOLOWSKI77@AOL.COM Or call us at:
5 Karen s Kitchen My baking odyssey Sweet Potato, Ham and Corn Chowder Ingredients: 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 1 1/4 cups chopped yellow onion 1 cup peeled and diced carrots 1 cup diced celery 1 cup chopped bell pepper 1 tablespoon minced garlic (3 cloves) 2 15-ounce cans low-sodium chicken broth 3 cups 1/2-inch peeled and diced sweet potatoes, about 1 large 1 teaspoon dried basil 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme salt and freshly ground black pepper 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, diced into 1-tablespoon pieces 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 3 cups whole milk 1 1/2 cups diced cooked hickory smoked ham 1 1/2 cups frozen corn 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese 3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley Instructions: 1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add in onions, carrots and celery; saute 4 minutes. 2. Add in bell pepper and garlic; saute 1 minute longer. 3. Add in chicken broth, sweet potatoes, basil and thyme; season with salt and pepper to taste. 4. Bring mixture to a boil then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until sweet potatoes and vegetables are tender, about minutes. 5. Meanwhile, melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add in flour and cook, whisking constantly, 1 minute. 6. Pour milk into flour mixture, stirring constantly, and bring mixture to a light boil; remove from heat. 7. Stir ham and corn into soup once veggies are tender and heat through, about 2 minutes. Stir milk mixture into soup. Stir in cheddar cheese and parsley. Serve warm.
6 FROM THE DESK OF THE IOWA DISTRICT EDUCATOR Grey Hayes Since this article gets distributed through the chapter newsletters and each chapter has a different schedule for when they send out their newsletters, my topic this month may seem out of date. But, as I am writing this Thanksgiving is just over a week away so that is where my thoughts are. This is my give thanks article. Though it may be inspired by Thanksgiving, giving thanks is really appropriate every day of the year. I am thankful for having another safe riding season, for the riding I do with my friends, for their safe riding, for the number of friends I have met through GWRRA, for the opportunity to serve GWRRA, for all the volunteers that help GWRRA to be the great organization that it is. I am grateful for our members who have provided support to people in our group that are dealing with a variety of issues. I am very thankful for the people who have served our country and who protect or assist our communities, often with great personal sacrifice. I am thankful for people who do volunteer work to make our communities better. I am thankful for living in this great country. I am thankful for having a great family, for there is nothing more important than having people that you love. And I want to thank each of you for your support of your chapter, our district and for our whole organization, making it all fun. There are so many things for which to be thankful. Since riding season has pretty much wrapped up I want to wish everyone to stay safe even when not riding. I made my monthly trip to Cedar Rapids today and passed by several vehicular accidents. The worst was a four car accident that was just. short of where a semi was parked along the shoulder due some mechanical problem and had the orange triangular signs behind it. I am guessing that maybe a couple of the cars were in driving in the left lane and when one of the cars in the right lane was moving over to the left, as they should because of the truck pulled over along the side of the road, that they may have failed to check their blind spot before changing lanes, hitting the car in the left lane and causing the cars behind, that were probably driving too close, to hit each other. This is my guess but it seems a likely scenario. If so, it is easy to see how this could have been prevented. Then, on my way home on I-80, two cars in front of me made a normal pass on the left of a truck. As they moved back to the right lane the second car kept moving further right onto the right shoulder before hitting a guardrail scraping the side of her car. She almost lost control of her car but recovered. As I passed her I could tell how shook up she was. Her eyes wide open, hair seemed to be frizzed out like in a cartoon, and fear on her face. Was she distracted by something like her phone, under the influence or maybe falling asleep? I have no idea but all are possibilities. I was worried that she might overcorrect her steering and come over to hit me. There are so many things that can happen to us when driving. It just shocked me seeing these as well passing another 2 car accident, seeing a deer in the middle of the road that had been hit, and seeing a semi that had drove off the highway and ended up in a field. It isn t even winter conditions yet! It was just a nice sunny day. My message is that we never know what is going to happen when we are riding 2 or 3 or 4 or more wheels. However, it can be simple mistakes that we make that can cause bad things to happen. Just a second or two of letting our guard down can have bad consequences. It takes constant vigilance to stay safe. Complacency and over confidence are going to lead to trouble. Enough of the downer stuff. I am wishing all of you a safe and happy holiday season. Wishing you safe travels, Greg Hayes hayeswing@gmail.com
