For the members, family and friends of the Downey Adventist Church Go Ye Therefore by Cary Fisher When the Seventh-day Adventist Church came into its existence, the movement had a clear mission plan.

1 For the members, family and friends of the Downey Adventist Church Go Ye Therefore by Cary Fisher When the Seventh-day Adventist Church came into its existence, the movement had a clear mission plan. Early Adventist pioneers took to heart the words of Jesus when he said, Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:14), and made it their purpose to spread the Gospel to all ends of the world. There was a recent study by the Pew Research Center that found the Seventh-day Adventist Church as the most racially and ethnically diverse group in all of the United States. We certainly can credit the vision of the early church for this claim. As missionaries traveled throughout the world their impact has created most of this diversity as converts from other countries have migrated to United States. That is why we can go to an Adventist Church and see people from all kinds of cultures from around the world, or why there can be multiple language churches in any part of the U.S.. Here at Downey, we have been obviously blessed with this mission for Adventism. If you look around our sanctuary on any given Sabbath, you will see how diverse our congregation is, and that is something to truly be grateful for. Since also we have been studying in our Sabbath school quarcontinued on page 2 Your Role We must remember throughout our lives that in God s sight there are no little people and no little places. Only one thing is important: to be consecrated persons in God s place for us, at each moment. We re asking everyone to bring a favorite dish from your culture as well. International potlucks are a wonderful way to sample many different dishes. We are going to try to compile some simple counts of how many different heritages are represented at the Downey Adventist Church. (cont. from page 1) 2 terly about missionaries of the Bible, we are going to spend the Sabbath of September 26 to commemorate Adventist missions, and celebrate the different cultures that make up the Downey-Florence Seventh-day Adventist Church. The Sabbath will be filled with missionary stories within our church and it will conclude with an international potluck that will consist of food from all over the world. I hope you are able to share your culture with us on that special day. My goal for the weekend is to remind us that Jesus great commission of go ye therefore is a mission for all of us to consider. We can be missionaries right here at home. We just have to let the Holy Spirit to continue to intervene in our lives so our love for God will compel us to love others. September Sermon Calendar September 5 - The Rest of Our Lives - As we celebrate Labor Day weekend, this Sabbath s message will be on how to truly have a rest that can only be given by God. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his (Hebrews 4: 9,10). September 12 - Who is in Charge? - The Bible reveals that Christ has authority over all things as the Bible says, he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy (Colossians 1:18). With all that being said, have you allowed Christ to be the authority of your life? September 19 - The Selfish Prayer. Bill Aumack will share the message. Sometimes our prayers become very selfcentered. We ll look at a very selfish prayer in the Bible and see what lessons can be learned and applied to our prayer life. September 26 - To the Ends of the Earth - This Sabbath will be a special reflection on the missionary work of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. As Luke wrote, For this is what the Lord has commanded us: I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth (Acts 13:47), God has called our church and each of us to share his love with others. Taste & Inspiration September 2015 Zippity Dooo Daaaa Orzo Salad Ingredients 1/2 cups olive oil for salads 1 teaspoons lime zest 1/4 cups lemon juice 2 tablespoons fresh basil finely chopped 4 garlic

chopped small 1 large red bell peppers chopped small 1 1/2 cups tomatoes seeded, and chopped 3 tablespoons capers 3/4 cups Kalamata olives pitted and quartered 1/2 red onions finely chopped 1

5 Taste & Inspiration September 2015 Zippity Dooo Daaaa Orzo Salad Ingredients 1/2 cups olive oil for salads 1 teaspoons lime zest 1/4 cups lemon juice 2 tablespoons fresh basil finely chopped 4 garlic cloves finely chopped 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1 to taste salt to taste 1 to taste pepper freshly ground, to taste 1 lbs Orzo pasta 8 ounces feta cheese crumbled 1 large orange bell peppers chopped small 1 large red bell peppers chopped small 1 1/2 cups tomatoes seeded, and chopped 3 tablespoons capers 3/4 cups Kalamata olives pitted and quartered 1/2 red onions finely chopped 1 tablespoons fresh oregano finely chopped 2 green onions chopped Directions 1. First cook your Orzo pasta per package directions, cooking until al dente, and drain. 2. In a medium sized, nonreactive bowl, gradually beat together the lime zest, lemon juice, salad quality olive oil, basil, garlic, and mustard until an emulsion forms. 3. Then season the oil mixture with salt and pepper to taste. 4. Mix your pasta, feta cheese, peppers, tomatoes, capers, Kalmata olives, and chopped red onion together in a bowl. 5. Pour the vinaigrette over the pasta mixture and mix to combine. 6. Add oregano and green onions, toss, and then add extra salt and pepper to your tastes. 7. Chill salad for 1-2 hours for best results. 8. You can make this in the morning and even serve it in the evening, but don t save it for too long (you won t have leftovers I promise LOL). There is going to be a meeting for our small group leaders after the International Potluck on Sept. 29th. = A Prayer for Uncertain Times An hour before the 9/11 terrorist attacks, pastor and author Stan Purdum was reading Psalm 66, which includes the words, We went through fire and through water; yet you have brought us out to a spacious place (v. 12, NRSV). After watching the destruction, Purdum composed a prayer that remains relevant today, as terrorism and threats often make peace seem more specious than spacious : O God of heaven and earth, who s bigger than nations and factions, be with us as we live through times of terror, despair and danger. Be the strength of people who ve been touched personally by disaster. Come with healing to those who are injured. Be the eternal rest of those who ve died. Be the energy, compassion and fortitude of those who must pick through the wreckage. Grant our leaders courage and a double portion of your wisdom. The day of universal brotherhood seems farther off than ever, O God, but help us not despair of trying to accomplish it. Strengthen our faith. In Jesus name. Amen. =
