1 June 2014 Jewish Community Housing Corporation of Metropolitan New Jersey B nai B rith Celebrated Older Americans Month in May Never Too Old To Play! May was Older Americans Month, and it was the perfect opportunity to show our appreciation for the older adults in our communities and recognize the contributions and achievements that they have made in our society. Remember You re Never Too Old To Play!!! We enjoyed entertainment by the children from Temple Adath Shalom on May 8. The children had a wonderful time talking with the residents,. The children asked the residents where they were from and the residents were more than happy to talk about their childhoods.

5 MINDFULNESS Mindfulness is a 6 week program run by our Social Worker Marnie & her co-worker Beth. They talk about all things concerning the mind, how to train yourself to relax, to think about things in a positive way and many more outstanding ways to help you concentrate and relax. There are 3 programs in June, on the 6th, 20th & 27th. All the residents that are attending are finding this program very helpful and stimulating. Come!, join the group for an outstanding experience! BRYNA S CORNER I hope you all had a Happy Mother s Day. Hooray for June, the weather has been wonderful so far, the flowers are blooming, the weather has been sunny and dry. And talking about flowers, children from Golda Och Academy will be coming to our building on Thursday, June 12 to plant a beautiful flower bed across from the bench that s under the tree near the driveway. While you are sitting under the peaceful shade of the tree, you will enjoy looking at the beautiful flowers. Carolyn will be posting a flyer to let you know what time they will be here. I d like everyone to know that the lunch program on Thursdays is a big hit. Everyone says that the food is excellent! They re giving so many compliments that I called the chef, Angie, to let her know. She s very happy that they re so happy! This month we celebrate Shavuot on June 4 & 5. Shavuot is the Hebrew word for weeks and refers to the Jewish festival marking the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, which occurs seven weeks after Passover. Shavuot, like many other Jewish holidays, began as an ancient agricultural festival that marked the end of the spring barley harvest and the beginning of the summer wheat harvest. In ancient times, Shavuot was a pilgrimage festival during which Israelites brought crop offerings to the Temple in Jerusalem. Today, it is a celebration of Torah, education, and actively choosing to participate in Jewish life. CHAGSAMEACH! Page 5
6 A LETTER FROM THE RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION CO-PRESIDENT These are the beautiful days we longed for all winter! Remember the ice and snow during what seemed an interminable winter only a few months ago? Take a deep breath of springtime and enjoy the flowers and new leaves and the warm, sunny days! One morning I saw a beautiful full-grown doe feeding in the area beyond the back fence. A sure sign of spring! Our activities coordinator, Carolyn, is busy arranging a catered cook-out for us to enjoy on Tuesday, June 24, we can bring family members to enjoy the day with us! Plan to enjoy this time together! On June 14th Flag Day-we honor the symbol of our country. The flag is precious with meaning and encouragement and strengthening to us all especially to our service men and women, who fought and stood guard against the evil that would come against us. We have remembered them on Memorial Day; now we honor the flag they fought under. Sunday, June 15th is Father s Day really plural, Fathers Day. We think of fathers as symbols of strength, wise counsel and protection. Some of us have had others fill this roll in our lives, but to all fathers natural and surrogate, we say thank you and we appreciate you! Be assured, you are very important to us! Carolyn has planned a Father s Day luncheon on Monday, June 16th at 12:30, come and enjoy the day and remember our On June 21st we welcome the first day of summer! Remember not to complain about the heat! Just enjoy the comfortable facilities we live in here and all the activities that are available and enjoy each other with courtesy and patience. We want to make life as good as we can for those around us, as well as ourselves. Remember the congregate lunches/dinners every Thursday of the month, thanks to management. The Residents Association is having a ziti/pizza dinner on Thursday, July 3rd at 5:00 p.m. in celebration of July 4th. A poster will be put on the bulletin board for sign-up. The next meeting of our Residents Association is scheduled for Tuesday, June 17th at 7:00 p.m. Get to know your neighbors! Refreshments as always! Page 6
