During the past month, we have exemplified two new brothers in the first degree and excepted several more transfers to our council. This is all due to you, our active and welcoming members! Thanks to brother Steve Jackson, and all the knights who rode our parish bus to Washington, D.C. to march in support of life. If you ve never been able to make the trip, I encourage you to make it a priority next year. It s truly an inspiring experience you won t soon forget. Be sure to come by and see our newly redecorated hall. Several of your brother knights painted and put together new awards and photo displays that are worth checking out. Our meeting and social nights are on the first and third Thursdays of every month, and I hope to see you all there. Vivat Jesus! Brother Rich Page 1

3 THE MCGIVNEY PRAYER: God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue His work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. 9 During the Supreme Convention last August in Baltimore, the Knights of Columbus launched its 18th Marian Prayer Program this year featuring an icon of Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians, created by Italian artist Fabrizio Diomedi. The icon was recently blessed by Pope Francis himself. Each state deputy will host an icon and share it with local councils throughout their jurisdictions. The icon will serve as the centerpiece for prayer services intended to raise awareness of the plight of Christians persecuted for their faith and to stand in prayerful solidarity with them. As the icons travel on their individual journeys, we encourage Knights to track their experiences by posting photos to Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #FollowingMary. The Supreme Council will share many of these photos on its own social media accounts in an effort to unite Christians around the world in prayer. The prayer program is the latest in a series of efforts undertaken by the Knights of Columbus to aid those who suffer for their faith. Since its inception in 2014 the Christian Refugee Relief Fund has raised and distributed close to $20 million to help feed and clothe needy families in the Middle East and to resettle and rebuild villages destroyed by ISIS. Regina Mundi s turn will be later in the spring. Page 9

10 Different church buildings serve different purposes. Basilicas are traditionally large, rectangular churches that have an historical and spiritual importance, such as Saint Peter s Basilica in Rome. The ancient Romans originally used them to house kings or judges. Later, Christians used the style for places to worship God, the King of Kings. The Pope can raise important Church buildings of historical and spiritual significance, for example a cathedral, to the status of minor basilica. When you visit, you will know that you are in a minor basilica if the conopaeum (a red-and-yellow umbrella), the Vatican Seal (Papal Crown and crossed keys),and a special bell are on display. A cathedral is the chief church in a diocese and is where the bishop presides. The name Cathedral comes from the word cathedra, which is Latin for the chair. This refer to the Bishop s chair, which represents his authority. A Shrine is a sacred place where a saint s relic is preserved. an apparition Has taken place, or a place to encourage a specific belief or devotion. The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia is both A cathedral and a Basilica. It may also be considered a Shrine because it contains the tomb of Saint Katherine Drexel. Page 10

11 On January 18, 2019, Steve Jackson, Rich Spencer, Rich Gathercole, Jim Brennen, Steve Clark, George Benson, Fred May, and Deacon Umile joined Father Mke and other members of Assumption BVM parish on a bus to Washington DC to participate in the March for Life. Page 11

12 The March passed by the Washington Monument, The Capitol Building, and the Supreme Court ( The home of Roe V Wade) Those people who were not able to do the walk went to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception for a day of prayer. Page 12

29 Happy New Year, First, I would like to congratulate Regina Mundi Council and Mary Queen of Angels Council for recently receiving the Star and Double Star Council awards respectively. Great job Brothers! Second, I hope you all had a Happy New Year. With that, did you make a new year s resolution? New years can be a time we look forward and set out a plan to better position ourselves for the future. We normally think about getting to the gym more, walking more, eating better and while I hope we all do that, we also need to take an in-depth look at our financial health. The good news is that the Knights of Columbus can help. Our complimentary no-fee needs analysis is the way I accomplish this. Maybe you ve changed jobs, retired, have kids in college, or have had another major life changing event. I specialize in the areas of -retirement protection (Now that you ve built your 401k, how will you protect it?) - Insurance protection (Do you have enough? Maybe you have too much? ) - Long term care analysis (There is a 70% chance a couple over 65 will need it) - Special needs analysis -reducing risk through creating an income stream that you cannot outlive By going through the process of a needs analysis, I generate solutions that fit your needs, not anyone else s. I look forward to hearing from you so that I can provide this valuable service to you, today. Some of you have a financial advisor that you work with we can provide different ideas that can work in tandem to what your goals are. Fraternally yours, Bill Page 29
