We had a great Superbowl Party that was held on Sunday February 4 th at our Hall. It was a full house as we had 80 people in attendance. A huge thank you to Ron Ade who successfully ran this event for us and to Bill Quigley who was his side-kick this year as Ron was a bit under the weather. Bill donated the hotdogs and buns for us and worked tirelessly through most of the day with Ron s wife, Maureen. Thank you to all who donated food and snacks. BK Sweeney s in Bethpage were extremely generous and reduced their cost of the 5 full trays of food that we ordered to a fraction of their typical cost. As a token of thanking them, we will be planning a happy hour trip there as we had last year. The date is Tuesday April 10 th and the time is from 4PM to?. More on that next month as a reminder! We had another successful Irish dance lesson at our Hall on Sunday February 18 th and, even though I was in Virginia with Maureen visiting our family, I heard it was a lot of fun. The Lenten fish dinner run by Ed McGlade and Ken Ferguson on Friday February 23 rd had a great turnout. The food there could have fed another 25 people [miracle of the fishes?]. Nice job Ed and Ken! I ran a craft beer night on Saturday night February 24 th with live music played by Gabe Hickey and Pat Jordan from 8PM to 11PM. They played for free knowing it was a fundraising event for our Hall and it was great. I picked up the three torpedo kegs from Barnshed Brewing earlier in the day and a special thanks to Mike Greene who helped me set them up and to Ed McGlade who figured out how the fittings needed to be positioned so they could be hooked up. Not knowing what kind of turnout to expect, I was shocked by the end of the night when the last arrivals came in and upped the body count to 51!!!! On top of that, there were 23 Hibernian members present 7 ladies and 16 men. The other 28 people were family and friends. Thanks too to Ken Ferguson who bartended the entire night and stayed afterwards to shut down I left with Maureen around 1:45AM and there were still a dozen people there. All who attended, members and nonmembers, said it was a great night. I intend to do this again later in the year most likely in October. (continued on page 4)

3 S t a r s & S h a m r o c k s In God We Trust P a g e 3 C h a p l a i n s C o r n e r In my column for February I quoted from a source that provided information on LENT. The following introduced the subject: The word Lent itself is derived from the Anglo- Saxon words lencten, meaning Spring and lentctentid, which literally means not only Springtide but also was the word for March, the month in which the majority of Lent falls. So this month the question posed to myself is: When does SPRING begin? How you define the first day of Spring depends on whether you follow the astronomical or meteorological seasons. This year, spring will take place between March 20 and June 21, if you use the astronomical method. But it starts slightly earlier, between March 1 st and May 31 st, if you follow the meteorological calendar. In either case, St. Patrick s Feast Day will still be celebrated on Saturday, March 17 th. Thank God for small favors. Why did I bring this whole subject to your attention? My real reason In reviewing the Gospel readings for the month of March (meteorological spring time), I discovered that all four readings speak of the forthcoming death of our Lord Jesus Christ. The following lists the readings for the month. March 4 th March 11 th - March 18 th - March 25 th - Jn 2:13-25 Jesus answered and said to them, Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up Jn 3: For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, Jn 12:20-33 Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, --- Palm Sunday The Passion of our Lord. Take some time during the next four weeks to reflect on each Sunday s gospel readings. I believe that if we take some time to do so, we will better prepare ourselves for the great feast of Easter, April 1 st. Without the Resurrection of our Lord, our Faith is meaningless. Peace to all for the Month of March(ing) Deacon Frank Our First Right - Right for Life Right to Life 30 Million women executed. That's the number of dead since The next time somebody tells you abortion is a woman's health issue, remind them of this. Half those killed are women. MARCH FOR LIFE This year was the first time a Vice President was at the Podium This year was the first time a sitting President addressed the Rally. Next year, will you be there? Save the Date: March for Life Friday January 18, Love them both, John Nolan Pro Life Chairman AOH Div 15
4 P a g e 4 S t a r s & S h a m r o c k s The Galway Cathedral. The Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas is more commonly known as Galway Cathedral. This site, on the banks of the Corrib River was originally the site of the old city jail.which was bilt in1810. Work began on the building of the Cathedral in 1958 and it was completed in 1965 making this the last great stone Cathedral to be built in Europe. The Galway Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Galway, Kilmacduagh & Kilfenora. The word "cathedral" is derived from the Greek "kathedra... Galway Cathedral Recitals is an international series of concerts of classical music which has taken place in Galway Cathedral each July and August since If you haven t yet notified Brian Farrell that you want to come with us on the bus to the NYC St. Patrick s Day Parade, please do so quickly as we have now opened up reservations to neighboring divisions. As mentioned previously, the cost for the roundtrip ride is $30 and is limited to 50 people and includes refreshments on the bus. For the parade, Business Dress Code is still the requirement.
