1 THE MAGNETO Volume 54 #7 July, 2011 President s Message Over the last few days we have all been reminded of what summertime in Virginia is really like. As we take advantage of the warm weather to travel about to various old-car interest events across the state, we don t always think of how big our old-car hobby is. Earlier this month I ran across this internet blog that I was unaware of; so, I thought I d bring to your attention that July 8 is, in fact, Collector Car Appreciation Day: Senate Designates July 8 Collector Car Appreciation Day National Collector Car Appreciation Day was created as a day for Americans to celebrate the importance of our nation s automotive heritage. Thousands of collectors and enthusiasts will gather at car cruises, parades and other events across the country to enjoy America s great car culture and recognize the vital importance of protecting it. Last year the United States senate helped launch the first National Collector Car Appreciation Day by passing senate resolution 513, in order to promote the automotive restoration industry and its continuous projects and programs. Together, with the recognition and support of people like you, they help keep America s love affair with the automobile alive and well. Now that we all know about July 8, perhaps we should begin to expect the appropriate attention to this day and the owners of collector cars. Maybe Hallmark will develop greeting cards for our spouses to give to us along with our favorite foods on each July 8. This might lead to receiving gifts, such as cars, car-care items and new garages to store them in. (Just dreaming of how this holiday could be best promoted.) It never hurts to set your sights high; and, if you re going to dream, dream big! J Brown, President Historic Fredericksburg Region, Inc. My Father always told me that he served in the Army with Hollywood film star, Bruce Cabot. Bruce Cabot played Jack Driscoll in the original 1933 version of King Kong. He was the guy that ran all the way up the Empire State Bldg to rescue Fay Ray. I think that s Cabot on the right end of the seated row. I m not sure, and my dad is not here to tell me.
