The cold and wind will end soon and few are looking forward to the warmer weather more than me, but that's a short list. We started off with our annual St. Patrick s Day Dance/Dinner. Many thanks to my co-chairman Joe Campbell, who did a fantastic job. In addition, our Journal chairman, Frank Ryan, yet again, surpassed himself in putting the Journal together. Bill Quigley and Mary Beggan were excellent choices for Man of the Year and Woman of the Year, respectively. Both awards were well deserved for a lifetime of service to our order. A hearty congratulations to them both. Well Done! Thanks to everyone who made the trip on St. Patrick s Day to march with the Division in the New York City parade. The wind nearly got the best of us but we all persevered. Thank you to those that made the trip and stayed at the reviewing stand until Tara Pipes and Drums and the Division passed. Great supporting effort, thank you very much! The Hall opened at 2:00pm for a celebration and to welcome back the marchers. I want to thank all the ladies who made the sandwiches and Jim Wall for handling the bar. On a sad note, we held a Hibernian Wake for Robert (Bob) O'Rourke. We had a nice showing of support from the men's and the ladies divisions. Thank you Deacon Frank Flood for leading us in prayer. This was the first time we used the new Hibernian Prayers which are a welcomed change as they are much more personable than the previous edition. Please remember our members who are sick in your thoughts and prayers. So far, April looks like a quite month as compared to March but after Lent we will start the 300 Club. If you have not gotten your ticket please see Jeff Stark down at the Hall. Before you know it we will be into May and have our annual Memorial Day BBQ and Stickball Game with the Marines. Looking forward to it! See you all down at the hall. John J. 2 P a g e 2 S t a r s & S h a m r o c k s The March madness is over, the Division survived another St. Patrick s season. Again, this year we had a bus into the City and had a decent amount of people march up the Avenue. It was not like the old days when Division 15 marched 100 people both mem and ladies up the Avenue. But we were well represented. A big hand for Brian Farrell on a job well done as bus chairman and also our President John Nolan, and his elves on a great St. Patrick s Dance. If you M i k e s T i d b i t s G r e e n B e r e t C l u b N e w s Things are going well. Rentals are coming along so if you are thinking of reserving the hall give me a call. We will be opened on Good Friday. No Talent night is Saturday, April 18 mark it on your calendar. That s a fun night, you don t want to miss it. Anyone interested in performing see Frank Ryan. He is our Master of Ceremonies. missed it shame on you. Congratulation to Frank and Anne Ryan on their 60th wedding Anniversary. I have a little trivia for you. The average age for the 8 members of the color guard that marched this season is 76.2/3 years old. We have 2 members that are 85 and the youngest is 63. That s about it for now. See you at the next meeting on Wednesday April 8th. There will be elections in June for 3 positions on the Green Beret board anyone interested in running come to a meeting and submit your name. Remember you must have taken all your degrees to become a Trustee, more about that next month. Last month s Maintenance winner was again Pat Brennan $75.00 Mens Dues Please send 2015 annual dues: $45 ($40 if paid by March 1st) Joe Campbell 85 Grand Ave Green Beret Trustees Chair: Michael Greene Treas. Jack Ryan House/Bar: Ed McGlade Entertainment: Ken Ferguson To Rent the Hall please call: To be notified of wakes please Ken Ferguson at shamrocken47@verizon.net T a r a P i p e s a n d D r u m s March marching season is over. After marching in parades in all different types of weather a short rest is what the band needs. We will be doing a little league parade sometime in April, and then we are gearing up for Memorial Day weekend and the summer fire department parade season. As always we are looking to grow the band - anyone interested please see Ed McGlade for details. The band generally runs the annual uniform raffle around this time we have decided to move it to later in the year. Congratulations to Brother Mark Waldmann on his first trip up fifth avenue as a piper. The band is getting ready to celebrate it s 40th anniversary next year. If anyone has any ideas or thoughts on what we could do to make it a special year long event please let me know. Donald MacDonald from the Isle of Skye went to study at an English university and was living in the hall of residence with all the other students there. After he had been there a month, his mother came to visit him (no doubt carrying reinforcements of tatties, salt herring, oatmeal and whisky). "And how do you find the English students, Donald?" she asked. "Mother," he replied, "they're such terrible, noisy people. The one on that side keeps banging his head on the wall and won't stop. The one on the other side screams and screams all night." "Oh Donald! How do you manage to put up with these awful noisy English neighbours?" "Mother, I do nothing. I just ignore them. I just stay here quietly, playing my bagpipes." Ed McGlade Band Master

3 S t a r s & S h a m r o c k s In God We Trust P a g e 3 Dear Brothers, C h a p l a i n s C o r n e r Thanks to our State President, Jim Burke, I was recently given a copy of a booklet titled: Chaplain s Handbook which was prepared by Rev. Thomas O Donnell, AOH National Chaplain. The text was edited by Mike McCormack, the National Historian. Jim informed me that he was unaware that such a publication existed and he believed that I might find the document both informative and useful. me with a copy of the handbook, that I used the new format and most importantly, that the members found it more prayerful and meaningful. What troubles me about Wake Services is the following: The main core of members honoring a deceased member usually consists of Past Presidents, members of the Color Guard and the current Officers of our Division. Where, one may ask, are the remaining members of the Division.. We all have an obligation to our deceased brothers to honor them at the Wake Service and not just leave it to a small cadre of current and past Officers. Among the many sections included in the Handbook is the following: AOH Wake Service for a Deceased Brother. On Monday evening, Peace to all and Have a Blessed Easter, March 16th, I had the opportunity of leading the Division s wake service for our recently deceased brother Robert Bob: O Rourke. I was tempted to use the standard service we have used for decades but then decided Peace to everyone, that evening to present to our members this new and revised Wake service. Following the service, the brothers remarked that they felt more Deacon Frank involved, more prayerful and recommended that we use this new formula in the future... On a personal level, I was pleased that Jim had furnished Right to Life A.2129 IN RELATION TO LEGALIZING PHYSICIAN-ASSISTED SUICIDE (introduced by Assemblyman Rosenthal) Action: Sample message. Physician-assisted suicide must not become legal in New York State. A-2129 would add a section to the Public Health Law to allow physicians to prescribe lethal doses of medication for the express purpose of ending a patient's life. I urge you to work to stop this bill. Please reply as to action you will take. Thank you. Contact the following three: Governor Andrew M. 4 P a g e 4 S t a r s & S h a m r o c k s Did You Know An bhfuil fhios agat: Pádraig Pearse ( ): Pádraig Pearse was born in Dublin on November 10, Educated on scholarship at the Royal University where he studied law and was later called to the bar. He joined the Gaelic League on leaving school and was committed to the revival of the Irish Language and to educational reform. Initially he regarded the latter as more important than political independence. In 1908 he established St.Enda s, an independent Irish-speaking school for boys in Dublin. Up to 1912, Pearse had appeared on home rule platforms. He joined the Irish Volunteers at its foundation in November 1913 and gained rapid promotion to its headquarters staff. His speeches at the commemoration of Wolfe Tone s death (1913) and at the graveside of O Donovan Rossa (1915) impressed those who were secretly organising the Easter Rising. In May 1915 he was made a member of the IRB Military Council. Pearse played an active role in the subsequent preparations: arranging for the landing of German arms; negotiating with Connolly; instructing and sending despatches to the volunteers. On April 23, the Military Council appointed him Commandant-General of the Army of the Irish Republic and President of the Provisional Government to be proclaimed next day. During Easter week Pearse served at the rebellion headquarters, the GPO. With a calm confidence, he offered encouragement, addressing the men to sustain morale and on Easter Monday, April 24th, he stood outside the General Post Office (GPO)to declare the beginning of the 1916 Rising, by reading The Proclamation : Poblacht na heireann. Pearse was court-martialed at Richmond Barracks on 2nd May. At his trial he pleading that the lives of the men should be spared and only he himself executed. He was found guilty, sentenced to death and was transferred to Kilmainham Gail that evening. Pearse faced the firing squad on May 03,1916, at the age of 36. He was buried at Arbour Hill Barracks alongside Thomas Clarke and Thomas MacDonagh, who had also been executed that day. Mise Eire. 6 S t a r s & S h a m r o c k s P a g e 6 Easter 1916 Easter 1916 William Butler Yeats I HAVE met them at close of day Coming with vivid faces From counter or desk among grey Eighteenth-century houses. I have passed with a nod of the head Or polite meaningless words, Or have lingered awhile and said Polite meaningless words, And thought before I had done Of a mocking tale or a gibe To please a companion Around the fire at the club, Being certain that they and I But lived where motley is worn: All changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born. That woman's days were spent In ignorant good-will, Her nights in argument Until her voice grew shrill. What voice more sweet than hers When, young and beautiful, She rode to harriers? This man had kept a school And rode our winged horse; This other his helper and friend Was coming into his force; He might have won fame in the end, So sensitive his nature seemed, So daring and sweet his thought. This other man I had dreamed A drunken, vainglorious lout. He had done most bitter wrong To some who are near my heart, Yet I number him in the song; He, too, has resigned his part In the casual comedy; He, too, has been changed in his turn, Transformed utterly: A terrible beauty is born. Hearts with one purpose alone Through summer and winter seem Enchanted to a stone To trouble the living stream. The horse that comes from the road. The rider, the birds that range From cloud to tumbling cloud, Minute by minute they change; A shadow of cloud on the stream Changes minute by minute; A horse-hoof slides on the brim, And a horse plashes within it; The long-legged moor-hens dive, And hens to moor-cocks call; Minute by minute they live: The stone's in the midst of all. Too long a sacrifice Can make a stone of the heart. O when may it suffice? That is Heaven's part, our part To murmur name upon name, As a mother names her child When sleep at last has come On limbs that had run wild. What is it but nightfall? No, no, not night but death; Was it needless death after all? For England may keep faith For all that is done and said. We know their dream; enough To know they dreamed and are dead; And what if excess of love Bewildered them till they died? I write it out in a verse - MacDonagh and MacBride And Connolly and Pearse Now and in time to be, Wherever green is worn, Are changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born. Born in Dublin, Ireland, on June 13, 1865, William Butler Yeats was the son of a wellknown Irish painter, John Butler Yeats. He spent his childhood in County Sligo, where his parents were raised, and in London. He returned to Dublin at the age of fifteen to continue his education and study painting, but quickly discovered he preferred poetry. Born into the Anglo-Irish landowning class, Yeats became involved with the Celtic Revival, a movement against the cultural influences of English rule in Ireland during the Victorian period, which sought to promote the spirit of Ireland s native heritage. Though Yeats never learned Gaelic himself, his writing at the turn of the century drew extensively from sources in Irish mythology and folklore. Yeats was deeply involved in politics in Ireland, and in the twenties, despite Irish independence from England, his verse reflected a pessimism about the political situation in his country and the rest of Europe, paralleling the increasing conservativism of his American counterparts in London, T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. His work after 1910 was strongly influenced by Pound, becoming more modern in its concision and imagery, but Yeats never abandoned his strict adherence to traditional verse forms. Appointed a senator of the Irish Free State in 1922, he is remembered as an important cultural leader, as a major playwright (he was one of the founders of the famous Abbey Theatre in Dublin), and as one of the very greatest poets in any language of the century. W. B. Yeats was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1923 and died in 1939 at the age of seventy-three.
