It s an exciting time for sports. Baseball s pennant races are in full swing. Sadly Yogi Berra will not be gracing us with his Yogi-izms anymore. May he rest in peace. Amazingly, on the American Football front the Jets have managed to win a few. What a relief! By all accounts this year s Feis was a resounding success. Thank you to all Division 15 members for lending a helping hand; as usual we were well represented. The new venue at Nickerson Beach provided plenty of room for all. For the first time the Long Island Gaels ran a Cul Camp for Gaelic Football. We were fortunate to have Simon Gillespie, NYGAA Development Officer present to help run it. Congratulations to Dublin on taking the All Ireland in Gaelic Football. Kerry will have to wait for next year. Hard to believe it s already half way to Saint Patrick s Day. Thanks to the Green Beret Team for putting on another successful dinner down at Hibernian Hall. Also thank you to Steve Conwell (aka Conway) for helping me move back into my house. Thank God I am finally out of the trailer. Our next meeting is October 14th, we will be conducting first nominations for Division Officers for Needless to say this is an important meeting. It also will be last call for ordered hats, shirts and jackets. If you have not paid and picked yours up it will be sold. Looking forward into October, we will start off with the Long Beach Parade and Irish Day on Saturday October 3rd. Parade starts at 11 am sharp. Later in the month, we will have our annual Communion Breakfast. The details are as follows; October 18th, St. William the Abbott, 10:45 am mass. Men, suits and sashes on the day. Breakfast and football back at hall, 15 dollars. Please sign up on Friday. Happy Birthday Marines! It s a bit early but November 10th is the day the US Marine mark their start. We will be taking a table at the Marine Corp Ball to be held at Chateau Briand on November 5th. I have a few spots open, $75 per ticket. Please see me asap, if interested. Sadly, I must report that Joe Campbell s daughter Megan has been diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. Please remember her and our deceased members, Terrence Murphy and John Parker in your payers. That s about it. See you down at the hall. 2 P a g e 2 M i k e s T i d b i t s I hope you all enjoyed the nice weather we had for the last month. Now get ready for the Fall season when all the leaves start to fall. I love the season but hate raking leaves. I guess we have to take the good with the bad. G r e e n B e r e t C l u b N e w s S t a r s & S h a m r o c k s Mens Dues Please send 2015 annual dues: $45 Joe Campbell 85 Grand Ave We would like to thank all those who attended and made the Halfway to St. Patrick s diner a success. We are now working on the fish fry for February, more on that at a later date. Don t forget the Pig Roast on Sunday October 25. That is always a great day. The proceeds from that go towards the Scholarship awards that Ken Ferguson and Ed Mc Glade started. Last year they were able to award 5 scholarships to different member s children and grandchildren. Let s support this function as it is a worthwhile cause. As of Friday, October 2,2015 we are changing the time we pull the name for the Sign in book from 12 o clock to 11 PM. This will allow us old folks to go home earlier. For the month of October our special beer will be Octoberfest from the Blue Point Brewery in Blue Point. That s about it for now, hope to see you at the Hall on Friday. Green Beret Trustees Chair: Michael Greene Treas. Bob Brennan Rec. Sec. Ed McGlade House/Bar: Jim McCann Entertainment: Ken Ferguson To Rent the Hall please call: To be notified of wakes please Ken Ferguson at shamrocken47@verizon.net T a r a P i p e s a n d D r u m s As I sit here and write this update, I am also in the process of getting ready to march in the Long Beach Irish Day parade this Saturday October 3rd. My first parade, on October 2, What a long strange trip it has been. Traditionally one of my favorite parades. Each year seems to get better and better. This parade is a great day to hang with band members and get the pulse of the band. I do believe more ideas have come from one of the many watering facilities in Long Beach. If you haven t visited the parade please do so this year. The band will be holding a couple of fund raisers over the next couple of months. Please when we announce them please come and support us. Especially as we get ready for our trip to Ireland in March. The next big event for the band is the pipers ball to be held on November 7th at the American Legion starting at 7pm. The cost is $45 per head. It is always a fun party with great entertainment by the band. We recently had a group of new students - so if you know anyone who wants to take lessons please come down. Lessons are always free. Ed McGlade, BandMaster
3 S t a r s & S h a m r o c k s In God We Trust P a g e 3 C h a p l a i n s C o r n e r As usual I am writing the column as the Editor waits after sending a reminder that he is awaiting my column. I had difficulty coming up with a theme but then the light bulb became lighted. Let me speak about three journeys. For the past week most of us have been watching the JOURNEY of Pope Francis as he traveled to Cuba, Washington, D.C., New York City and now on to Philly. My thoughts last night as I watched the Mass from MSG was about our own, Jim Burke. How fortunate that he was chosen as a representative of the AOH to serve the people as an Usher. I am sure that he will regale us with many stories of his impression of the Papal Mass. Unfortunately,, I will not be present at the hall to listen to his tales about The Papal Mass. And this brings me to the second Journey. Next Tuesday, 9/29, I will be leaving JFK and traveling to Ireland. I will be with Fr. Ken Zach, Pastor of St. Rose of Lima who will be visiting Ireland for the first time. Fr. Ken was invited by Fr. Joe McCann, a Vincentian Priest residing in Dublin. Fr. Joe has set up the first five days in Dublin with visits to Pubs, Croke Park, and places of Interest. Later we plan on visiting historic sites such as Clonmacnoise, Croagh Patrick, Galway, the Cliffs of Moher, Glendalough, etc. I will return just in time for our October meeting on October 14th. Please pray for good weather. The last journey that I wish to bring to your attention is the journey that has been spoken about in the Gospels for the past several weeks. Jesus, according to the Gospel of Mark, starts out from the North end of the Sea of Gailee with the ending of the journey in Jerusalem. On the way he asks several questions: Who do people say that I am? is one of the questions. Another is asked by his disciples as to Who is the greatest/ among the apostles. And lastly, Jesus reminds us that we all are called: To serve one another especially the lowly, the disenfranchised, the immigrants, etc. That to me was the message that Pope Francis left us with as he presided at the Papal MSG. May we all profit from his brief but powerful visit to our Country. GOD BLESS AMERICA! Peace, Deacon Frank Right to Life RESPECT LIFE MONTH OCTOBER please pray this month especially, for the protection of all human life from the moment of conception till natural death. STAND UP FOR LIFE Sunday, October 4, :00 PM - 3:30 PM (rain or shine) at the intersection of Route 110 and Route 25 Huntington Long Island. Signs will be distributed at site and will read ABORTION KILLS CHILDREN LOVE THEM BOTH (with picture of mother and child). Stand Up For Life is a part of the National Chain. Last year over 1890 pro-life witnesses were held on the first Sunday in October throughout the United States and Canada. Stand Up For Life welcomes persons of all faiths to stand together for life. Please promote this event, invite your family and friends, and join us on October 4, 2015, as we stand together in public witness to the Sanctity of Life on Long Island. 4 P a g e 4 S t a r s & S h a m r o c k s Galway Bay Did You Know This article features the less well known song called Galway Bay, the one performed by the Irish singer Dolores Keane. This version was written by Frank Fahy and is sometimes known as The Old Galway Bay, or My Own Dear Galway Bay. Great old song but little known outside Galway This fine old song has been around for about 100 years but wasn t very well known outside Ireland until it was taken up by the Irish singer Dolores Keane. Keane was born the village of Sylane in County Galway, not far from the famous bay and so she is well acquainted with both the song and the area. She still lives in Galway. An emigrant looks back to Ireland Like its more famous counterpart, Fahy s Galway Bay is told from the viewpoint of an Irish emigrant living abroad and looking back to his youth in Ireland. It s less sentimental than the better known version and has none of the Irish cliché scenes of turf fires and barefoot children. For this reason, it is more popular with Irish musicians and singers. Lyrics give a personal statement of regret Fahy came from Galway and his song is like a personal statement from a man who wishes he had never had to leave. The song is told from the point of view of an old man who expects to die soon but wishes to give his blessing to all those back home. The lyrics not only sing the praises of Galway and Ireland but they also suggest regret at ever leaving. The singer reflects that if his youthful heart of fire could be restored to him once more, if he could have his time again, then he would never leave Galway. He would be content with whatever God sent as long as he could stay in his homeland. Galway Bay strikes a chord with many emigrants Those are sentiments that would have struck a chord with many of the millions of Irish people who had to emigrate to countries like America, the United Kingdom and Australia. Hardly any of them returned but they kept their longing for the old country and in many cases that empathy with Ireland was passed down to their children, grandchildren and beyond. Many of those descendants can remember the sacrifices made by their Irish ancestors and can still relate to the sentiments in Galway Bay. Lyrics set to old Irish melodies The lyrics to Galway Bay were originally set to an old Irish folk tune that was also used in the song Skibbereen, which is also about a person having to emigrate from Ireland. Later it was set to another old Irish tune which was also used in the Australian song The Wild Colonial Boy, about the legendary Irish/Australian outlaw Jack Duggan. In an unprecedented welcome for a foreign dignitary, President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and their families traveled to Joint Base Andrews to greet the pontiff upon his arrival. This honor only goes to show the impact, respect and reverence the Pope has earned. Pope Francis has inspired millions around the world with his humility, generosity of spirit and warm and inclusive personality. His six day visit highlighted his love for the poor and his willingness to tackle the nation s most significant political, social and economic controversies.
