2 Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 14 PO Box Joe McCusker SEPTEMBER 2013 AOH President s Message Welcome back, now that Summer is over there will be no more trips to the beach to bask in the sun (Buddy) and float in the ocean (Mike/Leo). The heck with the Summer and on to the Fall, the best time of the year. The Fall brings with it the MLB Championships, American Football, Ice Hockey, Basketball and the All Ireland Championships. And for those that aren t sports fans we have apple picking. While we were in break many of the members were busy supporting our Annual Summer Food Tasting and the Memorial Golf Outing. Both events were well attended bringing membership together for good causes and generating the needed monies for the respective Building Restoration and Division Scholarship Funds. Congratulations to all for a job well done. Also during break the Committee, chaired by Bill Byrne, to review the Division By-Laws meet and considerable progress has been made towards completion before the end of this year. As we begin to slip into the Fall please pay particular attention to the Calendar of Events listed in the Newsletter. The Tailgate parties are back by popular demand and will be held in the Members Lounge scheduled for every 4 P.M. Patriots game. A tremendous amount of man/woman power goes into making these Tailgates a success. Please plan on attending, get reacquainted with old friendships and develop some new ones, you won t be disappointed (unless the Patriots lose). As I write this message my thoughts repeatedly drift to Dennis Murphy who just underwent extensive surgery. Please keep Dennis in your prayers for a speedy recovery. 3 LAOH President s Message The Fashion and Floral show was a success. 71 Ladies attended and had a wonderful afternoon. Sister Hibernians from Lowell, Lynn, Salem and Worcester came to support the effort. I would like to thank Sue McCallum (Co-Chair), Ellen Dupuis, Ann Crimmins who gave their and Sunday and Saturday to assist, Mary Thompson, Ann Trainor who came Sunday morning to help set up, Pat Falter for bringing the Centerpieces, which were a great hit, Ellen Waldron for greeting and collecting the tickets at the door, and Ellen Ridge and Rita Stacy for selling chances on the bouquets and former member, Mary Haggerty for Donating one of the Door prizes. Some donated money towards the pastry and some baked. Most of all, thank you for buying the tickets. Without your assistance the day wouldn't have been possible and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I even think we may have two new members contemplating joining LAOH. Our next meeting is OCT 21st, change due to the Columbus Day Holiday. Meeting will start at 7:00PM. There will be Bingo Games following the business meeting. Mary Logue has the cards used at past Hibernian Bingos. This should be a fun evening. All tables for the Nov 2 nd Yard Sale have been sold. Janet Connolly and Carol Stockdale will be looking for help and bake goods for the Baked Table. See the flyer for details. Please make a copy and place in a store or at work. The November 11 th Meeting will be our Charity Donation Evening. I have spoken to Catholic Charities and was give the name of St Ambrose Family Shelter in Dorchester. Currently they are housing 16 families. After speaking to the Director, Rick Fritas, non-perishable food items or Super Market Gift Cards will be greatly appreciated. This would be in place of the Baby Shower Meeting. Many of our members are Dues Paying only; we need your help in support of these events. If you cannot attend the meeting will you send a gift card to LAOH in care of the Hall, 151 Watertown St., 02472? Let us prove that we, as members, even if in name only, are a Charitable Group willing to help those in need. I have been looking into our Annual Christmas Party Meeting to be held on Saturday, Dec. 7th. The past few years it has been a Luncheon. Further details will be discussed at the Oct. meeting. Please note that this is a tremendous cash drain on the Division account, the more we can save the more we can donate to charity. LAOH Division Indoor Yard Sale The Indoor yard Sale is scheduled to be held on Saturday November 2nd from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM. Admission is free. There will be coffee and donuts for sale in the morning and hot dogs, chips and soda will be for sale at lunchtime. There will also be a table of home baked goods for sale.

We have had a few people ask about these requirements for the member's rate, so we wanted to help clarify these requirements. The Members Lounge may be used for up to fifty people. For more than fifty the Big Hall is available. We love to see members renting the hall for all their family functions. 9 PLEASE REMEMBER OUR RECENTLY DECEASED Kenneth Hartford Hartford, Kenneth Robert, Sr. of Newton, MA, son of the late Walter and Catherine Hartford, brother of the late Walter Hartford Jr., passed away peacefully at South Shore Hospital on Friday September 20th, He was born and lived his entire life in Newton, he loved the city dearly. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 49 years Beverly (MacPhee) Hartford and his three children, Walter, Kenny, & Christy and the pride and joy of his life, his four grandchildren, J.T., Amelia, Marissa, & Anthony. He is also survived by his sister Carol Ann Mahoney as well as his many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and other family and friends. Ken was very active in local politics and was the sitting Commissioner of the Newton Election Committee. He was a veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He worked he entire career for Raytheon and was a key member of the teams that developed the Patriot and Sidewinder missile systems. He was also a past President of the Scituate Beach Association. Funeral from the Burke & Blackington Funeral Home, 1479 Washington St. (Rte. 16), West Newton, Thursday, September 26 at 9:30 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 573 Washington St., Newton at 10:30 AM. Visiting hours will be held in the Funeral Home, Wednesday evening from 4:00-8:00 PM, relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment in Newton Cemetery, Newton Centre. A reception will follow at the Ancient Order of Hibernians at 151 Watertown St., Donations may be made in Ken's memory to the charity of the donor's choice.
