1 CONCORD KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 112 Knightly News AUGUST 2009 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 2 Supreme Knight: Abortion-Free Health Reform Delegates to the 127th annual convention of the Aug.6 adopted a resolution declaring opposition to any health care reform legislation that does not explicitly exclude abortion coverage for any health insurance plan, public or private. On Tuesday in his annual report to the convention, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson had sounded a similar note, saying, Health care reform must be abortion free. The resolution on Defending the Right to Life also called on legislators everywhere to adopt legislation protecting the religious conscience rights of doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, guaranteeing their right to refuse to participate in abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide or any other practice that is destructive of innocent human life or that conflicts with their sincerely-held religious beliefs. The resolution reaffirmed the commitment of the 1.78 million member to unconditional support for the right to life and full protection in law for every human being from conception to natural death. Finally, the DD Carignan Hospitalized in July Deputy for District Nine, Ray Carignan was hospitalized on Saturday, July 25th while attending the State Council District Deputy seminar. Ray experienced severe pain on the right side of his neck and had difficulty breathing. He was released home a few days later and is back at work as a District Deputy. The cause of the pain has not been announced. Ray is the past two-time Grand Knight of the Hooksett council and served as District Deputy for Concord Council 112 from 2008 to resolution restates the organization s long-standing policy of not inviting to any event, persons, especially public officials or candidates for public office, who do not support the protection of unborn children against abortion or who advocate the legalization of assisted suicide, euthanasia and other violations of the right to life. 2 P AGE 2 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 2 Special Olympics Awarded Tootsie Roll Funds At the August 10th business meeting, Council 112 presented Dick Nadeau, FDD a check for just over $2200, representing the council's share of funds collected during the Tootsie Roll drive last June. Dick has been the council's long-time liaison to the Concord Cougars, the Special Olympics team that is routinely supported by the Tootsie Roll drive. Council 112 collected nearly $3200 from donations at area supermarkets as well as at the four area Catholic parishes. The check was presented by the drive's chairman, Council Treasurer Jim Marshall, PGK and Council Inside Guard Frank Vinciguerra - who was personally responsible for collecting almost a third of the money alone. The NH K of C had the most successful Tootsie Roll drive in its history in Frank Vinciguerra Ladies Create Quilts, Cards for Veterans Members of Council 112 s Ladies Group were instrumental in the ladies programs at the NH K of C State meetings, July 25th and 26th. Attendees at the ladies programs created hand-made blankets, custom-designed greeting cards and overflowing gift baskets (pictured) for distribution later to veteran s organizations throughout New Hampshire. State Deputy McCann was especially moved by the displays: I was about to close the meeting when... I turned around and saw what [the ladies] had done for our veterans. Tear in eye, I introduced them... 3 P AGE 3 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 2 Family Day Picnic Only Days Away Time is growing short to reserve your place for Council 112 s 2009 Family Day Picnic, held in its traditional location of Elm Brook State Park, Hopkinton, Sunday, August 23rd at 11:00 AM. The annual event is a regular summer highlight for members and their families, and provides a relaxing, fun opening to the fraternal year. Guests enjoy an extensive cookout featuring large amounts of burgers, hot dogs, chicken, salads, drinks and desserts. The State Park has great facilities for everything from horseshoes to remote-control airplane flying, as well as a large beach for swimming, boating and fishing. Knights and their families always look forward to a competitive final game of volleyball. Cost for the whole day is only $7.00 per person, $20 for an entire family. Elm Brook State Park charges an entrance fee of $1.00 per auto passenger, with a maximum of $4.00. When entering, please mention to the front gate attendant that you are with the Concord Knights of Columbus. Don t miss it! Officers Mull Fundraising Ideas for Council Officers at the August 4th planning meeting were intent on facing down the council s tight budget for the new fraternal year by considering several fundraising ideas. Grand Knight David Dale personally suggested a fundraising scheme which would have the council take orders for discounted boxes of premium fudge at a retail profit. The council would retain the proceeds. Council Trustee Glenn Camley, PGK, PFN, FDD introduced a Ladies Group suggestion of sponsoring several Sunday morning pancake breakfasts at successive Concord parishes. Additional discussions centered around apple sales, Christmas card sales, and Pro-Life fundraising in the coming months. DD Thibeault on Active Duty in Mid-East District Deputy Keith Thibeault, PGK has arrived safely in an unspecified area of the middle east where he will be serving on active duty for the Air Force. Details of his work or the exact length of his stay are withheld for security purposes however he is widely expected to attend Council 112 s October business meeting. In messages sent during July, Thibeault reported that he had arrived safely and that he was anxious to offer his service to the assigned chaplain at Mass. He was also going to seek out any other brother Knights stationed there as well. Regular daytime temperatures in his area easily top 100 in August and dip to just over 80 at night. Thibeault also reported that he had gotten some really good military refresher training before he left and was starting to settle into a routine.

4 KNIGHTLY NEWS P AGE 4 McGee Named Council Program Director Council brother Chuck McGee has accepted an invitation from Grand Knight David Dale to serve as the Program Director for the current fraternal year. Chuck was still creating his team of service area directors however he has already said that his priority would be to create a single fundraising project which would draw significant income for Council 112. Returning from last year will be Council Program Director Paul McAuliffe, Youth Program Director and Field Agent Matt Poulin, and Family Program Director Red Brochu. No directors have been named yet for Church or Community programs. Council Advocate Jim Cailler will also be returning as Membership Director, following an extended stint of treatment for back ailments. In other positions, newsletter and website editor Council Warden Bob Jursik, FDD was a natural choice for Public Relations chair, and Paul McAuliffe has been named as chairman of Health programs. Tony Marino, who has served the longest of any chairman in the council, will continue to promote Right to Life programs. Other chairs of individual projects New Years Eve Gala, Tootsie Roll Drive will be determined on an ad hoc basis whenever necessary. Record Attendance for July State Quarterly Ed McCann s first Quarterly meeting as New Hampshire s State Deputy was an encouraging success, as more than 165 attendees from a record 49 local councils squeezed into the Our Lady of Mercy Church Hall in Merrimack on July 26th. After a Mass celebrated by State Chaplain Fr. Agapit Jean, PSD, members enjoyed a luncheon provided by Council 6725 and then got down to business. The NH State Council will be pursuing a membership gain of 360 this year ( A-Member -A-Day ) and has reformed the program-reporting process for State recognition and awards. The next Quarterly will be October 18th in North Conway. State Chair Seeks Concord Life Memorial NH K of C State Pro-Life Chairman Ron DiStasio of Nashua has specifically requested Council 112 s and 4th Degree Assembly 627 s help to erect a New Hampshire State Pro-Life Memorial in Concord. With the cooperation of the area s four Catholic parishes, DiStasio envisions a large, visible structure placed permanently on a church s grounds which will remember the thousands of aborted lives lost throughout the state. The council and assembly would be responsible to help manage fundraising. Previous efforts to erect a memorial, financed by Concord residents, ran into funding and design problems and were dropped. Penacook council 5288 erected a small pro-life memorial within Woodlawn Cemetery some years ago.

While the hot weather may encourage a slower paced life, in many ways summer can be the busiest time of the year. Especially for parents with school-aged children. And being busy, it s easy to forget about such things as reviewing your life insurance coverage. The purpose of this column is to encourage you to meet with me before the end of the summer. She weighed in at seven pounds, two ounces and measured 19 inches long. Lucille was the name of Paul s maternal grandmother. Faith is Paul and Jenni e s second daughter. Anthony Kuzia, CM St. Jean Marie Vianney is the patron saint of parish priests and we celebrate his feast day each year on August 4 th. Recently, when Pope Benedict XVI announced the year of the Priest he mentioned St. Jean Vianney as a model of priestly ministry. During the year of the priest, the Church asks us to remember what it is to be a priest. This will not only be an opportunity for priests to rediscover their vocation, mission and passion for Christ, but it's also a chance for the rest of us to rediscover what a gift the priesthood is for our own lives. St. Jean Vianney wrote a Catechism on the priesthood and in it he said, Holy Orders is a sacrament which seems to relate to no one among you, and which yet relates to everyone. By that I think he meant that very few of us seem to understand what being a priest is all about and yet the holy priests in our lives provide us with an irreplaceable presence. As St. Jean Vianney said it, the priest is the doorway to the treasures of heaven. He is the steward of the good God, distributor of his wealth. As such, a priest is at the service of all others. He is not a priest for himself. The priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus. He added, When you see a priest, think of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The Knights of Columbus have identified promoting priestly vocations as an integral part of their mission. One of the ways that our local brother knights have chosen to be a part of this mission is through the 31 Club. Members of the 31 Club make a commitment to attend Mass at least one day each month through the 2009 year to pray for vocations to the priesthood. I would urge each of my brother knights to offer their prayers for vocations by participating in the 31 Club. As a priest, I would ask additionally for the charity of your prayers for my brother priests and myself so that we may always mirror the love of Christ for others.
