2 The purpose of the NH State Council Weekly Briefing is to provide to the membership, timely information from your State Officers, District Deputies, Directors, Chairman, Councils, and Assemblies of the NH State Council. The Goal is to provide short term, up-to-date newsworthy articles, notices, & communication, in cooperation with the NH State Council Granite Knight Newsletter and the NH State Council Website. The deadline for entries is Sunday afternoon. Submissions must be submitted to and received by no later than 3:00 pm in order to prepare and submit timely for each Monday issue. Please plan your submission requests accordingly. Your article should be sent as a ready to go completed submission preferably in a Word Document. PDF s are acceptable; however, if there are errors or corrections needed for a PDF it will be returned to the sender to fix. PS: Spread the word! 5 A Message from the State Advocate DOs and DON Ts during the upcoming season As the political environment gets more and more heated; as the issues of honesty, fake news and civic obligations become more prominent; as the health of Holy Mother Church and its mission to spread the Gospel, the Good News is threatened it is imperative that we take action in the Market Place to preserve our Church from the onslaughts of those that despise Christians in general and Catholics with vehemence. Several of our Brothers serve in the NH House with me. The Brothers are from both major parties. They have seen, they have heard the insults to Catholics, to nuns, to representatives of our Bishop and some have even been the target of their assaults personally. Some defend the faith, others are less inclined to so do. Never one to run from a good verbal discussion we have engaged these foes, but are often out shouted and ridiculed. There are even some who claim Catholic faith, but refuse to support Catholic policies feebly claiming there is a separation between the secular political support of a person, and the teaching of the Church. I know some reading this support a party, but party support can never, NEVER, separate us from our faith. Some politicians claim abortion is a right, Catholics state abortion is sin. This is perhaps the most extreme of the differences, but nevertheless it illustrates the fights taking place in Concord, and in Washington. A few dos and don ts regarding politics are below. Now, is the time to start separating the chaff from the seed in the 2018 election process. Find out which candidates support, or at least tolerate, the Church. Engage the foes of Religious Freedom in public, but do so only as individuals. Do Not say the Knights of Columbus says but you can say The Church teaches A Council or Assembly can hold a candidates night, so long as it is open to all candidates. If both sides wish to attend, fine. Don t be afraid to ask probing questions. If one side or the other declines, perhaps that is also conveying a message? Anyway, from Supreme: Guidelines for Political Activity Knights are first and foremost Catholic citizens who are members of their communities and constituents of their elected officials. A citizen most effectively petitions his elected official as an individual voter. Ordinarily, there is no need to refer to one s membership in the Knights of Columbus when petitioning an elected official. The message we want to send is I am an informed constituent who has a principled stand [against / in favor of] your public policy choices and I vote. As Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI reminded us: It is imperative that the entire Catholic community in the United States comes to realize the grave threats to the Church s public moral witness. [1] To help members answer this call to faithful citizenship effectively, the Knights of Columbus provides the following list of political activity DOs and DON Ts : DOs DO become active in the political life of your local community; DO register to vote and encourage others to register to vote; DO initiate and participate in robust get out the vote efforts to bring voters to the polls in all primary, general, and special elections; DO become informed on public policy issues of fundamental interest to the Catholic Church at the local, state, federal, and international levels; DO become acquainted with public policy initiatives of the national conferences of Catholic Bishops as well as state and provincial Catholic conferences; DO study and reflect upon the teachings of the Catholic Church so as to develop a well-formed Catholic conscience a good place to start would be to review relevant sections of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, available

6 at ; DO order booklets on specific issues of fundamental importance to Catholics published by the Catholic Information Service, ; DO share with others the Catholic Church s teachings on moral issues of fundamental importance to society; DO advocate for Catholic positions on local and national legislative and other issues of fundamental interest to the Catholic Church. This includes participation in action alert announcements that seek to make the voices of Catholic citizens heard on legislation of o fundamental interest to the Catholic Church; DO write letters to the editor of local newspapers; DO know your elected representatives and their positions on issues of fundamental interest to the o Catholic Church; DO correspond with your representatives and let them know that you support the Catholic position on issues of fundamental interest to the Catholic Church; DO thank representatives for their actions taken on issues of fundamental interest to the Catholic o Church; DO join the Supreme Council and your State Council in advocating for public policy issues. When doing so, echo the sentiments and wording the Supreme Council or your State Council have already articulated; and DO VOTE! DON Ts DO NOT engage in any partisan political activity in the name of the Knights of Columbus. Partisan political activity is defined as including activity that seeks to endorse or oppose a candidate or party in a campaign for public office. DO NOT make partisan political statements in the name of the Knights of Columbus. A partisan political statement is defined as including statements that seek to endorse or oppose a candidate or party in a campaign for public office. DO NOT, on behalf of your local council, congratulate or admonish public officials in the name of the Knights of Columbus. DO NOT, on behalf of your local council, take a position on a matter of public policy unless you are joining a position the Supreme Council or your State Council has already articulated; DO NOT distribute any Knights of Columbus member lists or contact information to political campaigns or to individuals running for office; DO NOT use an official fraternal title in connection with your personal political activity, except to convey biographical information; and DO NOT use Knights of Columbus facilities, including, but not limited to, accounts, social media, fax machines, letterhead and the like, in connection with partisan political activity. 7 A Message from the State Deputy March 2018 Brother Knights, I have a special request for our State Membership Team that we believe will benefit the Knights of Columbus greatly, within the State of New Hampshire. While we have always endeavored to expand our brotherhood with Council s centered on certain ethnicities, we have never taken a full step forward in this direction, other than what if? While we have passed our half way point in the fraternal year, no time could be better in taking a full step forward in the process, than now. The New Hampshire State Council has the opportunity to either reactivate or institute a new Spanish Speaking Council. At this point in the process, I am just seeking out individual Brother Knights who are fluent in speaking Spanish, and who may also be willing to possibly transfer to a new Council and take on a leadership role in the Manchester and surrounding area? For information sake, this process is far from being underway, so activation or reactivation would not be by the end of this fraternal year, however, will be the process of laying the groundwork for the next fraternal year. Please respond to me with your favorable response or with any questions that may come to mind. 8 Upcoming Degree Exemplifications: ALL FIRST DEGREES: Please contact First Degree Team Captain as soon as possible to inform him of candidates and number of spectators. Please do not delay in making arrangements for your candidates. The Degree will be cancelled unless enough candidates are registered by the Friday immediately preceding the scheduled date. The Degree Team reserves the right to limit the class size. The dress code is suit jacket and tie with appropriate footwear for all candidates and spectators. The principle of this degree is Charity, so let your council show their enthusiasm and support for these candidates by their attendance at this First Degree. All Knights who are Spectators must present a valid membership card in order to be admitted to the Degree Ceremonial. 14 NH Knights video schedule for March Week of March 5 th Jewish Roots of the Papacy -Week of March 12 th Jewish Roots of the Eucharist -Week of March 19 th Jesus as Bridegroom -Week of March 26 th The Fourth Cup The NH Knights video schedule for March is dedicated to the Lenten season. All of the videos are by Dr. Brant Pitre who is a well-known Catholic author, speaker and seminary professor. Dr Pitre has developed a certain perspective in many of his works that helps Catholics look at the Bible and the Church through the eyes of 1 st century Judaism. By understanding the Jewish foundation in the Old and New Testament we can come to a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith. As of now Nashua, Hudson, Pelham, Salem and Concord cable access TV systems broadcast our weekly programming. We need more knights around the state to help us get this Catholic programming out to more NH towns. All we need is one knight in each town to contact their local cable access TV system to request the NH Knights videos be broadcasted. See the attached info sheets. This is an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment as Knights of Columbus to Special Olympics as this is a priority for Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson. I am in the process of collecting pledges for this event and no donation is too small. Individual sponsorships are $2, per athlete. This can happen with your efforts as a council, as a district or any combination. If we receive just $ from each council then we could send three athletes to the USA Games. Please contact me with your pledge to provide opportunity to our deserving athletes that will represent the State of New Hampshire at the USA Games in Seattle, Washington. 17 2018 Knights of Columbus Men s Retreat September 7 th thru September 9th My Brother Knights, Please save the date September 7 th - 9 th for the Annual Knights of Columbus Men s Retreat. It will again be on beautiful Lake Wentworth, Wolfeboro, NH at Camp Bernadette. The theme for the weekend has not been chosen but I am sure our Spiritual Director for the weekend Fr. Chris Martel, pastor of St. John Newman Parish, Merrimack will greatly fill our needed spiritually. Full details will be presented at this year s State Convention April 27th - 29th. 18 CAMP FATIMA NEEDS OUR HELP I recently held an annual meeting with Mike Drumm on February 23 rd at Camp Fatima. We always meet to get ready for the Knights' Annual Camp Fatima Work Day. This year it will be held on May 19 th Much to my surprise, Mike informed me that back in October 2017 a micro-burst went through the camp. Luckily, most of the buildings only received minor damage. There was some damage to the chapel and a couple of the cabins along with outside activities area. But a lot of trees were taken down. The Camp had to hire people to remove the trees. This was a big expense for them. My reason for this letter is to ask all of our New Hampshire Councils, to please consider making at least a $ donation to help with these expenses. Camp Fatima is self-insured through the Diocese, although, the Diocesan deductible is very high and portion is assessed to the entity filling the claim. If you can, please send a check made out to Camp Fatima and mail it to me. Many hands make light work, so please plan ahead and consider helping in any way you can on that day, May 19 th Camp Fatima has always been good to the New Hampshire Knights, providing us the camp for our Camporee Weekend over Labor Day, as well as providing the Knights a place to hold our annual retreat. Don't forget, any Knight in good standing that comes to Work Day can receive 20% discount to send a child or grandchild to summer camp. Work Day also reserves your cabin for Camporee. 19 Worthy Grand Knights, I m sure (and I hope) many of your councils will be busy with Holy Week activities and rightfully so. It should be, first and foremost, a time of personal and fraternal reflection on the supreme sacrifice Jesus Christ made for us on Mount Calvary. However, please remember Founder s Day the birthday of our Order is this Thursday, March 29. What a great opportunity to remind your fellow parishioners of the charitable work the Holy Spirit has been inspiring us to do for 136 years because of the vision of one man Father Michael J. McGivney, our founder! In that spirit I designed the attached flyer you can use to promote the occasion within your parish and your council.
