1 The Vine Some Summer Stuff from Pastor Doug. Summer Schedule This year we will once again move to one service at 10 AM. This will begin on July 7 th and run through September 1. We will return to two services on September 8. Once again, the Summer Bible School will continue on Sunday mornings during the 10 AM service after the Brown Bag. At 11 AM, there will be a multigenerational study offered on the Master Plan of Evangelism. It is a nine week course on Jesus way of discipleship. Finally, if you are going to be away for most of the summer, remember that we offer electronic giving for your convenience. Contact the office for more information. Whether you make use of the electronic giving or not, remember that we are here all summer for when you are home, when away, remember to worship and why not bring back a bulletin to share with me? Youth News Beginning July 1, Penny Kirkbride will be our new youth leader. She is currently working with some youth at Barnsboro, so this will be a combined group. We will try to plan a couple get-togethers in the summer. We will be in touch. Church Survey There will be a survey available during worship. While it is a bit lengthy, it will be a valuable tool for us to use in ministry as we move forward. It will help us evaluate our current ministry in terms of a number of things. Along with this survey, a demographics study of area is also being completed, so that we can see how our current ministry matches up with the needs around us. We need 100 of these completed. All attendees of our church aged 14 and over are asked to complete 1, they are due back in the church office by Sunday, July 14. You can pick one up on Sunday or stop by the church office. The surveys are completely anonymous, but because everyone feels differently
2 about sharing information, if you do not want anyone to see your survey, please seal it in an envelope and return it. It will be opened only by the compiler of the data, Dr. Stan Menking. This again will provide some very helpful information for our church and it is being done for us at no cost, because I am enrolled in a conference continuing education event. Thank you in advance for helping us complete this important ministry. Opportunity The acolytes had a great time at Clementon Park. We have three extra tickets available for $22.00 each. If you are interested, please let me know. Finally, I hope all of you have a restful and enjoyable summer!! Pastor Doug The EVE Circle is doing a missions project at the Camden Neighborhood Center! We are in need of gently used living room furniture such as sofas, love seats, side chairs, end tables, and lamps to spruce up their Senior Women's Space. Also, there is a specific need for a small round table for the women to use to serve as a coffee station. Please contact any member of Eve Circle or Pastor Doug with any questions. Summer Study Beginning on July 7 th, the Evangelism Team will be leading a study after worship for the summer season. Robert Coleman s Classic, The Master Plan of Evangelism. Come out and join us for the discussion on how Jesus discipled the twelve. Every believer is called to be a disciple and to disciple others. If you would like a book, one will be provided for $5. Coming The Summer of 2013 The United Methodist Church of Mantua Presents... Summit Seekers Children's Bible School During the 10:00am Service We hope you can join us for this awesome summer opportunity starting Sunday, June 30th, 2013 For more information please see Jenise Fraser, Susan Fuchs or visit mantuaumc.org Summer Service Blitz The service Blitz this year is August It will consist of some day trips to Camden and possibly an overnight to the shore to help with rebuilding form Superstorm Sandy. It is opened to all youth and adults. Since we are not doing a weeklong mission trip this year, this will be an opportunity to share in service to others. We will be working at the Neighborhood Center, Respond, Inc., the Fellowship House, and more. Mark your calendar and plan to join us for a day, two days, or the whole week.

6 United Methodist Church of Mantua Ministering Through Video Painless Fundraiser Buy Shop Rite ($20) or Acme ($25) Cards. The Church receives 5% You receive gift cards dollar for dollar. It costs you nothing! Currently: We sell approximately $1,000 of gift cards per month. Annually we earn about $600. Where does the money go? It pays for some of the equipment needs of MTV. In addition, contributions have been made to The Roof Fund, Chime Choir Repair, UMC Mission Trips and The Carpet Fund. Goal: We have a goal of $1,000 per week. This is easily achievable! If we only had 50 families that shop at either Shop Rite or Acme and each family bought one card per week, that would be $1,000. The church would earn $2,600 per year. When we meet this goal, MTV would not only be mostly selfsupporting, we would also be able to make larger contributions for other church needs. Action: LET S DO IT! Exchange your cash or check for Shop Rite or ACME gift cards and Go food shopping for your family! It costs nothing but reaps great rewards! THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT! 7 July-August 2013 Mantua Methodist Vine By William M. Crowley, Educational Research Director 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV), Study to show thyself approved unto GOD This exciting, unending series researches the KJV Bible with other sources. NOT NOTICED? JESUS USES A BIRD AS AN EXAMPLE (NRSV) Mathew 10:29, Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet, not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. Birds have represented comparisons to people and their behavior. The Bible calls sparrows when referring to the multitude of smaller birds. They populate the countryside in large flocks, are noisy and swarms eat the insect pests that bedevil people. (NRSV) Psalm 84:3-4, Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God. Happy are those who live in your house, ever singing your praise. Selah. Nests made in the eaves of homes are swept out. Temple nests are left undisturbed. Do the nests represent HIS teachings in our homes? Are they swept out when the noise of their hatching disturb our home lives? LONELINESS (NRSV) Psalm 102:7, I lie awake; I am like a lonely bird on the housetop. Loneliness. These social creatures (birds) when alone symbolize deep loneliness. The photo of the last passenger pigeon was most depressing. In the photo it was alone on a branch, desolate of friends while facing the reality of extinction. Companionship was a hollow memory. As the Raven said, Nevermore Soul-wrenching losses create human bottomless depression. In an actual case, the mother was admitted to the nursing home. The promise was for only a month. At month s end, her bags, including dreams, were packed. Like a falling bird the promise failed. The staff, as dark feathered messengers, stated the facts: the stay was permanent. Keenly feeling her abandonment, she cried endlessly. Death s icy touch numbed the heartbreak forever silencing her cries. Tears were the ink documenting her final days. A little bird was lost. GOD knew her. Did she know HIM? HE knows us as HE knows all the birds. SIGNIFICANCE OF HUMAN BEINGS (NRSV) Psalm 8:4, 6 & 8, what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?...you have put all things under their feet, the birds of the air, David expressed GOD s care for us in Psalm 8. Flowers, after blooming, provide bird seed. (NRSV) Mathew 6:26, the birds neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value? HE created us in HIS image. Will reward or punish when needed. Forget HIM not! HE sees all!
