2 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I don t spend much time on facebook or the other social networks. But I do, on occasion, receive s of postings from folks. Recently I saw a post from the magazine site, Berfois. The magazine had invited people to Describe your place of work in a single word. There were all kinds of responses (some not appropriate to reprint) and here is sampling: chaos unpredictable artificial travaillicious Beckettian! [i mean absurd] political [bleep] understaffed prison gilded cage sterile disorganized decaying There were also more positive offerings: home (this was a popular one) Elsinore art inspiring beehive dynamic revelatory fulfilling supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (my favorite, for the Mary Poppins childhood nostalgia of it) Roy chose the word holy to describe his place of work. I was a bit jealous since that would have been a nice choice for me, but not wanting to copy him, I finally settled on communal. The great thing about our church is that we are a community of faith, a family, a tribe who takes care of one another. We are communal. At Wednesday night Bible study we were discussing Paul s letter to the Galatians. In 6:2 Paul writes: Bear one another s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. (Gal. 6:2) And what is the law of Christ? -- We asked each other. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself. (Luke 10:27) Or, as one Bible study member summarized it: Love. I think communal comes to mind when I reflect on my place of work because we do our best to love in this place. We do our best to bear one another s burdens. We do our best to care for one another as family. What a great church to be a part of. Locally, we are a part of a great church family UMC of Yucaipa. Denominationally, we are part of a great church the people called United Methodists. Globally, we are part of a great church the church universal. How would you describe your place of work in one word? How would you describe your church in one word? Just Something to contemplate on a quiet summer night. Send in your thoughts to the editor, and maybe she ll print them next month. (Ed: She sure will!) Yours in Christ, Pastor Sharon Date Lectionary Psalms August 4 Hosea 11:1-11; Colossians 3:1-11; Luke 12:13-21 Psalm 107:1-9, 43 August 11 Isaiah 1:1, 10-20; Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16; Luke 12:32-40 Psalm 50:1-8, August 18 Isaiah 5:1-7; Hebrews 11:29-12:2; Luke 12:49-56 Psalm 80:1-2, 8-19 August 25 Jeremiah 1:4-10; Hebrews 12:18-29; Luke 13:10-17 Psalm 71:1-6 2

3 As a reminder, beginning September 1, 2013 we will offer two worship services: 8:30 am Traditional Service 11:00 am Contemporary Service Adult Sunday School classes will decide their own schedules; 9:45-10:45 am is one option. This time slot will also be used to offer special short-term studies and New Member classes. Children s programs and Nursery Care will take place the entire morning, from 8:15 am to 12:15 pm. Coffee and fellowship will also continue throughout the morning, so that folks may come and go as their morning schedules allow. Periodically, we will have an all-church brunch between the two services, promoting fellowship among all church members and friends of all ages. The goal of our new worship schedule is to reach more folks for Christ. We can only do that if everyone pitches in: Remember to pray for the success of all the new programs for the fall (see Call to a Season of Prayer at right). Volunteer! Your church needs your gifts! To offer your help, please see: Sally Gibson (Lay Leader) Laurie Pertile (Administrative Council Chair) Matt Harward (Staff-Parish Relations Chair) JOB OPENINGS! Two positions are open for Nursery Attendants at our church to care for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers ages 0-4 beginning 9/1/13. These paid positions will require working Sundays from 8:15a to 12:15p. Employment applications are available in the church office. 3 Please continue to observe Pastor Sharon s Call to a Season of Prayer (Excerpt fromapril 28 sermon; full text available at I call you to a season of prayer For your church. For your pastor. For your lay leadership. For your community, our mission field. For the traditional worship service and the contemporary worship service being planned for this fall. And beyond all that, deeper than all that pray for a movement of the Holy Spirit in our midst like we ve never seen before. Pray that we, as a church, might embody Jesus, Love-in-the-flesh. If we embody Jesus, if we draw ever closer to Him, He will make it possible for us to love one another as He has loved us. I call you to a season of prayer. Looking for prayer topics? Here are a few great suggestions: Ask God: How can I help? Who can I invite? Pray for folks whose worship and music preferences are different from your own. Pray for Sunday services starting in September: o Acolytes, liturgists, musicians, singers, tech team, ushers, greeters, prayer team... o Sunday School programs and teachers. o Fellowship time and hospitality crew. o New visitors and those who welcome them. o Nursery program: babies & toddlers, their families and the Nursery staff. o Publicity crew and all working to make this outreach for Christ in our community a success. Pray for the success of all the new ventures your church family is embarking upon. NCD Update: A 30-person sample of our congregation filled out a Natural Church Development survey about our church. When all surveys are completed and returned, the NCD organization will analyze them. Once analyzed, they will suggest what our next Church Health focus should be. The last time we did the survey, Passionate Spirituality surfaced as our church health focus. Growth in passionate spirituality will continue to be important in our church family. At the same time, we may discover that there is a new area of church health to which we want to devote special attention and energy. Watch The Friendly Visitor and bulletins for survey updates. NOTE TO 30-PERSON SURVEY GROUP: If you have not yet returned your survey PLEASE do so as soon as possible. We will send them in for analysis once all surveys have been returned.

4 Mail July 11, 2013 Dear Friends, It is with a sad heart that I pass on the news that Howard Cutter, father of Rev. Bill Cutter, pastor at Hemet UMC, died early this morning. Howard was very active in our District, he was our District Lay Leader, the District UMM president working tirelessly in the District UMM and active in the Walk to Emmaus. Howard was a good and faithful servant to our Lord and a great friend to many. We were blessed to have this man...and his family...as a part of our lives and as representatives of Christ to the community. 5 (From Johanne s worship service presentation July 20, 2013.) To our church family, Six months ago I assumed the position of Finance Committee Chair for this wonderful church where I have been a member for 34 years. According to the position description I was given, one of my 9 primary responsibilities is to keep the congregation informed as to the financial situation of the church. You may have noticed that this is the first I have fulfilled that particular responsibility. There are a few reasons for this: 1. Financial information is provided weekly in the bulletin, at monthly Admin Council meetings (open to all members), and occasionally in the Friendly Visitor. 2. I thought the midyear point would be a good time to give a status report. 3. And I am a pretty positive person and I do not like to be the bearer of bad news. However, it is my responsibility to share the facts with you, so share I will. To give you a little background, we have been operating on a bare-bones budget for several years. Our primary expenses are staff and keeping this beautiful facility maintained and running. Our staff members have not had raises for several years, so cutting expenses is not a feasible option. That said, I must inform you that our expenses have exceeded our income by $13, at the midpoint of this year. I must also point out that this deficit would be far greater if we had not again received $30,000 from the Foundation earlier this year. For those not familiar with the Foundation, it is funded primarily through monies and property bequeathed to the United Methodist Church of Yucaipa Foundation for programs and projects above and beyond the normal operating expenses of the church. The money is managed and invested by a Foundation Committee, not by the Finance Committee. For many years, the Foundation has been helping pay the church s operating expenses; however, we cannot rely on this forever. Depleting this fund is like dipping into one s retirement fund prior to retiring. If we cannot be self-supporting, once the Foundation monies are gone, we will have nowhere to turn for financial help. I should also note that in 2012 we were only able to pay half of our apportionments. So far this year, we have been paying 10% of our regular giving income to apportionments, at which rate, we will again fall short. What can we do about this? We have taken steps to grow our church by adding a second service beginning in the Fall with the related added expenses funded by the Foundation. We hope the new service will bring people through our open doors to find a home in this church as we have. But we are doing this to spread God s Word, not to raise money. So the responsibility for supporting this church remains with us, the members here now. As I said, I am an optimistic person who has loved this church for 34 years. I know we can succeed by realizing we are the church, and we are the only source of income to keep it going. If each of us increases our giving for the remainder of this year by 16% (for example, a monthly offering of $100 would increase $16), we should be able to break even in the second half of the year. While we will still require additional support from the Foundation, it is a start. Pastor Sharon has called us to a Season of Prayer, and those prayers should include thanks for this church and the guidance and generosity to support it. This is not all doom and gloom. I have faith that we will prayerfully continue to support and sustain our church. I will close with Philippians 4:6. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Johanne Dyerly Finance Committee Chair 5

6 A big THANK YOU to Paul Wohler (Deb Davidson s husband) and Mick Gibson (Sally Gibson s hubby) for coming to the rescue of Deb & Sally and the Sierra Service Project (SSP) youth when their van broke down on their summer mission trip to Stockton. And a big THANK YOU to Deb & Sally, the adult counselors for the trip, who weathered the van crisis and helped the youth to view the whole event as an exciting adventure. A big THANK YOU to Deb & Paul, too, who returned the rental van to Santa Barbara and flew home. Deb, Sally and the youth report a wonderful experience at SSP, and they did a lot of good mission work on various construction projects for the poor in Stockton. We are so proud of our youth for carrying on UMCOY s long tradition of commitment to service and mission. This year s SSP youth: Desmond Crooks, Tarrah Crooks, Noah Henson, Emily Hinckley, Jenna Rolf Van broke unpack & pack! Young and energetic SSP staff members. Water day Scrabble break. Don t miss church on Sunday, August 25, when we will see more pics and hear from those who went to SSP and summer camps. 6
