How about beginning the New Year meditating on an encouraging Bible verse chosen to inspire a fresh new walk with God and a deeper commitment to living the Christian faith. "Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. Your filth will be washed away, and you will no longer worship idols. And I will give you a new heart with new and right desires, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony heart of sin and give you a new, obedient heart. And I will put my Spirit in you so you will obey my laws and do whatever I command. 2 Dear brothers and sisters, Happy New Year! In 2012 we continue our Centennial Celebration year, which runs from the kick-off service on November 13, 2011, to the wrap-up service on November 11, We honor 100 years of ministry here at the United Methodist Church of Yucaipa. (Be sure to see the 100 for the 100 th update in this newsletter.) I suspect there are some folks who may feel, as I do, a bit of a letdown after the big celebrations of November 13 and December 4. These were very special events, with old friends returning and local dignitaries in attendance, including Mayor Dick Riddell and Mayor Pro-Tem Diane Smith, as well as United Methodist dignitaries, including the Rev. Dr. Bau Dang of the Riverside District and Bishop Mary Ann Swenson of the California-Pacific Annual Conference. We dedicated our Peace Pole, we took a group photo of all of us in our 100 th Anniversary T-shirts, we ate lots of delicious BBQ; we enjoyed beautiful music, stirring sermons, tours of the facility, historical presentations; we reminisced together, we dreamed dreams for the future After such mountaintop experiences, it can feel like we are back in the valley as we return to life as usual. We worship God every Sunday. We study the Bible in Sunday School and small group gatherings. We care for our ministry as we meet in boards and committees and councils. We do mission work in the community and beyond. We pray. We sew prayer quilts. We visit the sick. We celebrate marriages at weddings. We celebrate lives at funerals and memorial services. We celebrate our life in Christ through Baptism and Communion. We live in community together as a family of faith. We are a group of people who follow Jesus. We encourage each other on that path. As I list some of the ordinary things we continue to do together, I feel a bit of that post-big-event-letdown feeling subside. The ordinary things we do together are so extraordinary. Everything we do is in service to the kingdom of Jesus Christ in this place. How can that be ordinary? In the New Year, our work is to continue to go deeper in our relationship with Jesus, and to go broader in our efforts to connect with those who do not yet know Him. We need to share our faith with each other; we need to share our faith with a hurting world. In short, we need to get even more serious about living out our mission: We are called to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. This is, in my opinion, the best New Year s resolution we could make as a church family. As you make your own resolutions, I hope you ll include this one. Wishing you a blessed New Year. Yours in Christ, Pastor Sharon January Lectionary Readings: January 1 Ecclesiastes 3:1-13; Revelation 21:1-6a; Matthew 25:31-46 (Watch Night readings) January 8 Genesis 1:1-5; Acts 19:1-7; Mark 1:4-11 January 15 1 Samuel 3:1-10 (11-20); 1 Corinthians 6:12-20; John 1:43-51 January 22 Jonah 3:1-5, 10; 1 Corinthians7:29-31; Mark 1:14-20 January 29 Deuteronomy 18:15-20; 1 Corinthians 8:1-13; Mark 1:21-28 Weekly Psalms for January: January 1 Psalm 8 (Psalm reading for Watch Night) January 8 Psalm 29 January 15 Psalm 139:1-6, January 22 Psalm 62:5-12 January 29 Psalm 111 ~ 2 ~ I am the light of the world. 6 Who s In Our Pews? Frank Dussel, that s who! Interviewing Frank Dussel was an enlightening experience. I thought for sure Frank would be his usual comedic self and it would be hard to get a serious answer from him. I sure was wrong. Frank s answers were, well frank! I think I got a glimpse of the nice guy that sweet Mary Ann Dussel met and fell in love with 13 years ago. When I arrived at their house, Frank was seriously at work on a Word Search puzzle, which is just about great fun as far as I m concerned, and he didn t mind a bit when I stuck my big nose in to help find some words. After a bit, we got down to business and I got the skinny on UMCoY s favorite Old Reprobate. Frank was born in Youngstown, Ohio, in Frank s early childhood was difficult at best. When I asked him about his relationship with his parents, he said Father believed in the board of education and he applied it to the seat of learning. Laughing and cringing at the same time, I found myself thinking This is the Frank I know! He described his father beating the Hell out of his mom to the point where she divorced him and moved home to her parents house in Akron. That was a blessing even though his grandparents house wasn t large and only Frank s little sister went with Mom to live there. Frank and his two older sisters went to live at the Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Orphans Home in ~ 6 ~ Xenia, Ohio. When they got to their new residence, the three kids were put in the hospital right away and there they stayed for six weeks. (This was the usual intake procedure they didn t have to stay in bed that whole time.) Frank talks fondly of the orphanage that was home to him and his sisters from about 1929 to It was a big place housing more than 800 children. Girls and boys had separate cottages, and there was a dining hall where families could eat together. Frank had lots of friends to play with and smiling, he told me you couldn t ask for a better place to raise a kid. Meanwhile, Frank s mother, who owned 100 acres of land, met and married his step father, who owned 120 acres of land himself! (What a BIG back yard!!!) Frank left the orphanage after he had finished 7 th grade and he went to live with his mom and step-father. He had plenty of chores to do, including milking 12 cows twice a day, and he was happy to do so. Although Frank s step-dad only had a 3 rd -grade education, Frank admired him more than his own father, saying he could take anything apart and put it back together. Frank also helped with maple syrup production. They collected sap in Februarys, cooked tanks of sap in a huge furnace and sold the results. (YUM! Can you even imagine how delicious freshly-cooked maple syrup must be?) Frank also remembers a lumber yard across the street where he worked occasionally.

7 After graduating from Berlin Center High School in 1941, Frank joined the United States Marine Corps. Once he signed up, he had just a week to get ready and then off he went to boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. Revealing his crazy humor again, Frank said he didn t know why the place was called Parris Island when it was more like Hell s Hole. I asked if he did well in boot camp to which he replied (slowly) There are not enough words.. bad words.. very bad words. (At this point, I was in stitches!) After seven weeks of basic, Frank was classified. First he went to Percell, Oklahoma, but ended up in Southern California at El Centro for six weeks. There, Frank was trained as a tail gunner and dive bomber. He described flying to 17,000 feet and diving straight down which was a thrill a minute. He was next stationed at El Toro, California, where a friend got him a place to stay in Pershing Square. At the time, Pershing Square was often the scene for militia receptions and was used as a forum for public speakers (according to the L.A. Department of Parks and Recreation). It was there that Frank met Violet who worked as a hostess in Pershing Square. He asked her to dance, and the young reprobate ended up marrying her! Frank next went to Guam. I asked him if he saw any action being a tail gunner in the war, and although he was assigned to a squadron, some (more than half) of the planes didn t pass inspection, and they got rid of them. He explained that as it turned out, dive bombing put excessive stress on planes causing their skin to rip. Since he wasn t needed as a gunner, Frank was assigned to the 5 th Service Supply Depot instead. Frank did his four years in the military, then in 1949, he and Violet moved to Athens, Ohio, where he used his G.I. Bill to get a degree in education from Ohio University. Frank wanted to be a teacher and his first teaching position was with 5 th -graders in Needles. I immediately thought NEEDLES? and asked how he came to teach in Needles from Ohio? Well, as it turned out, the Superintendent of ~ 7 ~ Schools in Needles was an Ohio University graduate! So off they went. I asked Frank whether or not he and Violet had any children; and, although they had four children, only three survived. In a somber voice and quickly (as though a rote description to be endured), Frank told me the tragic story of their first child, Stephen, who, at the age of 4 was riding his trike when he was hit by a neighbor s car as she backed out of her driveway. -- The sorrow of this story took hold of me for a moment and I found myself unable to imagine the grief that must be endured when a parent loses a child. -- Stephen had incurred a basal skull fracture and was transported to a hospital in San Bernardino for treatment. Frank and Violet wanted to move closer to San Bernardino, and Frank got a teaching job in Simi Valley. Their second child, Allen was an infant when young Stephen died. Violet and Frank were so terribly affected by Stephen s death. Violet was absolutely broken hearted and Frank gave up teaching thinking the kids would be better off with another teacher. Frank then owned and operated a Mobil service station for about a year and a half, and eventually their two daughters, Janet and Evelyn, were born. The service station turned out to be too time consuming, especially when workers would call off and Frank had to cover their shifts. He sold the Mobil station, worked for North American for a couple of years and eventually settled at the Post Office in Torrance where he worked for 30 years. I remember Mary telling me that she and Frank had each been married twice prior to meeting, and I wondered about that. Frank told me he came to look at property in Yucaipa on the recommendation of a postal coworker and the Dussels ended up buying property here. Although Violet had selected the blue prints for their Yucaipa home (where Frank and Mary currently live), she suffered from a bad heart and went to be with the Lord before she had a chance to see the blueprints come to life. After Violet passed, Frank met his second wife through the Postal Workers Union in Torrance where he served as President and June Maderi was Secretary.

8 June and Frank were married and they moved to their newly-built home in Yucaipa in Tragedy struck Frank s life again when, after just four years of marriage, he and June were attending a Christmas Eve service at UMCoY when halfway through the service she had a brain aneurism that took her life. At this point I found myself admiring the way Frank was able relate such events to me and I wondered if he d always been a Christian, and I asked about his spiritual journey. He said he d always gone to church: he attended a non-denominational chapel at the orphanage, and in high school he lived across the street from the church driveway; he always considered himself a Methodist. Now, I knew he was going to meet Mary any minute and sure enough, and true to form, he had me in stitches yet again before too long. Just check this out: He was walking his dogs down Third Street in Calimesa one day when he caught site of a lady chasing a tortoise! (I can picture it!) Frank says that when he saw Mary chasing her tortoise, that was the end of me! He just lost his marbles and asked her out, and she said Yes. (Talk about an old reprobate!!!) Well, he also said that if Mary knew what she was getting into she would have said No. (Having gotten to know Frank a bit, I doubt seriously that she would have said No. ) I asked if there was a highlight in their life together and Frank lit up (just as Mary had when I spoke with her) when he described their trip to Hawaii five years ago. They especially liked the luau, and I asked Frank if got a lei. He smiled a HUGE smile and said, I got a kiss! Now, this ties right in with Frank s favorite hobby, which he admits is girls. Of course, right after this admission, he said, Oh, ~ 8 ~ wait a minute! Don t put that down!! To which I immediately replied that he could be sure I would include it. We had a good laugh! Kidding aside, Frank is a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Rotary Club and the Elks. He said that he and Mary mostly attend events at the American Legion and the Rotary Club and they both enjoy charitable works. He told me in a very nonchalant way that he and Mary provide an annual scholarship for nurses training. (Wow!!) By the time I was preparing to wrap up my computer and finish my glass of water, Mary had entered the dining room where we were talking. I noticed (and loved) that Frank sparks up as Mary nears and he just starts smiling. How sweet! Now, being the pill that I am (according to my husband, that is), I asked Mary what Frank does that bugs her. Without missing a beat she said, Nothing. He doesn t bug me. He does a little gardening, a little dumpster diving, and a little napping. Now, I don t know about you, but to me it sounds as though Mr. Frank has the art of retirement down to a science! Good for him!! I would like to take just a minute here to sincerely thank both Frank and Mary Ann for sharing their lives with us. I am constantly reminded of the complexity and diversity of our lives and I enjoyed and appreciate the time I spent getting to know the Dussels. Who shall we meet next? Please let me know if you have a suggestion. Sally Gibson, editor
